Welcome to the Yale School of Management. My name is Erin Manning. My classmates and I will be taking you on a virtual tour of Edward P. Evans Hall, our home on Yale’s campus in New Haven, Connecticut. As I show you around the building, I’ll also be telling you about Yale SOM's mission—educating leaders for business and society—and how it guides our community, motivates our curriculum, and inspires our alumni.

Before we begin, let me explain how you can explore our virtual space. Each tour stop is listed in a sidebar to the left of your screen. You can also click the arrow on the righthand side of your screen to advance to the next tour stop. Within each tour stop you’ll find camera icons and additional 360 views that you can click to reveal more content for the space you are viewing. Lastly, you’ll find supplemental media at the bottom of your screen on most tour stops that help you explore each space in more detail.

Student Life

Each day, hundreds of students pass through SOM's Ligon-Lamsam Student Commons. The heart of student life, this space is used for studying, hanging out, and community events. Don't miss the 360 icon for a glimpse inside our student lounge.

If you ask our students what brought them to Yale SOM, they almost unanimously answer, "the community." Explore the interactive elements of this space to meet my classmates to find out just what makes our community so unique and special.

Shen Courtyard

Here we are in Yale SOM's Courtyard. With speakers and digital screens surrounding the greenery, many school-wide events are held on the lawn. Last Fall, a Welcome BBQ was held here, and the school hosted a Winter-themed Stroll to end the year. Many of these events are open to partners and children, and truly reflects SOM's culture of inclusivity. During April Foolery, which is another SOM and Student Life tradition, student-run events like a month-long Ping Pong tournament or Shabbat Dinner are held in the Courtyard. All are welcome to join, learn, and exchange meaningful moments with one another at Yale SOM.

The Convening Power of Yale

We're standing in Lei Zhang Auditorium, the site of some of Yale's biggest events. The largest venue space in Evans Hall, Zhang hosts global CEOs, Nobel Prize winners, NGO presidents, entrepreneurs, and top government leaders from all across the world—not to mention student- run conferences and case competitions convened in collaboration with Yale graduate and professional students. This is one example of how SOM participates in the intellectual life of the broader university. You'll have opportunities to attend great events right here, and also to go out, explore the Yale campus, take a class in the law school or the environment school, or join a team or a club with members from the other schools.

The Classroom Experience

One of the most distinctive parts of a Yale SOM education is the integrated MBA curriculum. At Yale SOM, you will begin your first year with Orientation to Management - a series of foundational courses that help provide you with the tools and skills necessary to any career in business and management. In Organizational Perspectives courses, you'll learn to rigorously apply those tools and draw on a variety of disciplines to illuminate the perspectives of various stakeholders. The second year of the MBA curriculum is comprised entirely of electives that can be taken in any Yale University classroom, which allows MBA students to customize their curriculum and tap into the resources of a world-renowned institution. And finally, Yale SOM's menu of global studies opportunities is more expansive, and diverse, than any business school in the world. We're in one of the 16 classrooms in Evans Hall, which are designed to allow for a variety of class types and teaching styles - a tiered boardroom style for visiting speakers, and a series of pods perfect for teamwork. Some classrooms, such as this one, can seat an entire cohort of up to 70 students.

Dining Options

While I enjoy cooking my lunch meals, I always appreciate the abundance of food available at Yale SOM. SOM has two food and drink establishments: Charley's Place and McNay's Café. Both are located on the first floor and are open during the day. If I don't have time to pack a lunch or make tea at home, it's a quick 5-minute break to either location! A lot of my classmates usually grab a coffee or tea during our 20-minute break between classes. I'll let you in a little secret: SOM club meetings at lunchtime will usually cater meals to members. I once had a whole week of lunch provided because of my various club and organization participation!

Recruiting and Careers

We're now standing in the five-story Beckenstein Atrium, outside the Career Development Office and a suite of interview and conference rooms that host meetings with visiting recruiters. The Career Development Office, or CDO, facilitates connections between students and employers across industries, functions, and geographies. Consistent with our mission, students at Yale SOM are interested in pursuing impact across all kinds of roles and industries. The CDO is centered on working with students to craft a unique career search that aligns with their values. They are a high-touch office and central to your job-search experience here at SOM, hosting workshops, networking opportunities, and recruiting events. Another key part of the job-search process is our network of alumni. Our alumni are passionate about the school and eager to share advice and insights about their industries by phone or over coffee. Many alumni return to campus to visit classes, host career events, speak at club events and panels, and recruit for their organizations.

Making an Impact

From its founding, Yale SOM has been dedicated to preparing students to make an impact in whatever sector and role they choose—an idea expressed in our mission to educate leaders for business and society. We are standing in the Beinecke Room, named after one of SOM's founding figures, William S. Beinecke. Mr. Beinecke's belief that a Yale business school could train leaders with broadminded intellectual engagement and a deep commitment to service to society continues to motivate our community.

Cohorts and Learning Teams

Learning at Yale SOM is collaborative. When you arrive for the MBA program, for example, you'll be placed into a cohort of about 70 students for core curriculum courses and a small learning team of 5 to 8 students. I'm in the Red cohort and my learning team consists of 7 peers with diverse backgrounds from Fashion to Consulting to Data Analytics. As someone who loves to play soccer, the Cohort Cup was an opportunity to get a little competitive. Bringing it home for the Red Cohort in the finals was a great bonding experience and a true team victory.

We're standing in Ross Library, a popular spot for quiet study; another study spot, the Kenny Reading Room, is suspended right over our heads—and the views are even better from up there. You may have noticed that Ross Library doesn't have shelves full of books—but it does have a librarian who can help you access Yale's vast research tools and materials and business-specific digital resources.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Whether you want to start a company now, start a company later, or you just want to be more entrepreneurial, Yale SOM has you covered. SOM’s approach to entrepreneurship and innovation starts with “the Innovator”, a course in our core curriculum that teaches you how to generate and develop ideas individually and on teams. For the next steps, you’ll turn to our Program on Entrepreneurship. The Program on Entrepreneurship offers advice, mentorship, companionship, working space and other resources to Yale SOM’s budding entrepreneurs and innovators. We have our twenty classes including introductory entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Finance, Venture Capital, and many others. We’re standing in the Honest Tea Entrepreneurship Suite, affectionately known as “the bunker”. It’s the beating heart of the Program on Entrepreneurship and a space for student founders to work, collaborate, or just hang out with each other.

As a student at Yale SOM, you have access to all of Yale. You are encouraged to leverage the resources of a world-renowned institution and enjoy all that Yale has to offer academically, culturally, and socially. Yale is a special university, and beyond SOM there are opportunities to engage with people who are the best in their fields. Many of the greatest minds I've met during my time at Yale have been students at the Yale School of Public Health, Yale Jackson School of Affairs, Yale School of Environment, Yale School of Divinity, and Yale Law School.

New Haven

New Haven is a great place to live, work, and visit. I moved to New Haven with my partner and dog and it's been a blast! Beyond Evans Hall, my partner and I love to explore all the food options available in New Haven, as well as neighboring cities. In addition, we can easily visit New York City and Boston for the weekend. When my partner and I go out at night for drinks and desserts, we will usually bump into our friends and end up enjoying the night with others!
