Right here is where it all began in 1899, when Northern Arizona University first opened its doors with 23 students, one professor, and two copies of Webster's International Dictionary bound in sheepskin. Today the Flagstaff campus is home to more than 20,000 students and remains deeply committed to student success. Old Main and its twin spires are NAU icons, housing a museum and gallery and presiding over the North Quad, where students use the expanse of grass and trees to study in the sun, throw Frisbees, and balance on slacklines. The quad is bordered by historic buildings, residence halls, academic departments, administrative offices, and the university's contemporary American bistro—the 1899 Bar & Grill.

The impressive new five-story Science and Health Building symbolizes NAU's rise to scientific and research prominence. If you're interested in medicine, dentistry, research, or science education, this is where you will take some of your first steps toward your professional career. Liberal Arts

With its classic brick and ivy exterior, the Liberal Arts building houses the English and History departments as well as University Writing Programs. Here you'll develop written communication and critical thinking skills and an intellectual presence that will serve you throughout your life. Though constructed in 1963, the building's recent renovation installed the latest technology in every classroom and a new state-of-the-art cinema screening space. The two computer labs offer free access to dozens of Macs and PCs, and the building's student lounge is a great place to hang out between classes. Nearby, you'll find classrooms for modern languages, history, philosophy, and pre-law programs.

The University Union

In the heart of campus, the University Union is a popular gathering place that hosts a range of student dining options. Our all-you-care-to-eat dining room features classic favorites, global and ethnic cuisines, vegetarian and gluten-free selections, and a Mongolian grill. You'll also find national brands—like Einstein's Bagels, Pizza Hut, and Starbucks—and other specialty retail options. The union also is the headquarters for many student clubs and is home to such hangouts as the inclusion and multicultural center and The Hub, where you can play pool, shuffleboard, and more. The building also houses offices that provide specialized support for transfer students and student veterans.

Student and Academic Services Building

Our new Student and Academic Services building is home to the Undergraduate Admissions Welcome Center, which is likely to be your first stop when you visit us for a campus tour. Just down the hall is the Student Service Center, where you can add classes, review financial aid, check on billing, make payments, and drop off forms for processing. The building also includes more than 150 offices for faculty and staff and lab space for social science research. On the second floor, you'll find the Lumberjack Mathematics Center, where students have immediate access to faculty, tutors, and math coaches, in addition to self-pacing software—all designed to boost student success in math.

NAU Bookstore

Centrally located right along the campus shuttle route, the NAU Bookstore makes it easy to get the right books for your classes. The store also sells school supplies, art materials, room décor, gifts and accessories, NAU apparel, and graduation products. The Bookstore is also a technology store offering brands like Apple, Dell, Microsoft and Beats by Dr Dre. The campus post office is just downstairs, where friends and family can send you letters and care packages.

Aquatics and Tennis Complex

This stunning new facility accommodates the university's NCAA swimming, diving, and tennis programs and features an Olympic-sized swimming pool, diving platforms, and six indoor and six outdoor tennis courts. You might even catch a glimpse of an international Olympic team doing a little high-altitude training. You can jump in on the fun, too, with recreational activities such as stand-up paddle boarding, open kayaking, log rolling, canoe battleship and cannon ball contests, inflatable volleyball, and more. Be sure to bring your rafts and floaties and join your friends for one of the dive-in movie screenings held throughout the year.

Health and Learning Center

Several services converge under one roof, ensuring our students are healthy and engaged. Our world-class recreation facility features an indoor jogging track; a 40-foot climbing wall; a fully equipped weight room; and dozens of cardio machines. An array of medical services is available through the campus medical center, including urgent care and a full-service pharmacy; the Counseling Center works to enhance student well-being, and Disability Resources promotes inclusion of people with disabilities. The building also houses flexible classroom space, NCAA athletic facilities, and the Green Scene Café, where you'll enjoy the panoramic view of the San Francisco Peaks.

Performing and Fine Arts

Ardrey Memorial Auditorium is the cornerstone to the Performing and Fine Arts Center, encompassing not only Ardey but Clifford White Theater, the School of Music, the Theatre Department and the School of Art. As the largest performance venue of its kind in northern Arizona, Ardrey has welcomed millions of people for a variety of performances—around 150 events each year—ranging from Daniel Tosh and Adam Sandler to Phillip Phillips and Jason Mraz. Student performers also draw audiences for theater and musical productions. With its myriad offerings of arts and entertainment, the Performing and Fine Arts building is not just the hub for arts for NAU, but for all of northern Arizona.

Cline Library

When you need to pull an all-nighter in a studious atmosphere, Cline Library is the place. It's open more than 100 hours per week, often as late as 2 a.m. and even 24 hours a day during finals weeks. Here you can check-out laptops, digital cameras, audio recorders, camcorders, headphones, and other media gear. The second-floor learning studio is a highly configurable workspace for classes of up to 70 students. It's fitted with advanced digital technology, writeable glass surfaces, and video conferencing. The library's 400-seat Assembly Hall hosts guest speakers, film series, and other campus events. You can even grab a snack or satisfy your Starbucks craving at the Scholars' Corner Café.

Native American Cultural Center

The Native American Cultural Center is a place to study, make friends, and connect with Native culture. Designed with input from leaders of 22 tribes, this unique building reflects the university's commitment to Native American students and to helping others across campus and throughout the community learn more about these cultures. The center hosts several cultural events throughout the year that feature Native foods, arts, film series, and more. International Pavilion

This scenic pedestrian pedway and bike bridge intersects the city's urban trail system, landing on south campus at The Suites, a residential community for upper division students. Nearby, the du Bois Center—also called "the Dub"—houses a variety of dining options as well as meeting and social spaces. To the west is the Raul H. W.A. Franke College of Business

A generous donation from William A. Franke in 2007 sparked a new name for NAU's business college as well as transformational support for student skill development, scholarships, and technology. The building was designed with communication and collaboration in mind. Nearly one-third of its 110,000 square feet is dedicated as informal student workspace promoting interaction and collaboration. The grand central staircase cascades through innovative collaboration spaces. Engineering Building

The engineering building provides an environment for learning that matches the high quality of the instructional program, which is named among the top 50 in the US News rankings. The facility promotes close interaction beyond the formal classroom and features breakout areas throughout. South Fields

Situated in what Men's Journal recently called the third-fittest town in America, NAU has a thriving intramural sports program with student recreation facilities throughout campus. The South Campus Recreation Complex features two fully lit artificial turf fields to accommodate soccer, lacrosse, rugby, flag football, softball, and more. The complex also features two sand volleyball courts, an 18-hole disc golf course, and the nearby Challenge Course, featuring a series of adventure-based learning activities. Like many NAU facilities, this recreation complex has been recognized for its sustainable design.

Walkup Skydome

This massive white structure is undeniably our most unusual venue and is visible from the air and from downtown Flagstaff. As the second-largest wood-framed dome in the world, the Skydome covers 6.2 acres, with the roof spanning more than 500 feet and rising 142 feet above the playing surface. An equally impressive statue of our beloved mascot, Louie the Lumberjack, stands guard at the entrance, welcoming visitors for NAU football, basketball, and indoor track and field, as well as for major concerts, commencements, and other sizeable university and community events. Named for former university president J. Lawrence Walkup, the dome recently underwent a major renovation and provides seating for about 10,000.
