Welcome to Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. You'll find our Harborside Campus right by the ocean, overlooking the Narragansett Bay. This picturesque campus is home to our College of Food Innovation & Technology, our athletic facilities, and several residence halls. Between Harborside and our Downcity Campus, JWU Providence has something for everyone with six colleges and more than 55 undergraduate programs to prepare students for almost any industry. This tour focuses on our most unique and innovative spaces where our students learn, create and thrive with the hands-on, experiential education we're known for. Let's get started!

Life on Campus: Wildcat Center

The Wildcat Center is home to our NCAA varsity athletics teams, intramurals, workout facilities, the Harborside Bookstore and the Student Involvement and Leadership office, which supports over 100 student clubs and organizations. It's the hub of Harborside, where you can catch a basketball or volleyball game, participate in community service and fundraising events, get in a good workout and more. Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence

The Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence offers stunning beauty and unbeatable function with 82,000 square feet and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. The building features 30 dynamic teaching labs and classrooms, all outfitted with the latest appliances and equipment from industry-leading brands. Three dining rooms, nine hot kitchens, 2 cold kitchens (known as garde manger in the industry), two bake shops, an artisan bread lab, seven pastry and chocolate labs, two meat-cutting labs, a wine lab, a microbrewery lab, and a mixology lab — it's all here in one incredible building, and you'll see some of them in the next few stops.

Culinary Labs

Nothing beats the exciting, fast-paced activity you’ll find in our culinary labs. What may seem like a flurry of crisp white jackets darting around the kitchen is really the complex choreography of a well-oiled machine. Students are honing their classic and advanced culinary skills, learning about international cuisines, working with the state-of-the-art equipment, and holding themselves to a high standard of professionalism — all of which prepares them to succeed in whatever professional environment they step into. Experienced chef instructors work side-by-side with these students and reinforce the importance of teamwork and dedication in the kitchen.

Baking and Pastry Labs

If you’re smelling the incredible scent of freshly baked bread or the sweet, floral aroma of chocolate, you are likely close by one of our baking and pastry labs. Some labs are dedicated to artisan bread-making, others to pastry or chocolate – but all of them are outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and everything students need to master the art and science behind baking all kinds of delicious products. Then, they get to unleash their creativity to design beautiful wedding cakes, stunning confectionary showpieces, and other world class desserts.

Wine and Mixology Labs

There are several beverage labs here at Harborside, each used for specific courses and topics. Here, you can see the wine and spirits tasting lab, where students learn about a variety of wines and spirits and how to pair them with food. We also have a Mixology Lab, which features twenty individual bar stations for students to learn about modern bar service, study recipes and practice making drinks. Another space is the Coors Beverage Lab, which is dedicated to the fundamentals of beer brewing and sensory analysis. All three of these labs can be found in the Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence.

Dining Room

Multiple dining rooms can be found at Harborside, and they are used as hands-on classrooms for food and beverage programs, venues for small events and more. Here, you can see one of three dining rooms located in the Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence. Besides offering a stunning view of the bay, these dining rooms are educational labs that are often opened as functioning restaurants to serve JWU students, faculty and staff. Students develop the menus, manage the front and back of the house, recommend wine pairings and serve the guests — and it's all part of their coursework.

Harbor View

Just a short distance up the road from *Harborside*, Harbor View is a residence hall with a lot to offer. As the name suggests, it features breath-taking views of the bay for a tranquil atmosphere, and its proximity to *Harborside* makes it a favorite for culinary students. Approximately 300 new and upper-class students call this community their home every year. Single, double, and triple occupancy rooms are available, and every room has a private bathroom. This residence hall also offers air conditioning, on-site laundry and pet-friendly rooms on the ground floor.

Harborside Village

One of four residence hall options located on this campus, Harborside Village offers apartment-style living for upperclassmen. The Village is made up of 12 individual buildings, each with three floors of apartments. Each apartment has a kitchen, a common living space, four single bedrooms and two private bathrooms for four students to share. Airconditioning, plenty of parking, on-site laundry and proximity to the ocean make the Village a great living option for students.

Athletic Fields

Wildcat athletes shine under the bright lights of the Scott's Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex. The complex is home to our Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Lacrosse and Field Hockey teams, as well as intramural and recreational sports. It features a baseball field, a softball field, a synthetic turf field, practice space, a field house and team training facilities. Even if sports aren't your vibe, you can still enjoy the beautiful view of the Narragansett Bay and take a stroll along the walking path that surrounds the entire complex. Along the waterfront, you'll also find The Bay Center and over six acres of land that we have donated to Save the Bay.

Friedman Center

Student success starts at the Friedman Center, where a lot of important spaces and offices reside. You'll find the Experiential Education & Career Services office, the Entrepreneurship Center, the Food Innovation Design Lab, The Culinary Museum, Student Academic and Financial Services, International Student Services, the Residential Life office, Liberty Market and Harborside's Library. You'll see some of these spaces in the next few stops.

Library

Besides being a great place to study, the JWU Library offers so many resources. Students have access to a wide range of scholarly, literary and trade publications, including books, e-Books, articles, images, videos, and websites — plus the support of librarians and information specialists on campus or online. The Academic Success Center, conveniently located right next to the Library, provides writing and editing support, tutoring, and workshops on topics like notetaking and study skills. Student Academic Services is also nearby so students can meet with their academic advisors to discuss their progress.

Culinary Museum

The Culinary Museum is considered an extension of the JWU Library and is home to thousands of historic artifacts associated with the fields of culinary arts, food studies and hospitality. The numerous seating areas and peaceful quiet make the Culinary Museum a favorite study spot for students. Plus, the museum's online catalog and in-person presentation space are also available to students, faculty, staff, alumni and external researchers.

Food Innovation Design Lab

The Food Innovation and Design Lab is a dynamic learning space completely dedicated to developing and improving food products and their design. Students in our Culinary Science & Product Development program often use this space to develop their own market-ready food products from scratch. This lab also houses the Ecolab Center for Culinary Science, which provides product development, sensory and regulatory services for food and beverage entrepreneurs across the country. Students from a variety of programs get to participate in all of this work to gain valuable experience.

Harborside Academic Center

Classrooms, kitchen labs, computer labs, the Culinary Amphitheater, the Harborside Café and a Starbucks live in the Harborside Academic Center, and many students would agree that the best feature in this building is, in fact, the Starbucks. A lot of exciting learning happens in this building between the culinary academic and lab courses and graduate level classes that also use these classrooms – but we agree, it is important to know that you're never far from a pumpkin spiced latte.

A wide variety of food options await you at Harborside Café, an all-you-care-to-eat dining center conveniently located in the Harborside Academic Center right by Starbucks. Fuel up on eggs, omelets, cereal, waffles and other classic breakfast options. Enjoy a slice of pizza, a salad, a burger, a sandwich and more for lunch. Then finish each day with something new from a rotating dinner special menu that includes options like signature pasta dishes, tacos, roasted pork tenderloin, jerk chicken, Thai shrimp and so much more. Fill your plate and enjoy!

You'll see our Wildcat Wheels busses all over the city of Providence, transporting students from *Harborside* to both Harbor View and *Downcity* Campus, which is just a few minutes away. And for commuters and students who have cars on campus, *JWU* has plenty of parking available at Harborside so you won't have to fight for street parking or use public lots.
