Experience the rich culture of Appalachian song traditions through the history of its social movements. Award-winning ballad singer Saro Lynch-Thomason, balad singer and activist from Asheville, NC, will use labor anthems, folk song, Appalachian balladry and African-American traditionals to help tell the unique and often-ignored history of Appalachia as a nexus of social change. Using historic photography as a backdrop, Saro will use solo performance and group song to review dramatic moments in Appalachia\'s evolution- from labor struggles to civil rights organizing, healthcare battles and the anti-mountaintop removal movement. All are encouraged (but not required) to sing.
