For the past 12 years, occupational therapy graduate students have made an impact on the lives of stroke survivors through the Stroke Survivor Group, which is part of the “Enabling Participation in Community Groups” course. During this course, students work with stroke survivors on therapeutic exercises and activities tailored to support their specific needs. This fall, Ian Miller and Emelia Toursie led this group alongside lab instructor, Hana Chouinard. Miller and Toursie say that their experience leading this group has allowed them to learn how to effectively lead a group and adapt to different patients' recovery needs. They also add that hearing each patient’s story and getting to watch them grow each week was extremely rewarding. Chouinard, who is now working professionally as an impatient occupational therapist, returned to UNH to mentor students because of the impact the group had on her during her time in the program. Working with this group sparked her interest in neurological conditions and played a large role in leading her to where she is today.
