In 2016, the School of PA Studies at MBKU graduated the first class of PA students in Orange County. And we are proud to report a perfect 100% pass rate on the board certification exams for the Class of 2016. This is because our students are chosen from hundreds of applicants to represent the best of the best in student leadership, service to the profession and a dedicated commitment to community health. Here, in one of the PA classrooms on campus, our devoted professors develop the minds and clinical skills of these future medical professionals through focused learning and hands-on technique training. The use of state-of-the-art anatomy simulation technology and simulated patient scenario testing in this dynamic learning environment encourages repetition with patient cases, enhancing student confidence and ultimately patient safety. Our PA students take their knowledge into the community, too, at outreach events across the county.

Joseph F. Taylor, OD Simulation Lab

Dedicated in 2016, the Joseph F. Taylor, OD Simulation Lab is a shining example of our institution's commitment to innovation and technology, as we prepare the next generation of health care professionals. The Taylor Lab was donated by Dr. Joseph Taylor, alumnus from the Class of 1949. His foresight enables our SCCO students to work directly with this suite of indirect and direct ophthalmoscopy simulators provided by VR Magic. With this technology, students have the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence, through regular training with lifelike simulation, to evaluate the visible section of the retina. It is this type of hands-on patient exposure that keeps the MBKU experience at the top of the list.

Richard L. Hopping Academic Center

Dr. Richard L. Hopping, President Emeritus, took the helm of the Southern California College of Optometry in 1973. Author of the Optometric Oath, a statement of commitment to the ethical practice of optometry, Dr. Hopping ushered in a period of stability and excellence. By the time of his departure in 1997, the institution had become one of the most well-respected optometry colleges nationally. Today, the Richard L. Hopping Academic Center at the Fullerton campus is the hub of academic achievement at MBKU. Theater-style classrooms provide students with an ideal environment for learning, and lecture capture systems allow for lecture playback at home or on the road for ease of study and enhanced academic success.

M.B. Ketchum Memorial Library

Committed to the pursuit of lifelong learning, the M.B. Ketchum Memorial Library is the crown of the MBKU campus. Perched on the third floor of the academic center and surrounded by study rooms, computer labs, views of a shaded creek outside its floor-to-ceiling windows, the library offers a wealth of resources to students, alumni, faculty and staff. Online access to medical journals and other electronic resources are frequently updated; alumni book donations are regularly accepted to round out the traditional stacks; and knowledgeable staff members concentrate on the ever-evolving advancements in library information technology. Patricia Hopping Commons

A popular gathering ground for back-to-school barbeques, alumni reunions and commencement receptions, the Patricia Hopping Commons is the namesake greenbelt dedicated in honor of Patricia Hopping for her outstanding personal involvement and service to SCCO students, alumni and the Fullerton community. Today, all of the Ketchum University programs make use of this generous green. From a Frisbee toss to a full-scale disaster simulation exercise, the beloved Commons brings classmates and colleagues together to share Southern California sunshine and create social ties across professional health care disciplines.

Warren & Carol Low Student Union

The Warren & Carol Low Student Union was dedicated in 2017 in honor of Dr. Warren Harvard Low, alumnus of the Class of 1952, long-time trustee and advocate for the best student experience at MBKU. With funding from Dr. Low's gift, the student union will see renovations in the near future. Some spaces, like the admissions welcome room have already undergone improvements, offering applicants a welcoming environment for their first visit to campus. It is our goal to provide our students with the academic, interprofessional and social spaces on campus to help each of them not only succeed, but to thrive.

Essilor Student Center

Ketchum University has enjoyed many corporate partnerships over the years. The Essilor Student Center was named to honor a special legacy of goodwill at MBKU. Partners in the MBKU Children's Vision Initiative, Essilor has long supported the university's mission to educate caring, inspired health care professionals. At the Essilor Student Center, students and alumni engage in social and learning activities, including club events, continuing education, networking mixers and more.

Health Professions Building

An expansion effort in 2016 allowed the university to move its clinical services to an 80,000 square foot offsite facility in Anaheim, known as Ketchum Health. The move has allowed Ketchum University to advance on a variety of renovations to the former campus eye care center. It opens up space for the Health Professions Building, a progressive academic environment for interprofessional education, which is transforming the student experience at MBKU. Optometrists, PAs and pharmacists will learn together in both flipped and traditional classroom settings with access to simulation equipment, expanded practice exam rooms and shared social spaces like the new second floor student lounge.

Ernest A. Hutchinson Memorial Amphitheater

At the center of the Fullerton campus stands the Ernest A. Hutchinson Memorial Amphitheater, celebratory location for the annual student talent show, student bowl competition, white coat ceremonies and more. Dr. Ernest A. Hutchinson graduated with Dr. William M. Ketchum, the institution's second president, in the Class of 1913. From the time of his faculty appointment as a physiological optics instructor until his retirement as the president of the Los Angeles College of Optometry 40 years later, Dr. Hutchinson did more to shape the direction and reputation of the school than any other in his era. It is fitting that students and alumni both share their most memorable campus moments in this iconic setting.

With the help of its corporate and private sponsors, Marshall B. Ketchum University has been established as a leader in the strategic use of learning and communication technology. TVCI, the campus executive board room and conference center is among those campus spaces that employs projection and communication technology to conference efficiently with our educational partners around the world. The modern technology encourages communication as far as Japan and South Korea, where Ketchum University is expanding the scope of international optometric practice with two independent programs of higher learning.

In 2016, MBKU renovated an 80,000 square foot clinical facility that allows Ketchum University to expand beyond traditional eye care. The new off-campus, collaborative practice health center offers optometry, and soon, medical care and pharmacy services to the community. Known as Ketchum Health, this clinical center offers a variety of specialty optometric service programs, a dramatic two-story courtyard atrium, multiple patient waiting areas, research facilities, a medical clinic for future PA rotations as well as space for a dispensing pharmacy.

Ketchum Health boasts an intentional design that brings together MBKU's primary disciplines in a clinical setting. In 2016, the University Eye Center opened its doors at Ketchum Health, boasting a large suite for the delivery of comprehensive primary eye care, including 16 dedicated exam rooms and specialty imaging technology. Additionally, the clinic serves as a specialty referral center for low vision patients, vision therapy patients, hard-to-fit cornea and contact lens patients, prosthetic lens and eye patients, as well as a full pediatric eye care center. In the second phase of the health center build-out, the variety of eye and vision care services offered at Ketchum Health will be further enhanced by a dedicated medical clinic and dispensing pharmacy where interprofessional collaborative patient care will take center stage.

At Ketchum Health, patients and student alike are benefitting from a high-end optical retail location, service center and on-site production lab that demonstrate the optometric retail environment and patient experience start to finish. Community members and patients can find a wide array of eye care and vision correction services, including high-end brands, a large selection of children's frames, as well as custom fitting. Smart, modern architectural and interior design choices allow patients to browse thousands of frames and accessories in a comfortable environment. Optometry students and trained opticians ensure that every patient receives personalized care.
