Grinding up History
Overlooking Saint Vincent Lake, the Gristmill is a visible reminder of the College’s history as a self-sufficient community. Beginning in 1854, the monks brought the grain they grew on the surrounding fields to this mill to grind it into flour they then used to bake their own bread. You can stop by the mini-museum to learn about the mill’s history, buy flour ground at the Gristmill, or relax over a cup of coffee or tea at the Coffeehouse, which was designed by a student and is the site of open mic nights, poetry readings and live music.
