To know what is means to be a Roo, you have to understand the university's bond with the Kansas City community. There's no better place to start than with Scofield Hall, which hosted the first classes at UMKC. In the midst of the Great Depression, Kansas City leaders united behind a vision of a public university that would equip future generations to make a lasting difference in the Kansas City region and beyond. Local businessman and philanthropist William Volker gifted 40 acres, including a mansion — now known as Scofield Hall — that would become the University of Kansas City (now UMKC) campus. The first day of classes was Oct. 1, 1933. Before we get started, let me explain the many ways you can explore our beautiful space. You can click on the forward facing arrow to start walking around. You can jump to the next stop by clicking on the "Next" button. Now, if you already know where you want to go, you can select any location by using the list or by clicking directly on the map. Lastly, remember that you can explore any particular location in more detail by clicking the supplemental icons you'll see popping up on your screen throughout the tour.
