Welcome to a virtual tour of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College! We have locations in Boone, Lincoln, Logan, Mingo, McDowell, and Wyoming counties in West Virginia, and offer in-state tuition fees to students in four counties in eastern Kentucky. Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College prides itself on providing a stellar education to students for nearly a half-century. With six locations spread throughout the southern part of West Virginia, Southern truly offers something for everyone. From our nationally-accredited career and technical programs – including our popular Nursing and Allied Health career paths – to our general education courses, Southern is preparing our students to become leaders in their field. Through these partnerships, Southern is helping provide students opportunities to earn an Associate Degree with us, and then transfer to a partnering institution to earn their four-year degree in a seamless process. Allied Health and Nursing

Southern offers nationally-accredited programs in healthcare for students interested in making a difference! Our Nursing Program is among the most popular and competitive in the region. In addition, we offer future students the choice between six impressive Allied Health programs. Southern offers Medical Assisting, Medical Laboratory Technology, Paramedic Science, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Care Technology, and Surgical Technology. Students in these programs are learning from industry leaders in the most technologically-advanced environment available! In spring 2019, Southern debuted its SynDaver, or synthetic cadaver, the most elaborate surgical simulator in the world. Southern is the only institution in West Virginia to have anything like it, and it is used by our Surgical Technology team to simulate surgical procedures. Also, our Radiology Technology students are training on one of the state's only Digital Radiography machines. This machine captures data digitally during the procedure. By equipping our labs with state-of-the-art equipment, we help ensure our graduates are ready for real-world situations and will afford a seamless transition to their careers.

Transfer and General Education

Students at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College have an opportunity to begin their academic career at Southern and then seamlessly transfer to the higher-education institution of their choice to further their education. Southern’s transfer students can enroll in our general education courses or choose from one of Southern’s 2+2 Agreements with our academic partners, giving students the chance to earn their Associate Degree at Southern, and transfer to earn their Bachelor Degree. More information about our transfer agreements can be found on our website. For students interested in starting at Southern, our general education courses can be transferred to almost any four-year institution of the student’s choice. Students save money by starting their journey at Southern, with some of the lowest tuition rates in the state of West Virginia. Southern has recently reached out to local high schools to offer juniors and seniors a chance to start earning their degree while still in high school with our Early College Academy. Enrollment has doubled over the last year, and the program is helping instill the importance of a college degree early in a student's academic career. You can get ahead of your peers by earning college credits while still in high school!

Career and Technical

Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College offers students many career and technical programs with the opportunity to earn a degree, certificate, and skill-set. Southern students enrolled in one of our career and technical programs will be learning on state-of-the-art equipment that simulates real-world experience. This helps ensure our graduates are ready for real-world situations and will afford them a seamless transition into the workforce. Our Drone Technology courses are among our most popular and innovative. Southern's drone courses were recently selected by the Federal Aviation Administration for the Unmanned Aircraft Systems-Collegiate Training Initiative program. These students have the chance to learn from our drone instructor, who is the only FAA-certified pilot in the area. These classes are part of our Information Technology program and offer everything from beginner to advanced drone piloting. Students enrolled in these courses will learn to fly, plan missions, gather data, inspect infrastructure, and even build a drone. Students who are interested in our career and technical courses can choose from a wide-ranging selection of programs, including Electrical Engineering Technology and Welding. As a graduate of Southern’s Welding program, your career options include manufacturing, commercial construction, mining, agriculture, wholesale trade and repair and maintenance. Southern also prides itself on our strong partnerships with other higher-learning institutions. We currently work in conjunction with the Robert C. Byrd Institute to offer a Machining Technology program at our Williamson campus, as well as the McDowell County Career and Technical Center in Welch.

Student Life at Southern

Southern offers our students a unique on-campus experience, in addition to our academic offerings. Our community is close-knit, and students will be on a first-name basis with their instructors. We have an active Student Government Association, and we are proud to sponsor a chapter of the National Society for Leadership and Success, the nation’s largest leadership honor society and collegiate leadership development program. Our SGA provides students with the opportunity to represent their peers at Southern, guide college policies, as well as offer activities that drive student engagement and interest. The SGA is composed of elected representatives, as well as volunteers, who work with Student Services Specialists/SGA Advisors on each campus to determine events that encourage student participation at the college. These events may include dances, guest speakers, Red Cross blood drives, game shows, and more! Southern also opens its doors to community partners, like the Southern Coalition for the Arts. The ARTS, as it’s known, is dedicated to fostering the talent of Southern West Virginians through artistic exposure and creative expression.
