Welcome to the Dining Commons, where we come together, find community and enjoy delicious, healthy meals. With over ten culinary stations, we offer a variety of global and local cuisines, including plant-based options and dishes for various dietary needs. Covering more than 28,000 square feet, the space includes a patio and a mezzanine, perfect for eating with friends. Want to study while you eat? The space is equipped with plenty of electrical outlets and strong Wi-Fi. Designed as a LEED Gold building, we prioritize sustainability, focusing on energy conservation, water reduction and clean indoor air. Our food choices reflect our values, with 40% of ingredients locally sourced in British Columbia.
The SUB is a hub for connecting with other students and accessing services. It features a community kitchen, a nap room, a prayer space, a large ballroom and several meeting rooms. Each floor has lounge seating, study tables and desks. The SUB hosts groups like Out on Campus, the SFU Women's Centre and the SFU First Nations, MĂ©tis & inuit Student Association. SFU hosts over 230 clubs and groups, making it easy to meet students with similar interests. You can also start your own club through the Simon Fraser Student Society, located in the Student Union Building. Whether you're connecting with classmates or studying, the SUB is where everything happens.
The Maggie Benston Centre provides key services to support your academic and personal development at SFU. Visit the Registrar Information Services desk to set up your student ID and manage tuition payments. The building's atrium hosts several resources, including SFU's Health & Counselling, offering in-person and virtual appointments for medical and mental health support. The Centre for Accessible Learning assists students with disabilities and on-going medical conditions, providing accommodations and support for academic success. Financial Aid and Awards helps explore funding options, while SFU Study Abroad offers opportunities to earn credits abroad. Career Services provides career advising and employer connections. Graduate Studies supports postgraduate students with admissions and scholarships.
International Services for Students supports Simon Fraser University's international student community with advising, programs and resources. Here, you'll find International Student Advising, which offers help with immigration and transition such as study permits, visas, provincial attestation letters, work eligibility, enrolment requirements, the Canadian healthcare system and tax information. International Student Experience Support is your intercultural transition support throughout your entire time at SFU. Whether you're just starting or already immersed in the university community, you can get help adjusting to your student life in Canada and any questions about student life outside the classroom.
SFU has three libraries, with the largest being the W.A.C. Bennett Library on our Burnaby campus. This seven-floor library houses nearly three million volumes. You can borrow books, videos, video projectors, electronic chargers and adapters and more. The Student Learning Commons offers support for academic writing and study strategies, along with workshops and English conversation groups. The Library Media and Maker Commons is a hands-on space with tools like 3D printers, 3D scanners, an embroidery machine and editing studios. Training resources are available to help you use these tools for research, coursework or even personal projects. SFU Library is equipped to support your studies while inspiring creative growth.
SFU's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, or FASS, is the most diverse faculty at SFU, with over 25 undergraduate departments and more than 1,200 courses. FASS students have access to Arts Central, a space for working, studying and connecting with peers. At Arts Central, FASS academic advisors help guide students through important academic and career decisions, providing tools to navigate the university's departments and programs effectively. The staff at Arts Central also offer support and opportunities for students to engage fully in the SFU experience. The expert guidance at Arts Central helps students explore the many fascinating learning opportunities in FASS while finding a sense of belonging.
Sci-Space is our one-stop shop for all things Faculty of Science at SFU. As one of Canada's top research universities, our science professors work on solutions to today's challenges, so you can learn directly about the latest discoveries from the actual researchers making them. While scientific breakthroughs occur in labs and in the field, Sci-Space is where science students socialize, study and unwind. It offers exciting events, science and math academic support, peer mentorship and general advising. Sci-Space is ideally located near a variety of SFU faculties and programs, including Education and Environment, which helps to foster interdisciplinary connection and to inspire scientific opportunity.
The Saywell Hall Atrium could become your favorite spot on the Burnaby campus—a place to grab coffee, relax and connect with friends beside James Hart's Frog Constellation sculpture, which depicts a traditional Haida love story. The nearby Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology showcases artifacts from around the world, focusing on British Columbia. SFU's Archaeology department is highly ranked and part of the Faculty of Environment, known for its hands-on approach to solving global issues and developing dynamic careers. This area is also close to the Faculty of Education, where students discover new ways of thinking and teaching, as well the Multifaith Centre, which supports spiritual well-being through activities and dialogues.
The Indigenous Student Centre at SFU provides support and community for Indigenous students navigating university life. Guided by the pillars of Respect, Reciprocity, Trust and Humility, the centre provides a comprehensive support system tailored to Indigenous students' needs. It offers two spaces on the Burnaby campus for studying, accessing support as well as connecting with peers, staff, counsellors, Elders and the community. The centre also hosts events like the Welcome Feast, Honouring Feast, and monthly lunches, nurturing a deep sense of belonging among Indigenous students, faculty and staff. Through informal chats, shared meals and skill-building activities, the Indigenous Student Centre is dedicated to supporting its students and community at SFU.
The Djavad Mowafaghian Courtyard is a hidden gem on campus, offering a garden oasis perfect for relaxation and reflection—a peaceful complement to the impactful learning inside the (Marilyn and Stewart) Blusson Hall. This building houses the Faculty of Health Sciences, where students tackle real-life challenges using skills like health promotion, lab work, policy writing and data analysis. Learn directly from experts in Indigenous health, HIV and Covid research, social justice, mental health, addictions and harm reduction. The faculty offers diverse learning opportunities, including field courses, co-op placements and collaborative projects. Also overlooking this courtyard is our renowned School of Criminology, one of the top criminal justice teaching and research centres in the world.
Studying at SFU on Burnaby Mountain feels like being on top of the world. Between the Academic Quadrangle (AQ) and Convocation Mall, you can enjoy stunning views of the campus and surrounding areas. Facing the inner courtyard, you'll find the SFU Reflecting Pond, home to friendly koi fish, and a statue of Canadian hero Terry Fox, an SFU student known for his Marathon of Hope. This courtyard is a popular spot for students to gather for meals or meetings. From here, you can see nearby mountain trails, the North Shore Mountains and Burrard Inlet. The views, including Vancouver Island and Washington State's Mount Baker, are breathtaking and inspiring.
SFU's Applied Sciences Building houses advanced labs and the Schools of Computing Science and Engineering Science. SFU's computing science program is one of the largest in western Canada, ranking among the top 100 globally and top five in Canada. We are proud to teach engineering in a unique way, using cutting-edge technologies to prepare students for a high-tech future. Labs in this building host research in quantum computing, A.I., computer vision and robotics, with opportunities for student involvement. Beyond academics, students can engage in extracurricular activities like the TechConnect program for first-year students. SFU also collaborates with other faculties, global universities and industry partners to enhance learning experiences.
SFU's West Mall Centre is a bustling complex that hosts diverse academic units, including Business, French, Mathematics, Economics, and Philosophy, along with multiple coffee shops and study areas. The Beedie School of Business, located here, focuses on industry partnerships and social innovation. Beedie's programs prepare students for careers, entrepreneurship, and real-world problem-solving, enhanced by its Career Management Centre and opportunities to participate in global case competitions. When it comes to French, SFU is unique in British Columbia, offering extensive opportunities to learn in French across all majors. The campus has a lively Francophone community, supported by the Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs through cultural events, language clubs, and scholarships.
Terry Fox Field is the home turf for SFU's varsity soccer and track and field teams. These teams, along with SFU's basketball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, swimming, cross-country and golf teams proudly represent as the only Canadian teams in the NCAA. SFU Stadium offers a great view for fans cheering on the athletes. Behind it, the Lorne Davies Complex is perfect for staying active. It includes a fitness center, swimming pool, yoga and barre studios, squash and racquetball courts, as well as intramural leagues and programs. The complex also houses the basketball and volleyball teams in the West Gym.
Nestled next to the trees, trails, and streams of Burnaby Mountain, UniverCity is a vibrant community with over 5,000 residents. It offers a convenient high street with coffee shops, a bank, restaurants, a grocery store, a dental office, a postal outlet, a pharmacy and a health care clinic. Food options, including food trucks, make it an ideal spot to meet friends for lunch. UniverCity will be the future home to the upper terminal of the planned Burnaby Mountain Gondola, providing a direct link from the Skytrain to SFU. This addition will make commuting easier and more enjoyable, connecting you seamlessly with campus life and the natural beauty of Burnaby Mountain.
SFU's ceremonial walkway is both meaningful and inspiring. Connecting UniverCity village and the SFU Exchange Bus Loop to the Academic Quadrangle, it is a place of cultural significance. The Burnaby Campus sits on the traditional unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Kwikwetlem nations. SFU is dedicated to Truth and Reconciliation, and projects like the First Peoples' Gathering House will provide a shared space to celebrate Indigenous cultures. This walkway will also provide access to The Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum, featuring SFU Galleries' impressive art collection. Nearby, the Trottier Observatory offers Starry Nights, free stargazing events that add to the magical experience of this campus path.
Fraser International College (FIC) is our partner school here on SFU's Burnaby campus. FIC helps students from around the world reach their potential by providing high-quality education. It offers programs designed to give a direct pathway into SFU's second year, ensuring students are prepared for higher education in Canada. With quality instruction, small class sizes, diverse courses and volunteer opportunities, FIC supports students' academic and personal growth. Students at FIC have access to SFU's libraries, computer labs, recreation facilities and on-campus accommodation. FIC focuses on helping students harness their talents and achieve their dreams, guiding them toward success at SFU.
