Bronco Athletics

Game days with friends at Waldo Stadium, watching the Bronco Marching Band and cheering on the team are exciting events that create some of the best college memories. Bronco athletics have a proud heritage of unifying and energizing campus while making a connection with the Kalamazoo community. Western has 16 NCAA Division I sports teams for men and women, and competes in the Mid-American Conference and National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Broncos and fans unite at Waldo Stadium, Lawson Arena and Read Fieldhouse to share their school spirit and love of the game. Here's something else to cheer for: students can attend nearly all on-campus sporting events free of charge.

Arcadia Flats

Western offers you on-campus housing that evolves with your college journey. Arcadia Flats, our newest housing option, provides great quality of life for upper-level students by pairing sustainable, contemporary design with convenient campus living. The new apartment-style units and common spaces are designed to meet the changing lifestyle needs of students. You can choose from five apartment types, enjoy lounges for studying and socializing, fireplaces and a fitness room. Arcadia Flats is located near our campus hub, the new student center. Waldo Library and the Student Rec Center are also nearby. The surrounding area is being transformed to add stunning new open spaces that the whole Bronco community can enjoy.

Western Heights

Where you live plays a big part in your experience here. Most first-year students choose the convenience of living in one of our on-campus housing options. Western Heights is our first-year-focused residence hall complex—the first of its kind in Michigan. It's designed to help every resident build friendships and find a place to belong, which improves your ability to learn. Floors are arranged into houses of 30-35 students, each with a kitchen, study area and centrally located private bathrooms maintained by staff. Residents share laundry and study areas, an open-air terrace, and entertainment and game rooms. As with all new campus buildings, Western Heights was built with sustainability in mind.

Student Recreation Center

As a Bronco, you'll have unlimited use of our Student Recreation Center and other resources to help you stay healthy and active. This facility covers nearly a quarter million square feet—lots of room for you to try new activities. Highlights include a 45-foot climbing wall, F45 training studio, swimming pool, running track, eight basketball courts and the latest weight training and exercise equipment. Grab a buddy for fun fitness classes like yoga, Cycle Fit, Zumba, Pilates or kickboxing. And eighteen classes are free to students living in residence halls. If you're more of a team player, you can choose from three levels of sports, including varsity, club and intramural.

Valley Neighborhood

Students living in the Valley residence halls enjoy peaceful wooded surroundings right next to the Valley Dining Center, offering a wide variety of food options, and Goldsworth Valley Pond, a popular spot to study and relax with friends. The Valleys are a vibrant mix of first-year and upper-level students. All floors are co-ed, and each single-gender suite contains two rooms connected by a shared bathroom. The Valleys are home to several learning communities, so you can live on a floor with Broncos who already share similar interests or majors. It's easy to find a study group, meet new people and enjoy a more complete college experience.

Valley Dining Center

All of our campus dining centers make excellent spots to connect and recharge with friends. The Valley Dining Center includes several different micro-restaurants that offer an impressive variety of healthy, flavorful on-trend options. For example, Blazin' Bronco has a traditional grill menu with a wings bar, while Cilantro's features Latin American tastes with fresh-baked tortillas, burritos and wraps. You can find plenty of delicious choices to match nearly any craving or nutritional requirements. My Pantry is our allergen-free zone designed for students with food allergies or individual dietary needs. And if you're looking for a job on campus, Dining Services offers flexible schedules and convenient locations for student workers.

Esports Arena

WMU's Esports Arena is dedicated to healthy competitive play. It's one of the only facilities in Michigan that can host tournaments, practice and professional production. This is home turf for Bronco esports matches against universities from across the Midwest, in games like League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League and more. Western esports teams are registered student club sports organizations, so any student can try out. The space also accommodates players from around the Kalamazoo area, making it a great place to meet locals who share a love of esports. The facility is equipped with 36 state-of-the-art gaming PCs set in a 190-seat auditorium with overhead screens for spectators.

Kalamazoo Community

We’re standing in Asylum Lake Preserve. The area around Kalamazoo is a four-season playground. From Lake Michigan beaches to frisbee golf courses, biking and hiking trails to downhill and cross-country skiing, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Surrounded by so much nature, it's easy to see why WMU prioritizes sustainability. Our campus is situated in the sweet spot between Chicago, Detroit and Grand Rapids. The city of Kalamazoo is home to three colleges, a diverse community, and a vibrant downtown that includes foodie havens, shopping, live music, theater and dancing. You'll also have opportunities for resume-worthy experiences through internships and off-campus jobs with nationally known businesses.

College of Education and Human Development

One of the latest upgrades to campus, Sangren Hall, is home to the College of Education and Human Development. Inside, dozens of classrooms, a large research center and experienced, knowledgeable faculty are dedicated to preparing students for a broad range of careers that include teaching, nutrition and dietetics, counseling, fashion merchandising and sports management. Students who take classes in Sangren Hall benefit from several technological advantages. One example is GoReact, software used for teacher education, which uses remote supervision and video analysis to give students better feedback of their classroom performance, so they can gain skills faster.

Lee Honors College

Students choose WMU's Lee Honors College for a deeper level of learning from faculty, mentored research and distinctive learning experiences. It's one of the oldest honors colleges in the country and home to more than 2,000 high-achieving students. Honors college members have access to programs of study from every one of Western's seven academic colleges. They enjoy benefits like priority course registration and small class sizes, and have opportunities to take part in unique and exclusive educational opportunities like Study in the States, where students can travel across the U.S. to broaden their perspectives and learn through unique first-hand experiences.

College of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences offers a high-quality liberal arts education in programs like social sciences, natural sciences and the humanities. Faculty members rank among the nation's finest scholars and researchers. Most also do significant research, so they're not just teaching from textbooks—they're actually writing them. You can conduct mentored research here as an undergraduate—a rare opportunity. For example, our Chemistry Building classrooms and laboratories host the study of fields like physical and organic chemistry. Other benefits include research workspaces equipped for advanced biochemistry, quantitative analysis and chemistry for health professionals. We're improving Dunbar Hall with active learning classrooms, a state-of-the-art media center, new dance studio and sustainability features.

Fine Arts Corridor

Miller Plaza and the open space around the fountain is one of the most popular areas on campus for students. It's also where you'll find WMU's College of Fine Arts. It includes our Department of Dance, School of Music, Department of Theatre and The Frostic School of Art. As a performing or visual arts student, you can learn to master your craft in modern performance halls, professional studios, exhibition spaces, labs and classrooms. Students from the college perform in an amazing 1,000 shows every year. The plaza also faces Miller Auditorium, the premier performing arts venue in Southwest Michigan, featuring touring Broadway productions, concerts and other world-class entertainment.

College of Health and Human Services

The College of Health and Human Services programs are offered within modern facilities representing the best of technology and humanitarianism. Teaching labs here mirror today's clinical environments and give you opportunities to work with patient simulations and the latest medical education technology, including cutting-edge interactive 3D anatomy imaging. Students from different disciplines routinely collaborate in learning activities to prepare for working in interprofessional teams, as is common in today's healthcare workplace. Our Unified Clinics and Center for Disability Services right here on our campus offer students unmatched clinical learning. The community is served by clinical care while students practice with guidance from expert faculty practitioners.

College of Engineering and Applied Sciences

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences is on Western's Parkview Campus. Students and faculty work together here to advance the frontiers of knowledge. The high-tech facility hosts seven computer teaching labs, 75 cutting-edge research and teaching laboratories, and several flexible classrooms and lecture spaces. Every program in the college is accredited, from undergraduate to doctoral level. Western shares the Parkview Campus with Business Technology Research (BTR) Park. The park is home to more than 40 private sector companies such as Newell Brands, Tekna and SME. A new phase, BTR North, will expand the University's regional business and community partnerships to increase opportunities for students, research and economic development.

College of Aviation

Located in a brand new building, the WMU College of Aviation offers the only comprehensive aviation program at a public university in Michigan. With more than 1,100 undergraduate students, it's also one of the largest aviation programs in the country. Our excellent industry reputation has earned us partnerships and career path programs with major airlines American, Delta and United. The college is a pivotal force in the future of aviation training and management and home to the Midwest's largest flight school, with a fleet of 28 Cirrus SR-20s and 10 twin-engine Piper Seminoles. Our newly expanded and updated facility is located at the WK Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek.

Haworth College of Business

Schneider Hall is home to the Haworth College of Business. As a business student, you'll be able to strengthen your résumé with experiential learning opportunities through the Zhang Career Center, the Greenleaf Trust stock trading room and the Sanford Center for Financial Planning and Wellness. You can start crafting your career by choosing from several specialized programs to match your interests, including Food and Consumer Package Goods Marketing, Entrepreneurship and our top-ranked Integrated Supply Management program. Haworth is also among a select group of fewer than 5 percent of business schools worldwide that are accredited at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Swain Library in Sangren Hall is a perfect spot for quiet and group study and exploring WMU’s peer mentoring, community engagement and global education programs. Swain is part of Western Michigan University Libraries and supports student learning and collaboration. This is one of many spaces on campus that Merze Tate College utilizes. As an exploratory student, you'll benefit from an alliance of services, units and departments that exist to help empower every student to reach their highest potential and provide them with ways to seize success, thrive in all dimensions of their well-being, and lay the foundation for a prosperous future.

Waldo Library

If the Student Center is the heart of campus, Waldo Library is the brain. Here you have access to endless resource materials and expert staff to help you find just what you need. You can find comfortable spaces to do research, study or collaborate with classmates. You can also learn and explore in the VR labs or in the makerspace with our 3D printers. The University Libraries strives to be a place that welcomes everyone. Undergraduate and graduate students can also find part-time employment with University Libraries year-round at three locations.
