Student Union (SU)

There’s always something happening in the Student Union! Grab a bite in the cafeteria, get some work done in the Reading Lounge, or check out some of our larger events in Alumni Hall or the Golden Eagles Room. The Student Union is connected to E Building, where you’ll find Student Health Services, the student Food Pantry—where you can grab essentials, the Power Closet—to find just the right look for a job interview, and offices for The Independent—our student newspaper, Que Ondee Sola—the oldest Puerto Rican and Latinx university student publication in the country, and WZRD—”the Wizard,” Chicago’s only freeform radio station.

Recital Hall

Recital Hall is not only a great place to hear student and faculty performances, but also where concerts are held by musicians and artists across the globe through the Jewel Box Series. Recital Hall is an intimate venue seating 175 and is a state-of-the-art acoustic facility. It’s not just used for performances. Come to Recital Hall for other events like presentations, guest lectures, student organization meetings and more!

Auditorium

Our 425-seat Auditorium is an ample, yet intimate stage suitable for music, theater and dance. The Auditorium is equipped with a theater lighting system, wireless digital sound system, acoustical shell and ceiling, dance floor, a Steinway Model D piano, projector, screen, and many other professional-grade appointments. Full-scale opera, musical theater, symphony orchestra, instrumental and concert ensembles, choral and dance performances, and lectures regularly happen here, including performances by our Opera and Musical Theater Ensemble and Ensemble Español, the premier Spanish Dance Company and Center in the United States, which is in-residence at NEIU.

Salme Harju Steinberg Fine Arts Center (FA)

Our Salme Harju Steinberg Fine Arts Center wouldn't be what it is today without the contributions of its namesake, and our fifth University president, Dr. Salme Steinberg. A passionate advocate for the arts and access to education, Dr. Steinberg laid the way for our Music, Dance, Art, and Communication, Media and Theatre majors to follow their dreams, enhance their crafts, and become professionals in their fields. At this location you'll find our Fine Arts Center Gallery, art studios, piano classrooms, electronic music studios, dance studios, workshops, computer classrooms, and practice rooms, as well as art installations throughout the halls.

The Nest (entrance and lobby)

The Nest is our on-campus, apartment-style housing facility, and it is packed with amenities! Get some work done in the Academic Success Center or Study Lounge, or blow off some steam in the state-of-the-art Fitness Center. Hang out in the Game Room or relax and watch some TV with your friends. The Nest also has roommate matching services, parking, on-site laundry, and on-call staff to help you with anything else. And remember that studies show students who live on campus have a better overall college experience, and are more likely to be academically successful and graduate on time.

PE Building/Rec Center

Our PE Complex is here to make sure our students are taking care of their bodies as well as their minds. Get swimming lessons at the pool, work with a personal trainer in the weight room, or challenge yourself at the climbing wall. We also offer sports equipment rentals, five full-sized basketball courts, four racquetball courts and two state-of-the-art group fitness studios. Students also participate in intramural sports and workout on Athletic Field where we have soccer fields, six tennis courts, a softball field, baseball field, and more open space for other activities.

Natural Prairie & Solitary Oak

As you make your way around the Main Campus, near the Physical Education Complex, you’ll see the Solitary Oak, a swamp white oak tree that is between 200 and 250 years old! The swamp oak savanna is an experimental urban natural area that gives visitors a peek into what Chicago looked like before modern construction. The beauty of this area changes with the seasons, and we offer plenty of benches for you to surround yourself in nature.

Ronald Williams Library (LIB)

Named after our third University president, the Ronald Williams Library is the hub of three NEIU Libraries. Across four floors there are plenty of places to work independently or with your classmates, whether it's at the Coffee Shop, or in one of the designated study areas. Our library holds our Learning Success Center and the Center for Academic Writing to get help with your classes, as well as computer labs, printing centers, archives, and a Multimedia Learning Resource Center to get help with technology. And don't forget all the stacks of books for your papers and research!

Bernard Brommel Hall (BBH)

Named for NEIU Professor Emeritus of Communication, Media and Theatre Bernard J. Brommell, BBH houses the College of Arts and Sciences and many of its departments. Filled with labs and lecture-style classrooms, most of our students have at least one class in BBH before completing their degree. BBH has a Greenhouse on the third floor maintained by the Biology Department and air pollution sensors on its roof to aid in research. Since 2008, BBH has also been home to the Student Center for Science Engagement, which provides assistance and preparation for scientifically-driven careers.

Building B (Pedroso Center)

Building B houses one of our most unique facilities, the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs. The Pedroso Center sponsors a variety of events to support and celebrate the diverse student body here at NEIU. It also supports our student activities offices, and serves as an umbrella organization connecting many of our existing cultural programs and resources. Student Leadership Development offices are also housed in this area. Building B has classrooms, one of our largest computer labs, as well as other important offices, like University Honors and Career Development.

Jerome M. Sachs Administrative Building (C)

The Jerome M. Sachs Administrative Building is named after NEIU's first president, Dr. Jerome Sachs. He was an advocate for experiential education, which gave rise to many of our University's programs that are still active today. The Sachs Building, sometimes called the "Beehive" due to its honeycomb-like exterior, houses the Office of the President as well as other administrative offices. It is easily one of our most recognizable buildings!

College of Business and Technology

The College of Business and Technology is fixed with state-of-the-art classrooms, meeting spaces, a computer lab and a student lounge where smaller events are held. It is also home to the Mossadegh Initiative, which teaches NEIU students about becoming responsible leaders by understanding the concept of servant leadership.

Lech Walesa Hall (LWH)

Lech Walesa Hall houses NEIU’s oldest academic unit, the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education. Here, you'll find some of our largest lecture halls, as well as classrooms and computer labs. Lech Walesa Hall is also home to many of our Student Success Programs and Academic Advising. The Office of International Programs is also located in LWH and is the spot where you can talk to staff about study abroad opportunities.

Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS)

The Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies demonstrates NEIU’s urban tradition of education, research, and service. The building—originally conceived by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905—was previously known as the Lincoln Center. CCICS offers an undergraduate and graduate degree in Urban Community Studies and serves students with a wide-range of courses taught from African and African-American perspectives. The building has hosted many notable artists and activists including Lorraine Hansberry, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and Fred Hampton. Today, CCICS remains a center for arts, culture and political discourse in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood with poetry slams, professional jazz concerts and Northeastern’s second largest library.

2021 El Centro

For more than 50 years, El Centro has been dedicated to serving students and community members on Chicago’s Northwest Side. In 2014, El Centro underwent a major expansion project and became the location we have today. Its blue and gold paneling make it hard to miss from the 90/94 expressway and boldly celebrates our school colors. El Centro's modern facility includes technology-enhanced classrooms, laboratories, a student lounge and the Library Resource Center. The third-floor terrace offers spectacular views of the city while you study, relax or snack between classes. At El Centro, students can work on obtaining their bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Justice Studies, Social Work or Special Education.
