Welcome to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a large public research university located on more than 1,400 acres in the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign. Considered to be a "Public Ivy," UIUC or as it is often called, "Illinois," is comprised of seventeen colleges. It is known for strong programs and advancements made through research in engineering and the sciences. Inside the English Building, the English department at Illinois offers classes in literature, film, creative writing, and writing studies. Programs, faculty, scholarly journal publishing and research all contribute to its position in the top twenty English departments in the country. The English Building is also home to the Center for Writing Studies, the office of International Programs, and the Program in Jewish Culture and Society.

This domed building near the southern end of the main quad serves as both a place for academic instruction as well as performances. Often used for Economics classes, Foellinger Auditorium is UIUC's largest lecture hall, with a seating capacity of just over 1,900. Notable guest speakers have included Jane Addams, Robert Frost, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Buckminster Fuller.

The motto of UIUC's Institute of Genomic Biology is "Where science meets society." This brand new 186,000 square-foot facility is devoted to innovative research on treating chronic diseases, managing emerging pathogens, maintaining a healthy food supply, and exploring the ethical and legal issues surrounding genomic biology in general. Professors and students travel to present their research papers, and visitors hold seminars at UIUC throughout the year.

Illini Hall is home to the Department of Statistics, which offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs. Major research areas include biostatistics, complex systems, large-scale data analysis, and computational biology. The department also operates as a group of consultants for outside clients, providing students with important real world experience and application of classroom knowledge.

The Illini Union Bookstore is one of the largest independent college bookstores in the country, and is located inside the new Illini Union building. Open every day of the week during the academic calendar, the Bookstore will be your one-stop shop for course textbooks, school supplies, Illinois outerwear, and general dorm-living items. A new useful feature called "textbook comparison shopping" allows students to compare the Bookstore prices to those of other online retailers.

At the heart of student and campus life is this building, the Illini Union. Amenities include a hotel with space to sleep 90 guests, an art gallery, food court, computer lab, bowling alley, and arcade. UIUC has no shortage of social and recreational opportunities, boasting more than 1,000 student organizations and clubs, most of which use the Union for meetings.

The Natural History Building is home to the botany, geology, and zoology departments. Designed in the American High Victorian Gothic style, it was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. More than 4,000 students enroll in geology classes each year and engage in collaborative research with professors on campus as well as in Arizona, Utah, and the Caribbean.

Constructed over one hundred years ago, the Noyes Laboratory houses the School of Chemical Science, which is found within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. A leader in the field of chemistry, the students and professors in the School of Chemical Science conduct groundbreaking research, including a project supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. In addition to classrooms and labs, the Noyes Lab also contains the Chemistry Library.

Students interested in psychology will find a wide variety of areas of study to pursue such as Behavioral Neuroscience, Social-Personality, and Visual Cognition and Human Performance. The eight-story Psychology Building is home to numerous classrooms, laboratories, computer labs, and a research library. There is also a video laboratory that is used for research involving observations.

Formerly called the East Chemistry Building, The Roger Adams Laboratory is home to two academic departments: the Department of Biochemistry and the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The latter is one of the oldest chemical engineering departments in the nation, but renovations of the facility and continuous additions to the curriculum and program offerings have made it cutting-edge. It consistently ranks in the top 10 for undergraduate and graduate education.
