Welcome to the Yale Engineering and Applied Sciences Tour. My name is Marley and I recently graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering. All Yale engineering and computer science majors enroll in Yale College, the university's single undergraduate liberal arts school. But by choosing a major in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, we get the best of both worlds. The Malone Center is home of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. In each of Yale's five Engineering disciplines (Biomedical, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical and Environmental) as well as Computer Science and Applied Physics, teaching labs like those in the Malone Center play a key role in hands-on learning. These small labs facilitate collaboration with peers and mentorship with professors. With approximately 100 professors in the school of engineering and applied sciences and 200 graduates each year, one-on-one attention is the norm, not the exception.

This is the lab of Professor Mark Saltzman, the founding Chair of Yale's Biomedical Engineering Department, and an expert in nanobiotechnology. The research here is focused on tissue engineering, gene therapy, and drug delivery. Professor Saltzman frequently collaborates with physician-researchers at the Yale School of Medicine to develop biomedical solutions that prevent and treat a wide range of diseases and conditions. In addition to leading his lab and teaching popular courses like Frontiers of Biomedical Engineering, Professor Saltzman also recently served as head of one of Yale's residential colleges. Undergraduate engineers are always important contributors on his research teams.

Yale’s Center for Engineering, Innovation, and Design is a 24/7 makerspace that’s open to the entire Yale community. I’ve spent a lot of time in the CEID. Some of my favorite projects have been an electronic string-less bass, a system to support the ankles on Michelangelo’s statue of David, and an efficient combination washer dryer. Peek through the windows on Prospect Street and you'll see engineers putting the finishing touches on their class projects, entrepreneurs testing prototypes, the Yale Bulldogs Racing team fabricating pieces of their hybrid race car, the Yale Undergraduate Aerospace Association tweaking their rockets, and even musicians designing new instruments. With flexible meeting spaces, floor to ceiling whiteboards and a cafe located right next door, the CEID is a magnet for collaboration and creativity.

Yale’s Faboratory is a fabrication laboratory where engineers take inspiration from nature to develop materials that allow robots to adapt to changing tasks and environments. Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Rebecca Kramer-Bottiglio leads a team of graduate and undergraduate researchers who develop soft robots, smart fabrics, and exoskeletons that can change their shape.

The Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale (or Tsai CITY) is at the heart of Yale’s Innovation Corridor, an integrated set of spaces designed to bring together students, faculty, and staff to share diverse perspectives and inspire their ingenuity. Tsai CITY offers a wide range of programs — from drop-in sessions to multi-week programs — that assist students at every stage of their innovation and entrepreneurship process. The Tsai CITY Summer Fellowship incubates new companies, nonprofits, and initiatives with $15,000 in seed funding plus intensive workshops, coaching, and pitch opportunities. Recently, Yale Graduate April Koh became the youngest American CEO of a private startup company valued at over $1 billion. As an undergraduate, Koh developed the concept for an AI-assisted telehealth program for mental health. Some of her company’s earliest funding came from Yale’s $25,000 Thorne Prize for Social Innovation.

Many undergraduate engineering courses meet in the Greenberg Engineering Teaching Concourse, located directly below the CEID and Tsai CITY. The corridor includes six undergraduate teaching labs and two wet labs that bring together all of Yale’s engineering disciplines in a shared space designed to foster collaboration and innovation across disciplines. The corridor links the Becton Center for Engineering with Arthur K. Watson Hall, which houses Yale’s department of computer science. The labs feature state-of-the art equipment with collapsible walls that allow labs to triple in size.

In the social robotics lab, directed by Professor of Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering Brian Scassellati, researchers build human-like robots to investigate models of human development. Many of the lab's projects focus on how children develop social skills. One group is developing a robotic system that can aid in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, and another robot teaches social skills to children with autism. Students and professors in the computer science department collaborate across the university for interdisciplinary study. You'll find computer scientists collaborating with mathematicians, engineers, economists, physicists, psychologists, musicians and more.

The Yale Quantum Institute is an interdisciplinary center that brings together electrical engineers, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and artists to further our understanding of the quantum world. The institute is a leader in the development of quantum bits for quantum computing. They were the first group to develop a "quantum bus" for storing information, and the first quantum algorithms and quantum error correction with integrated circuits. Recently, YQI researchers and an artist-in-residence used their quantum computer prototypes to make the first music generated by quantum signals.
