Hamer Center Student Activities

The Campus Center is a central hub for AB students. The Campus Center houses Heiner Hall, the main dining location. "Heiner Diner," as students traditionally call it, offers students a variety of food stations, some of which are made to order. Other dining options include the on-campus restaurant, EJ & Emma's at the Cave, and Jazzman's Coffee Shop. The Campus Center is a true "one-stop shop," also housing study rooms, the AB Bookstore, a full service post office, and one of our campus fitness centers.

Paul Jones Hall

Paul Jones Hall, known by most as "P-J", is home to the School of Music, a division of the College of Education and Music. The building was originally built in 1961 to serve as an all-male residence hall. Since, there have been renovations to the interior to provide our music students and faculty with offices, classrooms, and individual practice rooms. Looking to compose or edit music? The piano lab houses ten state-of-the-art keyboards integrated with a computer system. P-J is also home to the "West Virginians" rehearsal space. The WV's are AB's premier vocal ensemble. With over ten vocal and instrumental groups, AB offers an ensemble to fit your interests

Whitescarver Hall

We are now in front of Whitescarver Hall. Built in 1912, Whitescarver is the oldest building on campus and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Whitescarver houses a state-of-the-art robot simulator laboratory, where students are able to use the latest tools in health science instruction. In the SIM lab, nursing, athletic training, and physician assistant studies students are able to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom in a highly realistic healthcare environment by diagnosing and treating simulated human patients that talk, breathe, respond to medication, and carry out other human functions. In addition to the SIM lab, Whitescarver is home to a brand new academic space, as AB recently recently renovated the third floor thanks to a $75,000 donation. The funds were used to create more educational opportunities on campus and provide additional classrooms, learning laboratories, and space for high and low fidelity learning simulators and models.

Kemper-Redd Science Center

We are now at Kemper-Redd Science Center. Kemper-Redd is home to the College of Science, Technology and Math, which includes the majors of biology, chemistry, mathematics, computing, environmental science, natural science, and radiography. Inside, you'll find biology, chemistry, physics, and computer labs, as well as an anatomy lab and lecture halls. Additionally, posters featuring student research adorn Kemper-Redd's hallways, as many science, technology, and math students collaborate with AB faculty on research projects, some of them being published before they graduate. Faculty-guided research is encouraged and promoted throughout the disciplines at Alderson Broaddus. Our students also have the opportunity to participate in the annual Undergraduate Research Day at the state capitol, which gives legislators and West Virginian institutions the chance to interact with students and witness how they are revolutionizing the future. Students who walk the halls of Kemper-Redd are setting high standards; Science, technology, and math students overall have an impressive track record, as 98% of these graduates are accepted into graduate or professional schools, including medical, pharmacy, and dental school.

Wilcox Chapel

We are now standing at the entrance of Wilcox Chapel. Constructed in 1976, Wilcox Chapel is one of the most striking buildings on campus. Inside, it features a beautiful wood ceiling, stained glass window, and quaint view of Philippi. Alderson Broaddus is affiliated with the American Baptist Church, but offers Non-Denominational Chapel services every Thursday from eleven to noon to accommodate our students of differing backgrounds and beliefs. Although attending Chapel is not required, no classes are held at that time on Thursday to give everyone the opportunity. Also taking place in Wilcox Chapel are music concerts, dramatic presentations, opening convocation, honors convocation, and baccalaureate. The plaza located outside of Wilcox Chapel was recently renovated and dedicated in honor of Dr. Jean Cunningham '53. The Dr. Jean Cunningham Chapel Plaza features the new home of the cross that once stood high upon the iconic bell tower and serves as a beautiful and inviting space all to take in the peaceful surroundings of the mountains. The cross also serves as an outward expression of ABU's deep, ongoing commitment to its mission and heritage as a faith-based institution.

Burbick Hall Administration

We are now on the deck of Burbick Hall, overlooking the town of Philippi. Philippi is known as the site of the first land battle of the Civil War. Our unique mascot, the Battler, was originated in honor of the Civil War and AB's location on Battle Hill. Burbick Hall, formerly known as New Main, was built in 1978, after the destruction of Old Main due to a fire in 1977. Burbick is home to administration offices and the education division of the School of Education and Music. Home to the Office of Admissions, hundreds of families pass through Burbick yearly to see all that AB has to offer. Next stop the Office of Financial Aid, where families are pleased to see how AB can be affordable regardless of economic circumstances.

Pickett Library

The Pickett Library and Funkhouser Auditorium was added to campus in 1957. Pickett holds over 120,000 volumes of print, non-print, and audio-visual materials. A large main library, an audiovisual classroom, two computer labs, and multiple study rooms are available for students. The ground floor is home to the Academic Center for Education Success, also known as ACES. ACES offers tutoring, help with time-management and organization, and disability services.

Funkhouser Auditorium presents the annual musical, biennial Opera Scenes production, and the Homecoming Pageant, as well as other social functions. Funkhouser was remodeled to house 496 seats, new lighting, sound booth, and an orchestra pit for the building's anniversary in 2013.

Withers Brandon Hall

Withers-Brandon Hall, known to most as "W-B", is home to Alderson Broaddus University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which includes programs in English, communications, visual arts, Ministry and Leadership, psychology, political science, criminal justice and legal studies. Also located in W-B is the College of Business Management, which is comprised of programs in accounting, marketing, business administration, and sports management. Built in 1921, the building was originally a gymnasium, but was renovated to classroom space when the Memorial Coliseum was constructed. The ground floor features large art workshops; Battler Studios—the University's brand new on-campus recording studio, and the Joan Burbick lecture hall, boasting smart technology and state-of-the-art classroom equipment. Also found in W-B is the newspaper office, a data analysis center, and facilities for psychological and social research. Information and photos of the University's international study abroad opportunities and mission trips adorn the halls.

Benedum Residence Hall

We will now explore AB's student living. Every residence hall received brand new furniture in 2013 and offers free laundry room use for students.

Benedum Hall, typically co-ed and housing freshman, is AB's only community-style residence hall. All floors have two common bathrooms, laundry facilities and common kitchens on the second and third floors. Students relax and socialize on the first floor lounge.

Priestly Hall is a co-ed, suite-style, and home to underclassmen. The building is enclosed around a central courtyard. Each suite has four bedrooms, one bathroom, and a common living room. "Priestly Pit," a game room and lounge, is the location of many hall social events.

Alderson Broaddus University has a history of academic innovation in the health sciences, establishing the nation's first master's program in Physician Assistant Studies and the state's first bachelors program in Nursing. To accommodate these revolutionary programs, Myers Hall of Health Sciences was constructed in 1973. Myers has both lecture classrooms and clinical skills laboratories for hands-on learning. On the ground floor, PA students study the human body in the state-of-the-art gross anatomy laboratory by combining virtual and practical experience. Myers has a lively student lounge, where students can always be found relaxing or participating in study groups.

Rex Pyles Arena

Constructed in 1969, The Memorial Coliseum consists of Rex Pyles Arena and the adjacent domed pool. Game nights at AB are electric, with students packing the "Battle Zone" to cheer on their fellow Battlers. On the ground floor of the Coliseum, you will find our athletic training facility, complete with the latest technology in sports medicine, and our renovated weight room. Offices and classrooms of the Athletic Training division of the College of Health Sciences are inside the Coliseum.

The Coliseum plays an important role in the lives of all Battlers, as during commencement, they walk through the traditional channel of professors receiving congratulations, on route to receive their diploma.

Kincaid Hall is a three-wing open residence hall, built around a central courtyard with a very social atmosphere. Kincaid is a co-ed, suite and apartment-style residence hall, comprised primarily of upperclassmen and transfer students. Suites consist of one bathroom, living room, and three bedrooms that primarily house two students per room. Apartment-style rooms include between one and three bedrooms, one bathroom, one living room, and a full kitchen. Living rooms are furnished with a couch, chairs, and table. Kitchen suites and apartments are equipped with a dining table.

Completed in Fall 2013, the new residential village is comprised of Gold Hall, Blue Hall, and University Hall. A fourth new residence, Battler Hall, is located near the Memorial Coliseum.

Battler Hall and University Hall are co-ed suite-style housing comprised primarily of upperclassmen. Each suite has two bedrooms, two dressing rooms, and a shared bathroom for four people.

Gold Hall and Blue Hall are co-ed, upperclassmen apartments. Each apartment has two bathrooms, a common living area with a couch and table, and a kitchen furnished with a microwave, refrigerator, and range top.

We are now on the turf at the Multi-Sport Performance Stadium, where Battler football, men's and women's lacrosse, and men's and women's soccer teams can be found vying for the victory. Completed for the Fall 2013 season, this beautiful facility features double deck home side seating, luxury boxes, and concessions. Locker rooms, equipment rooms, and an on-site athletic training facility can be found below the visitors seating. Marching band and spirit teams complete the exciting game day atmosphere, where the environment is promised to be historical and thrilling, as 2012 and 2013 were the inaugural season for numerous sports teams.
