In Peru, students visited a weaving community to learn backstrap weaving and natural dye techniques. The community greeted everyone with ceremonial tea and flower necklaces. Students also got a Quechua lesson, led by local guide Jenny. Quechua is the mother tongue of the Andes. Later, the group visited the Ñawpa Ñan community (@nawpanan). They focus on preserving traditional Andean ways of living. They rehearsed traditional music, fed everyone with dishes from the local cuisine, and showed the class some dances. Suni Sonqo Vizcarra Wood, who is a masters student at SAIC, and is a member of this community, invited the group to visit. 🦙 🇵🇪 📸 Ayzha Talley, MA Art Therapy student.

SAIC Casting Club! @saic_casting_club Leaders Jaimie, Martina, and Mazzy and Arden use the lost wax method for small metals casting. Students were able to make bronze jewelry by fabricating their ideas in wax, assembling it on a tree, and investing it. Leaders used a kiln to burn out the wax and casted it using a centrifuge. They used an oxy-acetylene torch to heat up the crucible, which is what holds the metal, and once the metal was melted they take the investment out of the kiln and placed it in the centrifuge. Then they close the centrifuge and let it spin to push the molten metal into the mold.
