http://www.stvincent.edu | Under the advisement of Br. Albert Gahr, O.S.B., Ph.D., senior biology major Kyanna Williams-Pate performed a study on zebrafish to better understand development and treatment of sickle cell anemia. The study included the administration of five supplements: iron, folic acid, vitamin B12, viper venom and deferoxamine mesylate, and statistical analysis of their effects, which showed significant change in the folic acid and deferoxamine mesylate groups without significant alteration in growth of the fish, which may in the future assist women who carry the sickle cell trait to prevent development of sickle cell anemia in their children. Saint Vincent College provides an environment in which undergraduate students can perform research under the advisement of experienced and respected faculty members, helping to prepare them for both careers and graduate study.
