Welcome to CCAD

Welcome to Columbus College of Art & Design, located next to the Columbus Museum of Art in the vibrant Discovery District in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1879, CCAD is one of the oldest and largest private, nonprofit art and design colleges in the United States. CCAD students and alumni use art and design to impact culture and commerce in Columbus and around the world. The iconic 100-foot-high "ART" sign, designed by Doris Schlayn, was installed in the center of campus in 2001. Its base spans the main thoroughfare and anchors the Canzani Center and the Quad, where there is lots of green space for students to enjoy. Canzani Center

The Canzani Center is named after Joseph V. Canzani, CCAD's first president who served the college for more than 40 years. On the lower level of the Canzani Center is Packard Library, the campus library, and the award-winning CCAD Student Agency. The Student Agency is an integral part of CCAD's Marketing & Communications team that employs student videographers, illustrators, animators, and designers. On the first floor is Beeler Gallery, the main exhibition space on campus. Canzani Center also is home to an auditorium and a state-of-the-art 99-seat Screening Room with a 4K projection system and Dolby Atmos sound system. On the top floor of Canzani Center, you'll find Acock Gallery, a smaller space that displays work by undergraduate students throughout the year.

Beeler Gallery

Beeler Gallery is the main public exhibition space at CCAD. Established in 1993, this 6,000-square-foot space shows work from artists and designers—including students, alumni, and faculty—that engages and inspires CCAD's emerging artists and designers, as well as central Ohio community members.

Packard Library

Packard Library houses more than 55,000 books, 275 magazines and journals, numerous digital images and online resources, and a computer lab. In addition to its outstanding collection of books related to art and design, the library also holds a solid liberal arts collection and access to more than 50 million items through OhioLINK. Students have access to drawing aids such as skeletal models and mannequins; virtual reality viewers for smartphones; a Materials Library; college Archives and Rare Books; a relaxing, quiet space in which to study; and WiFi, plus students can check out items such as sun lamps for the winter. A patio and sunken garden are just steps from the library entrance, allowing for a meditative study break anytime.

Kinney Hall

Kinney Hall is home to a number of programs at CCAD. The Fine Arts programs, including ceramics, printmaking, and glass facilities are housed here, as are the studios, classrooms, and offices for the Illustration, Industrial Design, Film & Video, Animation, and Photography programs. Kinney Hall's main floor holds the school's main Digital Print Lab. Downstairs you'll find the Tad Jeffrey FabLab. This state-of-the-art fabrication facility has machining equipment, laser cutters, and multiple 3D printers for student use. Kinney Hall provides students access to both Mac and PC computer labs with state-of-the-art Cintiq drawing monitors.

Battelle Hall

Battelle Hall is home to one of CCAD's two woodshops. There is also a foundry, a welding shop, a mold-making facility, a small-scale metals lab, a plaster room, a tool room (where students can check out tools like drills and grinders), a fabrication area, and studio space for clay processes. Students can also document 2D and 3D work in a dedicated space with sweeps and professional lighting. Jewelry and sculpture classes take place on the second floor, where there are also individual studios for advanced students.

Schottenstein Residence Hall

Schottenstein Residence Hall is a suite-style residence hall with four residents per suite. Each suite has two bedrooms, a common area, and a shared bathroom. The building is staffed 24 hours a day. Laundry facilities are on site, as well as common areas with cable TV and DVD, a community kitchen, and a fitness center. Of special value to students is Schottenstein's ventilated spray booth for convenient use of volatile studio-project materials like spray paint and adhesives. Approximately 230 first-year students, 8 resident advisors, and one professional staff member live in Schottenstein Hall during the academic year. During the summer, it's used to house participants in various pre- and post-college programs.

The Quad

The Quad is the heart of CCAD's campus. This welcoming greenspace is a gathering space for students to relax and meet up with friends. Plus, it's home to CCAD's iconic 100-foot-high red "ART" sign. So it's a great spot to snag a photo. Every fall, students take over the sidewalks for a massive class project. And every spring, the Quad is full of people gathering to look at work during Chroma: Best of CCAD, CCAD's annual showcase of top student work. The Quad is also a great place to check out CCAD's newly updated streetscape, which was completed in 2018, and includes new sidewalks, benches, lounge chairs, and additional greenspaces.

Crane Center

The Loann Crane Center for Design was built in 2005 and is a vibrant, versatile, three-story building that includes a cafe, offices, and flexible, high-tech design space. It's home to the Interior Architecture & Design and Advertising & Graphic Design programs. You'll find Crane buzzing with activity, especially during the Art Fair & Marketplace, and Chroma: Best of CCAD, where CCAD showcases the best student work of the year. Out front is the Quad, which is often a gathering spot for students tossing frisbees, listening to music, and hanging out.

Design Square Apartments

The Design Square Apartments building, known as DSA, was completed in 2009 and is home to apartment-style suites housing four residents per apartment, each with a private bedroom. Students have access to a media room and lounge area, fitness center, and the main campus dining hall, called The Market. Also located in DSA is Ampersand Emporium, your one-stop-shop for CCAD swag, from T-shirts to stickers, designed and conceived by the creative minds of the CCAD Student Agency.

The Marketplace

The Market is a full-service dining hall that provides all-you-care-to-eat dining. Students can use meal plans or pay the set meal price with cash or card, and guests are welcome. The Market offers eight distinct food stations, including a made-to-order pizza oven, a salad bar, vegetarian and vegan options, a main entree bar, a grill, a deli, a dessert station, a beverage station, and a breakfast station. With lots of tables, a scattering of TVs, and great views to the campus Quad, The Market is more than a dining hall, it's a center for collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas among students, faculty, and staff.

CCAD Design Studios on Broad

Design Studios on Broad (known as DSB) houses first-year CORE classes, Fashion Design, the Master of Fine Arts program, the Cloyd Family Animation Center, and CCAD's Corporate & Community Partnerships program. DSB is a creative hub where you'll find emerging fashion designers creating new concepts in incredible natural light, and using high-tech machinery, like CCAD's new textile printer, which can turn students' designs into new fabrics.

Community Engagement

Sitting at the intersection of Cleveland and Broad, this entrance to the Design Studios on Broad building is one of the key places where CCAD welcomes the broader community to campus. It is through these doors that youth, teens, and adults from the Greater Columbus area come to learn a new creative or professional skill by engaging with CCAD's Continuing and Professional Studies workshops and classes. This is also where CCAD invites forward-thinking organizations to co-create projects with the college's expert faculty, talented students, and skilled alumni to solve the real-world challenges of today and tomorrow. This past year alone, CCAD developed 24 projects in 28 courses with approximately 380 students working alongside organizations like Airstream, Cardinal Health, Madison-USA, the Furniture Bank of Ohio, COSI, and the Columbus VA. CCAD students redesigned beds for families in need; told veterans' stories through animation, video, and podcasting; reimagined systems within the operating room; developed branding for an academy in Somalia; and unveiled public art for Columbus' growing electric car infrastructure.

Graduate Programs

The third floor of Design Studios on Broad is home to CCAD's MFA program. The MFA in Visual Arts offers students an intensive studio environment under the guidance of faculty mentors. Students investigate a diversity of practices through rigorous seminar, studio, and professional courses, and leave with a clear sense of purpose. Faculty pose challenging questions, promote inclusivity, and support serious investigation into contemporary visual creation. The MFA space includes individual student studios, a smart graduate seminar room, and faculty offices. In addition, CCAD's entire campus of labs, shops, computer complexes, darkrooms, studios, and library are available to graduate students for research and studio work.

Cloyd Family Animation Center

The Cloyd Family Animation Center is a new, state-of-the-art hub of animation located in the Design Studios on Broad building at CCAD. Completed in 2018, the facility features the latest technology for 2D, 3D, and experimental animation, including a dedicated stop-motion animation lab, virtual reality stations, and computer labs with state-of-the-art Cintiq drawing monitors. Plus, there's a new gallery that showcases animated and illustrated work. The center also includes a window to the Ohio Film Group, a production and post-production studio where students can land internships and jobs.

Off Campus

Columbus College of Art & Design is located in the middle of Columbus' thriving downtown, with coffee shops, a grocery store, innovative museums, restaurants, sports arenas, and historical landmarks like the Thurber House all within a short distance from campus.

Columbus Museum of Art

Columbus Museum of Art is right next door to Columbus College of Art & Design. Established in 1878, the museum boasts an impressive permanent collection, including early cubist paintings by Picasso and Juan Gris, as well as works by Cézanne, Degas, Matisse, Monet, Edward Hopper, and Norman Rockwell. The museum also has the world's largest public collection of works by Columbus native George Bellows. The museum also has a cafe and outdoor sculpture garden. Best of all, admission is free to CCAD students.

North Market

Established in 1876, North Market is Columbus' vibrant public market made up of Ohio's best independent merchants, farmers, and makers. From Polish cuisine to craft ice cream, from fresh baked goods to organic produce, North Market is the perfect place to go to grab a bite or shop for the week. Once a month, stop by for Night Market, an outdoor open-air market featuring local entrepreneurs held every third Friday July through October.

Arena District

For sporting events and concerts, head to Columbus' Arena District. The Columbus Blue Jackets NHL team plays at Nationwide Arena, while the Columbus Clippers, the AAA-affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, play at Huntington Park. For concerts, check out Express Live!, an indoor and outdoor venue that has featured artists like the Foo Fighters, Mumford and Sons, and John Legend. The Arena District is also home to McFerson Commons (also known as Arch Park), a 2-acre public green space perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun.

Short North

The Short North Arts District is a vibrant neighborhood near Downtown filled with murals, art galleries, restaurants, nightclubs, and independent boutiques. The neighborhood is especially bustling on weekends, particularly during the monthly Gallery Hop. Other popular events include the annual HighBall Halloween, which is renowned for its intriguing costumes and outlandish entertainment, and the Doo Dah Parade, an annual parody of Fourth of July parades.

Franklin Park

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens offers world-class horticulture, art and nature-based exhibitions, and educational programs. Situated on 40 acres on the eastern side of Franklin Park, the Conservatory features the historic 1895 John F. Wolfe Palm House, 83,000 square feet of glasshouses, and botanical gardens. Here, visitors can view the largest collection of glass artwork by Dale Chihuly in a botanical garden and the work of internationally recognized light artist James Turrell, whose Light Raiment II illuminates the John F. Wolfe Palm House every evening from dusk until dawn.
