Admissions and Financial Aid

As you consider Pitt, the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid will be your first stop to begin the application process. Alumni Hall is home to the Admissions Welcome Center and our student tour guides, the Pitt Pathfinders.

Cathedral of Learning

The Cathedral of Learning, or affectionately Cathy, is home to 30 nationality rooms representing cultures from around the world, the Chancellor's Office, Pitt Honors, and many classrooms. At 42 stories high, it is one of the tallest educational buildings in the world. If you get lost in Pittsburgh, look for the Cathedral of Learning to guide you back to campus.

Student Activities

The hub for student life outside of the classroom, the William Pitt Union is home to more than 400 student organizations, an art gallery, dance studio, and dining. Nordy's, in the ground floor, has a wide variety of table games, several TVs, and the Commuter Lounge. It's a great place to hang out with your friends and get away for a little bit. Rub the panther's nose outside the student union every Friday before the Pitt Panther's football game to bring our team good luck.

First-Year Residence Life

Surrounded by five residence halls, Schenley Quad is a central location for a large majority of students. Its proximity to many classrooms, the bookstore, and a dining hall make it the perfect place to stop and relax between classes.

The Eatery at the Towers is an all-you-care-to-eat dining location. Finding your favorite foods is easy, whether it's a customized salad, pasta, global cuisine, made-to-order burgers or home-style favorites, there is something to satisfy every preference! Plant-based and allergen-friendly choices are also available at each meal!

Recreational Facilities

The Baierl (for actor pronounce: barrel) Student Recreation Center is one of many exercise options available to students. Facilities across campus provide opportunities for swimming, rock climbing, basketball, squash, and more. Also, slated to open in fall 2024, a centrally located multi-story 270,000-square-foot Campus Recreation and Wellness Center will encompass all aspects of health and wellness from recreation and fitness areas to yoga and meditation spaces.

Athletics

The Petersen Events Center houses a multi-purpose arena that serves as home court for the men's and women's Panther basketball teams and also hosts concerts and the Commencement Convocation. In a Sports Illustrated survey, the Petersen Events Center was named "Toughest Place to Play", with players citing Pitt's creatively distracting and deafeningly loud student section, the Oakland Zoo.

Heinz Chapel

Heinz Memorial Chapel is a non-denominational site which is open to the Pitt community and the public. It is a popular site for religious and memorial services, concerts, guided tours, and weddings. Lantern Night, an annual tradition where Pitt alumni welcome the freshman class, is also held here. Legend has it that if a couple kisses on the steps of Heinz Memorial Chapel, they are destined to wed there.

Hillman Library

Hillman Library contains approximately 1.5 million volumes, more than 200 computers, study capacity for 1500 users, and OpenLab, where you can drop in to experience virtual reality, learn to 3D print, use a vinyl cutter, or borrow a 360 degree video camera. With a cafe on the ground floor Hillman is the perfect place to study or do research for a paper. And for fans of horror movies visit the George A. Romero Collection on the third floor.

Arts and Sciences

The Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences is Pitt's largest school and has classes across campus. Some are held in Posvar Hall which hosts our social sciences departments—Africana Studies, Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, and Sociology. Posvar sits on the site of Forbes Field, former home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Home plate remains so you can imagine hitting the homerun to end the 1960 World Series.

Business Administration

Pitt Business students take courses in the state-of-the-art Financial Analysis Laboratory and newly renovated classrooms in Mervis Hall, and also to take advantage of its open study space and the Bottom Line Bistro located in the basement.

Engineering

The Swanson School of Engineering is located in Benedum Hall. The building includes offices, labs, classrooms, and the George M. Bevier Engineering Library. Benedum recently earned a LEED gold certification after extensive renovations. During renovations, The Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation moved in; a Center that focuses on the design of sustainable neighborhoods.

Nursing

Home to Pitt's highly ranked School of Nursing, Victoria Hall is conveniently close to the University's five other health sciences schools and various University of Pittsburgh Medical Center facilities. Pitt's nursing school offers opportunities to study with nationally recognized faculty.

Computing and Information

The School of Computing and Information offers Bachelor's degrees in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, and Information Science. Students in this school graduate prepared for careers that touch on health, education, urbanization, technology, climate and globalization.

Public Health

The Public Health Building houses state-of-the-art laboratories, academic areas, and communal spaces. First-year and graduate students learn side-by-side with brilliant faculty members committed to teaching and mentoring students.

David C. Frederick Honors College

The David C. Frederick Honors College is for students devoted to intellectual curiosity, academic attainment, and social consciousness. Located on the 35th and 36th floor of the Cathedral of Learning, the Frederick Honors College offers special courses, advising, housing and support, and the opportunity to earn a prestigious research-based degree, the Bachelor of Philosophy. Due to a generous gift to both Pitt and the University of Oxford from Sophie and David C. Frederick the Honors College will have the ability to build partnerships with Oxford to create a new set of educational opportunities for students.

Oakland

Oakland, one of 90 distinct neighborhoods in the city of Pittsburgh, is no ordinary college town. The proximity to UPMC, Carnegie Museums, Schenley Park, and downtown Pittsburgh make Pitt a great place to learn and play. Learning Opportunities in the City

Pittsburgh offers many opportunities for learning outside of the classroom from internships with Fortune 500 companies to discount tickets to musicals in Pittsburgh's Theater District. As a Pitt student you can also use your ID for free admission to the Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, Carnegie Science Center, Mattress Factory, and Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.

Downtown Pittsburgh is just three miles from campus. As a Pitt student you can use your ID to take a city bus anywhere within the city limits. Head to the Strip District for a taste of the many cultures that make Pittsburgh unique, to the North Side to catch a Pirates game, or to the South Side and ride the incline.
