Here in the main lobby of the building, the six pillars pay homage to UMaine’s first graduating class of six students and symbolize the support given by the UMaine’s alumni. On the floor a mosaic of 20,000 tiles forms Maine’s official seal and represents public support for the State of Maine’s flagship campus. Above the seal is a dome that is painted with a trompe l’oeil (French for, “deceive the eye”) sky, alight with a fiber optic constellation of Ursa Major — the “Great Bear.”
