Mary Help of Christians Basilica

Built in 1893, adorned with award-winning painted glass windows, the basilica is the spiritual home of our campus, with our monks offering prayers throughout the day and daily Mass available at 11am with Student Mass at 7pm on Sundays. In 2021 a generous donor gave the basilica its most remarkable aspect a hand-carved crucifix which draws you in to a more profound spiritual experience. A national historical landmark, the basilica is the first place your entire freshman class will gather and the last place you will all gather for your graduation.

Sports Performance Center

In 2018 the Sports Performance Center underwent a complete overhaul with the addition of customized weight lifting equipment, new flooring, and a 1,350 square foot artificial turf training area that serve all our athletic programs and the campus community at-large. The facility features twelve weightlifting stations with customized racks, benches, bars, and plates, branded dumbbells, a 30-yard turf sprinting and plyometric area, and many more features to enhance the performance and experience of Belmont Abbey College students. The facility is open to the entire Belmont Abbey community, including all students, faculty/staff and monastery to help develop the whole person in body, mind, and soul.

Dining Hall

The place for fellowship and nutrition, the dining hall offers many flexible options. Students choose between a delicious rotating menu and daily standbys like the salad bar, sandwich bar, and pizza oven. The cafe hosts themed meals and activities like international donut day and sushi making lessons. A dietitian consults on the menu. Food is served buffet-style. There are two main options for meal plans, the first is unlimited plus 100 flex dollars to spend at our other dining spot, the second is 14 meals a week and 200 flex dollars. Other options are available for commuter students. Our chef can also customize a plan for allergies and special diets.

Science Labs

Our vision for our science labs is coming to fruition. In 2018, new chemistry and physics labs opened and in 2019, a refurbishing of the science building entrances was also completed. In 2021, our new biology labs opened supporting our already very successful biology program, which has a greater than 90% acceptance rate into graduate and medical schools. The new labs bring state of the art experiences to our students who are pursuing fields in medicine, physical therapy, veterinary medicine, and more. The science building holds our math and science related classes, including biology, psychology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics.

The Library

The library contains the knowledge of generations. It hosts a collection of rare books, dating back to the 15th Century, in addition to modern tools like access to over a hundred databases with thousands of e-books and journals available. Free tutoring is hosted everyday in the lower level. Professors are available on a drop-in basis to help you with questions you have about their area of expertise. The library also provides for special accommodations in testing. The librarians are a great source for researching papers and other assignments. Large format printing is available on the main floor and around campus - each student gets 600 free regular prints a semester.

Our Residence Halls

College is your home away from home and your on campus life is a large part of that. The majority of Abbey students live in our residence halls. St. Scholastica, for women, and St. Benedict for men are open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. These suite style halls accommodate two students sharing a common space and a bathroom connected to their individual rooms. There are gathering areas and a kitchen shared by the whole building. Other halls provide apartments setups or traditional shared rooms. Residence Assistants plan activities and our campus police patrol 24 hours a day. Two new residence halls will add more options and will open Fall 2023.

Student Commons

The Abbot Walter Coggins Student Commons is open 24 hours, 7 days a week for student use. Students congregate here to play games together, study together, and connect. This is a designated student space where many events and club meetings happen. The Monks, Ballroom Dancing Club, and the Campus Activity Board, also host events here. The President's Ball, the widely attended fall formal, takes place here. The student activities office plans exciting events and runs giveaways like tickets to Charlotte Knights baseball games, the movies, and more. The Crusader Success Hub, central to all student business needs is co-located in the commons featuring the registrar, student accounts, and financial aid.

The Haid Theatre

Started by our first Abbot Leo Haid, theatre has always been a part of the Abbey. You never know who you will see up on stage- students, professors, monks, and members of the local community come together for productions. Musicals, dramas, comedies, Shakespeare, we do it all! The Haid Theatre is home to The Abbey Players, North Carolina's oldest continuous theatre company. The 24 hour theatre project is an annual student run event- in one day, groups write, direct, and perform original plays for a packed audience. Every Christmas a variety show highlights the hidden talents of our students, faculty, staff and monks. The Haid Theatre is a local gem.

The Wellness Center

The wellness center located on the backside of our Haid Theatre; it's where we look after the physical well-being of our students. The nurse practitioner advises on any illnesses or long term issues students have at no cost to our students and can write prescriptions. Mental health is health too. Counseling services meets with students and supports them through any issues they may be dealing with- all counseling services are free and absolutely confidential.

Academic Amenities

Built in 1882, Stowe hall was the first academic building; the monks made the bricks by hand. With an average class size of 17 and a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1, education at Belmont Abbey is still individualized to each student. The small classes lead to engaged classroom discussions and plenty of chances to ask questions. Every professor hosts office hours- stop by and get to know them and discuss your writing, your insights, your needs, and any papers or assignments you have. With such dedicated professors, it's no wonder that the U.S. News & World Report ranks us as #4 in Undergraduate education for our region.

Holy Grounds Coffee Shop

Holy Grounds Cafe is our second option for dining on campus. The coffee shop and grill serve a variety of tasty options- if you are craving a morning latte, a hamburger for lunch, or an afternoon smoothie, just use the flex dollars that come with your meal plans. Holy Grounds is a great place to work on a group project or to meet with a study group. The large TVs are popular for impromptu movie nights to gather up some friends and plug in your laptop. The stage hosts an open mic event a few times a semester where people can perform and entertain the crowd that gathers.

Quad (Outdoor Commons)

On sunny days, you will find students playing Frisbee or quietly studying outdoors. On these days, professors will often decide to have class outside. A tree covered canopy makes for a popular meeting spot for friends to meet up with smoothies or coffee from Holy Grounds! In 2021, a new Frisbee Golf course was built on this site, adding to its popularity as a hangout spot. The valley anchored on each end by two beautiful walking bridges separates the academic side of campus from the residential side.

St. Joseph Adoration Chapel

Dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, the St. Joseph Adoration Chapel is open at all times. Built in 2008, it is one of the most peaceful places on campus. It features a unique structure that both invites you in and makes you feel part of the surrounding landscape. Faculty, staff, monks, students and the community sign up for adoration hours between 8am and 9pm. Mass is held here on Tuesday evenings and students lead praise and worship on Wednesdays. The chapel is often the last place our students visit before leaving after graduation. Our center is in Jesus Christ, and this chapel is at the heart of our student experience.

Wheeler Athletic Center Gym

The Wheeler Athletic Center is the hub of athletic activity on campus. On this main court our men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams play their games cheered on by "the red sea" as our fans are known. The rowdy crowd gets loud at home games, especially during the playoffs. The facility has complete men's and women's locker rooms and is open to the entire campus community when athletic activities are not scheduled. Many of our intramural events also take place here, as well as alumni games at homecoming, and our "raise the red' event at orientation, where you'll learn our alma mater and make new friends.

Alumni Field

Soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey compete on alumni fields -- the place where championships have been won and competition is king. Come and fill the stands, raise the red, and cheer on the Crusaders. Surrounding our alumni fields are our fully lighted Abbey Yard, where our baseball team plays, and our softball field. The tennis courts are just behind the trees and beyond that are new practice fields for field hockey and lacrosse. Consistent winners of the Conference Carolinas Sportsmanship trophy, our teams not only compete but demonstrate virtue win or lose. Plans for a new track and field facility that will adjoin these fields are nearing completion.

Sacred Heart Extension

Sacred Heart extension, just south of our main campus, used to be an independent women's college before it merged with Belmont Abbey. Today it hosts classes for mainly education, nursing, and sports management majors. Shuttle buses run between classes every hour to take students to and from our main campus. Just across the highway, once you're at Scared Heart, you're halfway to downtown Belmont. Belmont is known for its historic main street, coffee shops, and restaurants. For as peaceful as Belmont is, it's hard to believe that we're twenty minutes from uptown Charlotte with its museums, concerts and other events!
