James B. Colgate Hall

James B. Colgate Hall, the administration building, is named after one of Colgate's biggest benefactors, and yes, there is a connection to the toothpaste. In the late 1800s, we changed our name from Madison University to Colgate in honor of the generosity of the Colgate family. Here's another bit of Colgate trivia: the number 13 has legendary significance. We were founded by 13 men with 13 dollars and 13 prayers, and, to this day, it's our lucky number. Every Friday the thirteenth is Colgate Day, which means you'll find alumni and friends worldwide proudly sporting Colgate gear. If you visit campus, you'll start here. Benton Hall

Benton Hall houses Colgate Career Services and provides offices for Thought Into Action entrepreneurship incubator, and the Office of National Fellowships and Scholarships. The building, designed to LEED Platinum sustainability standards, features spaces for career advising, the latest in virtual conferencing tech for on-site job interviews, and a large common rooms for meetings, lectures, and campus events. We know the thought of heading into the workforce after college can be daunting, but with a career services staff committed to early engagement, funding for unpaid internships, and a dedicated network of alumni in a vast array of career fields, Colgate is with you every step of the way.

Ho Science Center

The Robert H. N. Ho Science Center houses the physics, astronomy, environmental studies, geography, and geology departments. It contains a visualization lab, a geology museum, and more than 50 high-tech research and teaching labs. Students and professors from different departments work together here on high-level research that often results in co-authored academic papers. Science students also have the option to study off campus in Australia and Wales, and at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Colgate is the only institution with a program for undergraduates at NIH.

ALANA Cultural Center

The ALANA Cultural Center, representing Africana, Latin, Asian, and Native American cultures, is the hub of diversity and multiculturalism on campus. The center is open to all students, and many take advantage of its cultural programming, its meeting spaces, or its kitchen if they are missing the flavors and tastes of home.  A popular event each fall is held right here on the patio: ALANApalooza. It is part barbecue, and part campus and community party.

O'Connor Campus Center

This is the O'Connor Campus Center, but everyone calls it the Coop. It is our student union, and it's a great place to hang out, grab a bite to eat, or study by the fireplace. Mail services and the WRCU radio station are housed here, as well. On the main floor, you'll find the Center for Leadership and Student Involvement. It's the home for all of our student-run organizations, and a student travel agency to help with booking transportation to nearby airports or bus stations. Colgate has more than 200 clubs, ranging from a cappella singing groups to our internationally ranked debate teams. With so many social outlets, we are definitely not a suitcase school.

Hascall Hall

Hascall Hall is home to the philosophy department and sits in the middle of the Academic Quad. Built in 1884, students saved this building from being demolished in the 1970s, and it is now on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Turn here, and you'll face the Academic Quad. This is an area for lots of outdoor activity, whether it is sunny or snowing. You will see everything from professors holding class outside to some students building snowmen after a fresh snowfall.

Lathrop Hall

In Lathrop Hall you can find the departments of English, and writing and rhetoric. While the exterior looks much as it did when the building was constructed in 1905, the interior has been completely remodeled. It's here that students can hone their public speaking skills in the private practice rooms of our Writing and Speaking Center.

Lawrence Hall

The Keck Center in Lawrence Hall is a modern facility for language learning and support. Private recording rooms, a conference center, and specialized instructional software are all available to assist students in their pursuit of foreign language mastery. Open to all academic majors, the Keck also hosts interns from eight countries to offer conversational language practice.

Memorial Chapel

At the top of the Quad is Memorial Chapel, where many of our religious communities meet--and often mix together. For a number of students, it's a home away from home. The Chapel also is one of the largest multipurpose spaces at Colgate. Every semester, there are various events hosted by students, such as Dancefest or Akapellafest. Past speakers here have included Leon Panetta, Ann Curry, Cornel West, and Gary Kasparov. Other past speakers on campus include Tony Blair, Colin Powell, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and Sheryl Sandberg. The Quad is where first-years gather for orientation activities and it's the site of the activities fair, where students can learn about all the clubs and organizations available to them.

Burke and Jane Pinchin Halls

We're at the edge of the first-year residential quad, which is right next to the Academic Quad, meaning you might have a quick one- or two-minute walk to class in the morning. All incoming students find a home within one of four Residential Commons. Each commons is a community within which students live for their first two years, and with which they continue to affiliate throughout their four years on campus. In addition, every residence hall has several community leaders; they are there for advice and support and to help students meet one another.

Frank Dining Hall

This is Frank, our main dining hall. It's open 24 hours a day and serves locally produced meats, yogurts, and veggies. Some of the produce comes from the community garden on campus. There is something for everyone at each meal, as specialized meal stations offer a wide variety of choices, including vegetarian and vegan entrees. The flags hanging from the dining hall's ceiling are not random. Each one represents a nation of origin for a current student on campus, and every year the flags are updated to reflect the national background of our global student population.

Curtis Hall

Curtis Hall is predominantly home to first-year students, and Drake Hall is a sophomore residence. Housing at Colgate is guaranteed for all four years. For your first year, the traditional double is most common, but triples, singles, and even four- or five-person suites are also available. Laundry facilities are in each hall and there are shared common areas, too. Sophomores also live in residence halls along the hill, and juniors and seniors tend to live in Colgate-owned theme houses on Broad Street or in university apartments or townhouses.

Persson Hall houses political science, international relations, educational studies, and economics. The average class size at Colgate is 17 and the student-to-faculty ratio is about 9 to 1. This provides students with amazing access to research opportunities and a very close connection with professors that lasts long past graduation. In fact, one of the things students appreciate most about Colgate is the personal attention they receive from faculty and staff. This is the famous view from Persson Bridge.

Case Library and Geyer Center for Information Technology

Case Library and Geyer Center for Information Technology houses our outstanding collections and cutting-edge digital media resources, including video and audio studios. There are rooms for videoconferencing and group projects, as well as quiet study areas. Librarians and IT staff work here, so you can get help with your laptop or a research project. The Heiber Cafe by Chobani on the fifth floor is the perfect spot for a study break. And, in addition to our open stacks, we have a robot: the LASR system is one of only six of its kind in the nation. Request a book, and a robotic arm travels as fast as 45 miles per hour to retrieve it. Your book is at the circulation desk within 10 minutes!

Little Hall

Walk through Little Hall at any time and see student artwork hanging on the walls (or from the ceiling). This is home to our art and art history department and to film and media studies. We offer classes in everything from basic painting and printmaking to sculpting and architectural design, and our art history classes span the centuries and continents. You do not have to be an art major to take advantage of these courses. Other features include the Clifford Art Gallery, Golden Auditorium and its 35 millimeter film projector, and several working studios.

Dana Arts Center

We are at the home of our music and theater departments. Brehmer (BRAY-mer) Theater, the main performing arts space on campus, hosts at least one production a month. University Theater puts on a wide variety of provocative productions throughout the year. Major musical groups include the Colgate University Orchestra, the Colgate Chamber Players, and the Concert Jazz Ensemble. The Dana Arts Building is also home to The Picker Art Gallery, which holds a permanent collection of more than 10,000 objects used in teaching, research, and exhibitions.

Base Camp

We've reached Base Camp, the hub for our highly regarded Outdoor Education Program, which provides leadership opportunities for students as soon as their first year. After an intensive training program, these students lead trips and teach PE classes. Classes include backcountry cooking, basic survival, and even tree climbing. Colgate's location is perfect for outdoor activities for beginners and experts. Nearby is everything from hiking to kayaking to caving, and the six million-acre Adirondack Park is only a couple hours away. Did you know Colgate owns a yurt? It is on university property a few miles from campus, and it's available to rent for anyone looking to spend some time in the woods.

Trudy Fitness Center

This 15,000-square-foot LEED gold certified space houses cardiovascular equipment as well as strength and weight training equipment. It is busy from early morning to late evening every day because Colgate is an incredibly active place. In fact, we've been called one of the nation's most fit campuses. The Shaw Wellness Institute plays a key role in keeping campus participants fit through a range of creative programming that promotes healthy lifestyles. One program is Paws for a Break, where students take a break from finals and play with therapy dogs for a few hours.

Class of 65 Arena

Colgate's newest athletic facility is home to the women's and men's ice hockey, soccer, and lacrosse teams. So about the arena's name— this amazing facility was largely funded by alumni donors in the Colgate Class of 1965. The ice rink, with 11 miles of refrigerant tubing underneath, was designed with sustainability in mind, and is actually tied into the building's systems to help supplement heating and cooling.

It's hard to match the school spirit of Colgate. Our 25 varsity sports, including football at Andy Kerr Stadium, compete in NCAA Division I, and we win! Colgate is a great place for athletes, and it's a great place for fans. Many of our teams compete in Patriot League or ECAC championship games, and several have been invited to NCAA tournaments. We often have students named to All-Patriot League teams, and our student-athletes have one of the highest graduation rates in the nation. The Rowdy Raiders Fan Club boosts school pride and student support for our teams with prizes and giveaways at games. Go, Raiders!
