LLSC Celebrates 20 Years of Social Justice Impact in Legal Training During the past two decades, every Northeastern law student has participated in Legal Skills in Social Context (or Law, Culture and Difference), our unique first-year social justice signature program that prepares students to use law as a tool for social change. Working with nonprofit, state and community-based organizations, our student teams have performed 400,000 hours of legal research and advocacy to assist a range of underrepresented or marginalized constituencies, including prisoners, students in urban education, the LGBTQ community, women facing equity issues and people living with disabilities. Over the course of 300 projects, our students have assisted in starting restorative justice diversion in Massachusetts, advanced international land and human rights for indigenous people in Costa Rica and migrant farmworkers’ rights, and provided critical research and advocacy for criminal justice reforms. For both our first-year students and upper-level fellows, the challenges of serving an organizational partner in complex social/legal problems solving has transformed their practice skills.
