This fall, students in UNH’s occupational therapy (M.S.) program had the opportunity to work with Life Skills community group as part of the “Enabling Participation in Community Groups” course. Life Skills is a program that brings together OT students and a group of 10 adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities to create a community and to help members continue to build valuable social skills after they have completed their education. This semester, the group has been focused on creative expression. They participated in projects ranging from rock-painting and bracelet making to boost motor skills, to more practical activities like practicing budgeting and working together to cook meals. The OT students described the group as a “safe space” where members can build confidence without fear of judgment This group offers students a unique opportunity to work with a specific population that they are likely to encounter in their future careers. Students said they loved getting to be part of something so meaningful while learning relationship-building skills that will guide them in all fields of OT.
