Main

With its iconic rocking chairs, the front porch of Main Building is a great place to relax, read, or gather with friends. It faces Front Quadrangle, the heart of our campus. Students living in Main wake up to a majestic view of Front Quad; single and double rooms are available on the top two floors. On the first floor, you'll find the offices of admission and scholarships and financial assistance--and the Green Drawing Room, where we host speakers and receptions.

Student Apartment Village

Located atop the crest of campus, the Student Apartment Village is the latest addition to our vibrant and diverse mix of housing options. These home-style residences feature single and double bedrooms along with communal living spaces, kitchens, private bathrooms, washers and dryers, and wrap-around front porches with rocking chairs overlooking a shared outdoor space. East & West

East is the oldest building on campus still in use. It is divided into three separate housing sections. Near East Fine Arts, or NEFA, welcomes students with an interest in the arts. Middle East is the Spanish House. Far East is home to the Mind, Body, Spirit community, upper-class students who are interested in living in ways that promote well-being. Overlooking Front Quad, West is prized for its spacious rooms and wide hallways. Our annual Career Connection Conference, or C3, brings successful alumnae back to campus to share the value of a liberal arts education.

Hill Houses

The Hill Houses are a charming neighborhood of historic residential architecture. Carvin House, or the Global Village, houses international and domestic students for intercultural exchange. Like the other Hill Houses, Rath Haus and Rose Hill host small, intimate communities. Interested in community service? You can live in Sandusky Service House. Eastnor is home to our graduate studies office. Hollins offers eight distinctive master's degree programs that serve both men and women. Eastnor also provides a gathering space for our adult Horizon students. In the French House, you can immerse yourself in the French language.

Pleasants Hall

Pleasants is the home of the social sciences: business and economics, communication studies, gender and women's studies, history, international studies, political science, public health, and sociology. Most of these fields of study lead to a thesis or capstone project, which is guided by professors in your major. The computer lab on the second floor is open 24 hours a day.

Theatre

Hollins Theatre features one of the 10 best college theatre programs in the country according to The Princeton Review. Our M.F.A. program in playwriting is also headquartered there. Both have earned honors from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. The 570-seat building includes a flexible front-apron configuration; an automated rigging system; fully equipped scenery and costume shops; a design studio, makeup studio, and light lab; a black box theatre and acting studio; and a sound, projection, and computer lab.

Wyndham Robertson Library

Wyndham Robertson Library received the American Library Association's prestigious Excellence in Academic Libraries award. Its collection consists of more than half a million titles, including print and e-books, DVDs and streaming films, and over 100 electronic databases with access to more than 40,000 journals and newspapers. Librarians support student research through course instruction, one-on-one research consultations and online chat. On the first floor you'll find a coffee shop, as well as the R. Lowell Wine Center for Learning Excellence. Consisting of both the Writing Center and the Quantitative Reasoning Center, the CLE provides academic assistance to students through resources, workshops, and one-to-one tutoring. The library's ground floor houses a 40-seat screening room, and a TV studio and editing room.

Jessie Ball duPont Chapel

The Jessie Ball duPont Chapel serves as the center of spiritual life at Hollins. This interfaith building is open daily with spaces for meditation, prayer, or a quiet place for reflection. All religious and spiritual traditions and observances are welcome. Religious and spiritual offerings include informal programs planned by the chaplain, the spiritual leader of our community; student chaplains, who serve as listening ears, encouragers, peer mentors, and resources for students seeking to find spiritual connections on our campus; and student leaders in the Better Together club, which is made up of representatives from a variety of campus religious constituencies.

Experiential Learning

The Rutherfoord Center for Experiential Learning, a cornerstone collection of programs aimed at getting your education out in the real world in hands-on ways, is housed throughout campus. The building featured here is Turner Hall. On the main floor of Turner, the international programs office – one key pillar of Rutherfoord – is your gateway to study abroad opportunities in over 20 countries with generous financial support of these experiences. More than half of our students graduate with an international learning experience. Another branch of The Rutherfoord Center, the Center for Career Development & Life Design, supports students in accessing expert help with everything from writing a resume to applying for internships. Three out of four students at Hollins complete at least one internship, almost 50% complete more than one, and all students can pursue internship opportunities beginning in their first year. With our Signature Internship Program, sophomores, juniors, and seniors may apply for internships offered by alumnae in various fields and in major cities during our January Short Term. These internships carry academic credit and offer a stipend of $300. Housing is often provided. Turner also houses classrooms and faculty offices for modern languages, classical studies, education, and philosophy, as well as Student Health and Counseling Services.

Swannanoa Hall

Our English department and the Jackson Center for Creative Writing are located in Swannanoa Hall. Hollins has produced four Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, including Natasha Trethewey, who served two terms as U.S. poet laureate, and Annie Dillard, who won the award for Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, which she wrote about a stream close to the Hollins campus. Our writer-in-residence program brings well-known writers to campus each spring. We also host numerous readings each year and an annual literary festival. With three literary magazines produced on campus, students have a variety of outlets to share their creative talents.

Wetherill Visual Arts Center

The Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center, or V-A-C, houses our studio art, art history, and film departments. It includes spacious areas for sculpture and ceramics. Our artist-in-residence program brings to campus a nationally recognized artist each year to teach and work. Our on-campus gallery, the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, features the work of renowned, emerging, and regional artists, and presents a senior studio art major exhibition each spring. The V-A-C also hosts our SGA Senate, where representatives gather weekly to advance initiatives important to students.

Dana Science Building

Dana is the home of mathematics and the natural sciences: biology, chemistry, environmental studies and environmental science, mathematics, physics, and psychology. Our small classes and labs encourage one-on-one interaction with faculty. The Hollins Science Seminar, an annual event for over 60 years, gives students the opportunity to showcase their research projects. The Summer Research Fellows program enables a select number of students to work collaboratively with faculty over the summer, providing a stipend and summer housing to accepted students. SPARC, the Hollins Student Performance and Academic Research Conference, is an event where research is presented to the larger campus community. Dana has the resources required for serious study in the sciences, while remaining comfortable and inviting. The proximity of faculty offices, research and teaching labs, study rooms, and classroom space fosters the strong sense of community enjoyed by both students and faculty.

Moody Student Center

Moody Student Center is the hub of student activity. Here you'll find the dining hall, coffee and snack bar, Hollins Store, meeting and conference rooms, offices for student affairs, and the office of diversity, equity, and inclusion, which works to ensure Hollins provides an inclusive experience for all of the students and employees the university serves. Hollins' Student Government Association also calls Moody home. Student government is a vital part of Hollins life: All undergraduates are members of SGA, and with more than 80 SGA positions, you can be a leader on campus. Moody is headquarters for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Hollins. The DEI office aims to promote racial and cultural understanding and to create and support a campus environment where all students are accepted and can play an active and meaningful role in the life of the school. You belong here, and we will help you find your voice. The most active students here are also the happiest, and many credit involvement in one or several of the more than 30 clubs and organizations on campus as one of the best parts of the Hollins experience. It's easy to find something to get involved in where you can find your niche. In addition, Hollins hosts a wide range of events and activities throughout the year, from live music and comedy performances, movie screenings, and arts and crafts to the always popular Monday Bingo Bash.

Botetourt Hall

Botetourt Hall contains the campus post office, where every student has a P.O. box, and the campus security department, which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to handle both emergency and non-emergency service calls. Athletic Complex

The athletic complex includes a large gym with a 40-foot climbing wall; the Northen Swimming Center; a second gym; and a fully equipped weight room. A member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and NCAA's Division III, Hollins offers nine varsity sports: basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. Our equestrian program is considered among the nation's finest. The Hollins Outdoor Program organizes hiking, camping, skiing, caving, rock climbing, and whitewater canoeing trips.

Tinker

Tinker houses primarily first-year students in air-conditioned rooms. It is divided into nine "wings" (three per floor), with a kitchen, laundry room, study room, and social room on each floor. Community assistants, or CAs, are an important part of life in Tinker and every residence hall. Presser Hall

Presser is home to our music department. Among other accolades, it has earned for Hollins the All-Steinway School designation, given by the world's finest piano maker to just approximately 150 institutions worldwide. The Rath Library and Listening Center contains over 15,000 discs, scores, and books for reference and study. Several ensembles are open to all students. They include the Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Mariachi Ensemble, Mountain Laurels, Talmadge Singers, World Music Ensemble, Valley Chamber Orchestra, and Roanoke Valley Community Band.

Riding Center

Located at the top of the campus loop road, the riding center features large box stalls, an overhead fly-control system, a wash rack with hot and cold running water, two tack rooms, a laundry room, and a comfortable lounge for riders. We also have spacious pastures and paddocks, and a large indoor ring with a climate-controlled viewing lounge. Hollins has an extraordinary group of school horses, all donated by alumnae and professionals who know our reputation for superb care.
