Welcome to Ballarat Clarendon College. My name is Eva and I will be one of your tour guides. The Sturt Street campus is for students from Years 5 to 12. We have over 900 students at this site, over 150 of whom are boarders. The school aims to provide high quality learning experiences in everything that we do, whether we are in the classroom, on the stage, playing sport, in Chapel, involved in our service program, or travelling overseas, so that we can develop the knowledge and skills needed to make good decisions about how we want to live our lives beyond school.

As a school, we belong to the Uniting Church in Australia, and we all attend a weekly chapel service, conducted by our Chaplain. There is also a service each Sunday, attended by the College boarders and open to the College community. These services challenge us to think in a Christian context about our values and beliefs and about our responsibilities as community members, both inside and outside school.

Café College is a central hub of the school. Our boarders eat their meals here in the morning and at night, with delicious food provided for breakfast and dinner. During the day it is shared with the day school. We can relax in the comfortable contemporary surroundings, share quality time with our friends and purchase food throughout the day from the café. In better weather the southern doors can be opened out onto Wanliss Square, where we hold assemblies and concerts.

Everyone at school is encouraged to be as physically active as possible, and to manage our time to include sport and exercise. Our physical education facilities are in this area. Classes run each day in the Fitness Centre containing weights, rowing machines and an aerobics space. The swimming pool is also used for classes, squad training, and rehabilitation by some of our elite athletes. We can also use this area outside school time. The Gym is used for PE classes and after school for basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton and a host of other games and sports.

Middle School

Hi, I'm Fraser and I'll be the guide for the next part of the tour. The Middle School includes students from Year 5 to Year 8. Students have classes in English, Mathematics and History in this building and travel throughout the school for lessons in other subjects. It is an open, flexible space and allows teachers to work together to arrange classes as they need to, so that we can easily move from larger groups to working individually, depending on how we are learning at that time. Each student in this school has a Learning Mentor, who we meet with each day and who is the first point of contact for our parents.

Sewell Pavilion

The Sewell Pavilion is a large multi-purpose space used for assemblies, meetings, dinners, viewing sport and as an exam hall.

The Oval is used for PE and sports such as athletics, cricket, football and soccer. It also provides a great recreational space for students at lunch time and recess.

Fraser Library

We are very fortunate at our school to be able to learn in some beautiful, modern buildings, which have been designed carefully to fit their purpose. The Fraser library is light and bright and contains several teaching spaces, with a large collection of fiction and non-fiction books, newspapers, journals and magazines. There are several study pods which are based on a design from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Through the library, we also have access to e-books to view on our laptop computers.

Coutts Science Centre

One of our newest and most inspiring buildings is The Coutts Science Centre, which has eight classrooms, six cutting-edge laboratories, and a 90 seat lecture theatre. There is also a vertical laboratory, which has been designed together with scientists from the University of Melbourne and the Australian Synchrotron, who come and visit and share their research with us. This building is a big statement that the school wants us to be excited about science and to feel that through studying it, we can make a significant contribution to the world and to humanity.

Senior School

Hi, my name is Ruby. The Senior Centre is designed to meet the needs of our Year 11 and 12 students, as they prepare for life beyond school. The building includes flexible arrangements for classes, discussion groups, and presentations, including eight classrooms, a lecture theatre seating 200, study spaces and office space. One of the most important aspects of being at Clarendon is the relationship that we have with the teachers, particularly the house teachers in the Senior School as we prepare for our VCE exams. They go out of their way to support us, answer our questions and help us through this important decision-making time.

Performing Arts Centre

Performing Arts at Clarendon is very popular and everyone has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, to sing, to act, or to dance, in a band, a choir or an ensemble. Each year, many students step outside their comfort zone and take part in one of the school productions for the first time. There are a large number of smaller rooms at the front of the building for private lessons in a wide range of instruments. The rear has larger rooms used for drama, dance & music classes, which are part of the curriculum throughout the school.

Morrow Centre

At Clarendon, everyone gets to see their artwork on display in a gallery. The Morrow Centre is one of a number of beautiful old houses on Sturt Street that have been renovated and turned into wonderful teaching and learning spaces. We can study painting and drawing, ceramics, sculpture, photography, and visual communication and design. A new exhibition is developed each month with work displayed from ELC to Year 12. Each exhibition is officially opened and parents and friends are invited.

Girls Boarding House

Hi, my name is Will and I am a boarder from western Victoria. At Clarendon we have two boarding houses, for approximately 75 girls and 75 boys. Most of our boarders come from western Victoria and southern New South Wales, with a few international students. The tutors in each house get to know the boarders extremely well and provide the safety and support that we need, living away from home. The girls in Years 7 to 10 live in Dumbarton House, in shared accommodation. Those in Years 11 & 12 have spacious single rooms. We eat our meals in the Café, but we also have kitchens and social areas where we can relax together.

The Boys Boarding House is located on the first floor of the main building. The younger boys have shared accommodation, while senior boys have single rooms. We all have our own study desk, drawers, wardrobe space and bed. There are several common rooms in each house, where we can chat, watch TV, listen to music or read.

Each summer, over 150 of us are involved in the rowing program. We train and race on Lake Wendouree, 200m north of the College, where we have this magnificent boatshed. On the ground floor, we have a fleet of boats, along with coaches' launches. Upstairs there is a large social and viewing area, with memorabilia celebrating the school's rowing history. Each year, the major event is the Head of the Lake Regatta, where we compete against the other Ballarat schools. Thank you for joining us on the tour of the Sturt Street Campus.
