🌟 Course Spotlight: ANSC 511 Animal Anatomy and Physiology In this foundational course, students decode the body’s functions and learn critical skills needed for detailed studies in animal science. On this day in lab, students explored the comparative anatomy and physiology of the digestive system to deepen and apply their understanding of this complex topic. They examined various skulls to distinguish the dentition patterns of carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. Additionally, they explored a variation of the stomach found in ruminant animals like cattle and sheep, investigated gastrointestinal structures in birds and studied the liver’s microscopic anatomy with models, highlighting its role in digestion and nutrient absorption. Throughout the semester, lab sessions offer hands-on opportunities to practice the information learned in lectures. In other labs, students dissect organs such as the heart and kidney and examine organ systems in minks and fetal pigs. This course serves as a primer for students aiming for advanced degrees in veterinary or graduate schools, giving them a competitive edge. It is also invaluable for those entering the job market immediately after graduation. A recent graduate credited this course as a fundamental resource in starting their own equine massage business. Thanks for letting us take a peek into your lab!
