Welcome to Salem State University! Home of the Vikings. We're currently at the Sullivan building, home of the original Salem State in 1854, is our most historic building on campus. The Sullivan Building houses the McKeown School of Education, which encompasses all the university's education programs, and other academic programs including, history, math, philosophy, and world languages and cultures. Sullivan also houses our 90-seat black box-style Callan Studio Theatre, the Center for International Education, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the School of Graduate Studies, which offers more than 30 master's degree programs, graduate certificates, and professional licensure programs.

Your first year is an opportunity to explore, learn and grow. The first year experience office is here to ensure that you have access to the resources and support you need to successfully navigate the transition from high school to university life. Your first-year experience will lay the foundation for your success in academic, intellectual, social, and civic endeavors at Salem State.
One of the primary ways we support your transition to college life is by providing you with a personal student success coach who will serve as your guide to all things "Salem State" during your first year.
Berry Library and Learning Commons

The Berry library is an environmentally friendly LEED-certified building with soaring windows, a beautiful atrium, and lots of room to spread out in this airy and inviting space. There are more than 1,000 study seats, 150 computer stations, 12 reservable group study rooms, access to over 300 databases and an extensive book collection. Within the library is our learning commons, which brings together the Center for Academic Excellence, academic advising, disabilities services, Writing Center, and the Commonwealth Honors Program. The library and learning commons overlook the campus quad, where students regularly gather to socialize or just enjoy the fresh air.
Meier Hall

Meier Hall is home to the art + design, biology, chemistry and physics, computer science, economics, English, geography and sustainability, geological sciences, interdisciplinary studies, politics, policy and international relations, psychology, and sociology programs. On the fifth floor you'll find our greenhouse, run by the biology program and staffed by students. The roof is home to the Collins Observatory. The North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club hosts free observing hours, on Monday nights, September through April. The Center for Civic Engagement and Frederick E. Berry Institute of Politics, Salem State's nexus for community-based initiatives, are also within Meier. On the ground floor sits one of our most popular spots between classes, Dunkin'.
North Campus Dining Commons

The North Campus Dining Commons serves breakfast, lunch and dinner Mondays through Thursdays, and breakfast and lunch on Fridays. For other meals, students visit the Marsh Dining Commons located on Harrington Campus.
This is one of the locations where students can use their meal plan. There are five meal plan options available, each differing on the student's needs as a resident, commuter, first-year, or upperclassman. The first floor offers buffet style service. The second floor has a food court with nationally recognized options. Also, on the second floor you'll find the First Year Experience office, the "hub" of everything first-year students need to know to navigate the transition to university life.
Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts

The Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts is home to Salem State's nationally award-winning theatre program and other artistic endeavors. The 470-seat theatre features raised seating, an orchestra pit, a full-sized rehearsal stage, and a glass-walled lobby that also serves as an informal social and gathering space.
Salem State's theatre program is certified from the National Association of Schools of Theatre and holds four major performances in the academic year, often including a musical—most are free to students. Dance students are able to perform, choreograph and attend master classes and performances presented by visiting artists in this inspiring space.
North Campus Quad

The North Campus Quad is one of the most vibrant and active spaces on Salem State's campus and is the heart of North Campus. The quad hosts many university events throughout the school year, including the student involvement and activities fair, Viking Warrior Day, and voter registration events — to name a few. Grab a blanket and make your own study or hangout space with friends or enjoy the view from inside the library, which overlooks the quad.
Ellison Campus Center

With dozens of groups and clubs on campus, you'll find other students with interests like yours. The Ellison Campus Center is where groups and clubs get the resources they need to launch and grow. In addition to groups and clubs, you'll find the Student Government Association, veterans affairs, our radio station WMWM, the Winfisky Gallery, the commuter lounge, and career services. Through career services, you can get resume critiques, practice interviews, and get internship and job information, all of which are free to you as a student.
The campus center is also home to counseling and health services, which provides a wide variety of medical and mental health care offerings to students.

Esports

Our new state-of-the-art Esports lounge in the Ellison Campus Center has been a welcomed and vibrant addition to campus. The Esports Lounge in the Ellison Campus Center. Complete with 12 high-end gaming PCs, a Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Virtual Reality (VR) equipment, you won't want to leave this lounge. Our Esports program aims to create a fun, competitive gaming experience while promoting inclusion and community for all participants.
Bowditch Hall

Bowditch Hall is one of two residence halls, Peabody Hall the other, located on North Campus. The halls are identical on the inside, with Bowditch having six floors, and Peabody, seven. The rooms are either doubles, for two people; triples, for three; or quads, for four. The floors can be single-gendered or co-ed, and each contains its own lounge. Resident assistants are on each floor to help you through your first year of college and create great events, like movie nights or ice cream socials to help everyone meet. Each hall has a coin-operated laundry and a ground floor lounge, with a large TV and pool tables.
Classroom Building

The Classroom Building is home to our AACSB-accredited Bertolon School of Business which includes the accounting and finance, management, and marketing and decision sciences programs. It also houses the media and communication and music and dance programs, and our Recital Hall. The Recital Hall hosts creative events and performances throughout the year including music recitals and author talks.
The Classroom Building also has an open computer lab. The open-access computer lab provides students with convenient access to reliable computing resources. In 2019, the Classroom Building welcomed the addition of the Cabot Wealth Management lab, which is equipped with 12 Bloomberg Terminals.
Student Navigation Center

On the second floor of the Classroom Building is the Student Navigation Center. It is a student-centered office designed to be a one-stop solution center to help improve the business of being a student. It includes the student accounts, ClipperCard, financial aid, registrar, and transfer services offices.
At Salem State, we focus our financial aid resources on students who have financial need as defined by the federal government's FAFSA calculations.
Your ClipperCard serves as your university identification card. This is what you will use for your meal plan, dining dollars and ClipperCash. It also serves as an access card to labs, classrooms, offices, residence halls and the commuter parking garage.
Forten Hall

Forten Hall, our newest residence hall, opened in August 2015. It will be one of your options for your sophomore, and possibly junior, years. Small study lounges are located throughout the hall, as well as more general lounges for students with televisions. The ground floor cafe, complete with Starbucks, is sure to be a popular gathering place. In addition to the resident assistants in Forten Hall, there are academic mentors. Academic mentors, or AM's, are current upperclassmen who guide and support freshman and sophomore residents, especially during their time transitioning to living at college. They also meet with students to discuss homework and general study tips.
Marsh Hall

Marsh Hall houses students in double and triple rooms set up in "pods." Each pod consists of 14-16 rooms, plus a lounge area and several bathrooms. There are five floors, each with a kitchenette area, and small lounges throughout the building. On the ground floor is a large community space, including a fitness room, mailboxes, vending machines, a laundry area, pool tables, air hockey, and a television and lounge area. There is also a meeting room, kitchen, and staff offices.
On the ground floor, Marsh Hall also houses a dining hall with buffet-style and made-to-order offerings and a convenience store, each with a separate entrance from the residence hall.
Atlantic Hall

Atlantic Hall, also located on Central Campus, houses 452 students in 77 six-person furnished apartments. Each fully air-conditioned apartment includes two double rooms, two single rooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room area. Each kitchen includes a full-size stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. Small lounges are throughout the building with a large community space on the ground floor, which includes a fitness room, laundry area, pool tables, and television and lounge area. Also on the ground floor is a seminar room where classes, movie nights and group meetings are held. This residence hall is also home to our gender inclusive housing and transfer community.
Gasset Fitness Center and O'Keefe Complex

The Gassett Fitness Center and O'Keefe Complex is home to the sport and movement science program and our Viking athletic teams. Salem State is a NCAA Division III member and has won the Howard C. Smith Cup a record number of times. The Harold E. and Marilyn J. Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center is open to all students and has cardio and strength equipment, locker rooms, lounges, and recreational courts. Connected is the Richard B. O'Keefe Complex with an indoor hitting cage, golf training room, multi-purpose gym, tennis courts, and swimming pool. Also in O'Keefe is the Rockett Ice Arena, where you'll cross the stage to receive your diploma!
School of Social Work and International Programs

287 Lafayette Street is home to the School of Social Work, as well as the ESL and international programs. The recently renovated building has state-of-the-art classrooms, student study areas and attractive common spaces. Undergraduate and graduate social work students can meet with faculty, attend clinical courses, research labs, and meet with field placement staff all in one location. Just down the street from North Campus, the building is convenient to both the Berry Library and Gassett Fitness Center and is less than a mile from downtown Salem.
Harrington Building

The Harrington Building is the only academic building on our South Campus and is home to the departments of criminal justice, healthcare studies, nursing, and occupational therapy. In addition to classrooms, the Harrington Building has a nursing simulation lab and the OT lab. The "sim lab," as it is more commonly known, gives nursing students hands-on patient experience with simulated patients in actual hospital beds presenting symptoms and conditions that are computer controlled by the instructor. The OT lab has state-of-the art equipment for students to gain hands-on experience.
Downtown Salem

Salem is not only 15 miles from Boston, but is an ocean-front city allowing for beautiful scenery and great outdoor areas to do schoolwork or meet with friends off campus. At the Salem Wharf you will find many shops, restaurants and The Friendship, a reconstruction of a ship that came to Salem in 1797. This represents just one of the numerous ways in which Salem played a part in the early years of America. Throughout the city, you will see a beautiful blend of history and modern-day.
