Exit the A train at 145th Street, and you're on your way one of this nation's most important democratic institutions and The City College of New York, the first urban, public institution of higher education in the nation. We are in the heart of Harlem now, in Hamilton Heights, so named because Hamilton Grange, the country home of Alexander Hamilton, one of America's founding fathers and our first Secretary of the Treasury. And so we come to The City College of New York, founded in 1847 as The Free Academy, dedicated to providing a rigorous education to the children of the working class and new immigrants what City's first president called the children of the whole people. The College moved to this campus in 1907, expanding from its original, land-marked buildings to more than thirty-six acres of tree-lined space in historic Harlem. Today, City College continues its mission of access to excellence for everyone. The City College student government operates a 6,200 square foot meeting space to support nearly two hundred student clubs and organizations that reflect the rich diversity of the CCNY student body. These student groups are perfect places for leadership development, collaboration, and teamwork, and represent the wide array of academic, cultural, religious, and social interests that you will find at City College. In fact Ð whatever it is youÕre interested in, you can bet that thereÕs a group of CCNY students who are interested in it too, and a club that sustains them. Perhaps the crown jewel of Shepard Hall is the historic Great Hall, whose height alone spans more than four stories. The Great Hall is a cathedral of learning, boasting stained glass floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase the great seals of our nationÕs other great colleges and universities, from Harvard to the land-grant colleges that can be found across the country. It embodies the college's history and tradition. Just look at the center wall; it displays Edwin Blashfield's original mural, The Graduate, showing the passing of wisdom from Alma Mater to a young scholar as Athena, the muses, and the great thinkers of history look down. This is where freshmen begin their first-year experience at Convocation. The Great Hall also is used for lectures, symposia, graduations, and special events. Albert Einstein, Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor, and General Colin Powell, a CCNY alumnus and another great benefactor, among others, have spoken here.

Picnicking on the grass in this beautifully serene outdoor area known as the Quad, surrounded by Neo-Gothic buildings that would look at home at Yale or Oxford, itÕs hard to believe that youÕre in the middle of one of the greatest, fastest cities in the new world. The Quad was officially dedicated in 1908 by Mark Twain. It is a popular spot for students showcasing their clubs and organizations. And on any given day you may see an entire class meeting under a tree. Of course, itÕs ideal if you need a quiet place to study, eat lunch, or just hang out with your friends. Townsend Harris Hall is named for the founder of City College. It is home to the Physician Assistant Program Ð one of the oldest in the country Ð and the Sophie Davis Biomedical Education program, the undergraduate core of the new CUNY School of Medicine at City College, whose mission is to produce broadly-educated, highly-skilled primary care practitioners who serve underrepresented communities. The Tech Center provides more than three hundred workstations where students can do assignments, check email, and use various software needed for classes. The facility is organized into general computing areas, student training centers, media study rooms, and two-person study rooms with dual flat panel displays, white boards, and laptop connectivity. The Zahn Innovation Center gives students the opportunity to develop the tools they need to transform their ideas into sustainable ventures, and take them to the market place. Open to students across the disciplines, it provides co-working spaces for technology start-ups and social impact enterprises in Marshak, and a prototyping facility in Steinman. It hosts four enterprise competitions a year, with $140,000 in prize money, and offers mentorship and practical workshops, as well as the expert pro-bono legal and accounting services that every start-up needs. Through the Zahn Center, CCNY grads have become successful entrepreneurs, working all over the U.S. and around the world.

Aaron Davis Hall is the cultural hub of upper Manhattan and Harlem. The premiere center boasts an innovative three-theatre performing arts complex for public performances and exhibitions by students as well as professional artists. As part of the City College Center for the Arts, Aaron Davis Hall is the largest performing arts center in Manhattan north of Lincoln Center. It is frequently used by groups like Carnegie Hall, Dance Theater of Harlem, Harlem School of the Arts, and many other community- and nationally-based organizations. The South Campus Great Lawn is a sprawling outdoor oasis adjacent to the City College Center for Discovery and Innovation that has become a popular spot for enjoying serenity and tranquility in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city. Featuring seating areas, walking trails, tree-lined paths, and green space, the South Campus Great Lawn is the latest location for the college's annual Commencement ceremony. It holds more than seven thousand people seated and an additional twenty-six hundred who are willing to stand. It was here that Michelle Obama, in her last commencement address as First Lady of the United States, told the Class of 2016, "You are the American dream."

The Towers consist of one hundred and sixty-four fully furnished, air-conditioned suites that house one to four people each. All suites have a kitchenette that includes a cooktop stove, microwave, full-size refrigerator, sink, cabinets, and countertop space.
