Wren Building

Welcome to William & Mary! There is no better place to start our tour than at the extraor dinary Sir Christopher Wren Building. This historic site serves as a welcoming gateway to our university and the backdrop for many of W&M's most beloved traditions. Imagine studying in the oldest academic building still in use in the U.S., where generations of leaders have convened to forge innovative solutions and advance ideals that changed the future. From Opening Convocation to the mid-year Yule Log ceremony to the ringing of the Wren Bell by graduating students, this building brings our community together throughout the year to celebrate our shared love for this remarkable place.

Sunken Garden

The Sunken Garden is William & Mary's quad — and a favorite gathering spot in the heart of campus. On any given day, this expansive grass lawn is bustling with activity. Just steps away from the Wren and lined on its longest sides by six academic buildings, this open area is the perfect place to relax in the sun between classes or play a spirited game of football or frisbee. Based on the design for the Chelsea Gardens in London, the Sunken Garden is also host to many other activities throughout the year including bubble soccer, campus golf, outdoor movies, dances and a variety of fun festivals and ceremonies.

Residential Life

Where you live is a huge part of your university experience. Here, your housing comes with options, including several distinctive residence halls and living learning communities to call home. Be sure to check out our language houses, fraternity and sorority housing, Africana house and other special interest accommodations. Three-quarters of undergraduates, including all freshmen and sophomores, live on campus. An upperclassman favorite is Hardy Hall where residents enjoy several reading rooms and lounges, a game room, a laundry facility and two soundproof practice rooms with pianos. With close proximity to everything on campus, all our residence halls offer secure and comfortable accommodations to live, study and hang out with friends.

Sadler Center

Gather, socialize, study, eat — it all happens here. The Sadler Center is William & Mary's student union, a hub for campus life. Grab lunch, pick up essentials from the campus convenience store or learn more about our nearly 500 clubs and organizations focused on community service, sports, student government, social events and more. You can also shoot some pool, catch a Homebrew student performance or see a movie in the Commonwealth Auditorium. Then, step outside to Sadler Terrace to grab an outdoor table with friends and lounge on the terraced lawn. Centrally located on campus, the Sadler Center is where your personal interests and extracurricular opportunities meet.

Integrated Science Center

The Integrated Science Center, or ISC, offers 500,000 square feet of STEM facilities that provide the perfect place to cultivate your curiosity and explore cross-disciplinary collaboration. State-of-the-art classroom and lab spaces welcome future biologists, chemists, neuroscientists, mathematicians, psychologists, data scientists and applied scientists under one roof. Almost 80% of undergraduate students get involved in faculty-mentored research, with 20% having their work published before they graduate. Nationally recognized faculty will teach you cutting-edge clinical techniques as part of an integrated course curriculum in a hands-on environment designed to prepare you for your future.

To be a W&M student is to think critically and express yourself creatively, to question and to innovate. From small seminar rooms and modern modular studios to large lecture halls and fully equipped labs, there are dozens of learning environments available. In addition to Arts & Sciences, our university also includes the Mason School of Business, School of Education, W&M Law School and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. With a small student to faculty ratio of 12:1, W&M has a well-earned reputation for delivering a highly personalized education.

Swem Library

One of the university's most innovative and beloved spaces is Swem Library. Cherished for decades as the cornerstone of our thriving university community, the library's unwavering focus on linking people with ideas continues to evolve here in engaging and digital ways. Loaded with traditional study rooms and quiet nooks, Swem also features dynamic and interactive spaces like the Makerspace, equipped with state-of-the-art 3D printers and scanners, and the Reeder Media Center, with sound-proof studios and equipment for filmmakers, musicians and other artists. Also within the library, the Writing Resources Center and the TutorZone provide academic assistance and the Special Collections Research Center documents the university's centuries-old history.

International Studies & Research

Real, authentic, out-of-the-box thinking comes from exposure to different cultures and experiences. With over 600 international students from over 60 countries, W&M will immerse you in a multitude of cultural perspectives including research opportunities, professional internships, study abroad and more. The Reves Center for International Studies is home to the Office of International Students, Scholars & Programs and the Global Education Office, which for years has boasted the highest study abroad participation of any public university. If you're interested in international research, W&M's Global Research Institute supports innovative student-faculty research collaborations to address pressing global issues ranging from world health and human rights to power and diplomacy and geospatial analysis.

Opportunities for an active and healthy lifestyle at William & Mary abound. The McLeod Tyler Wellness Center embodies the university's commitment to flourishing: mind, body and spirit alike. From mindfulness workshops and yoga sessions to acupuncture services and fitness classes, the center maintains a full spectrum of facilities and programs including the Counseling Center and Student Health Center. Visitors often relax next to the first-floor water wall or find a quiet medication alcove. Outside, you can enjoy the meditation labyrinth, life-size Zen garden and social wellness patio. Recreation Center

From boxing and spin classes to weight-training and cardio equipment, the Bee McLeod Recreation Center has everything you need for fitness and fun. This is the ideal place to participate in all your favorite recreational activities and explore new interests. Shoot hoops, climb the indoor rock wall or swim laps in the eight-lane pool. An expansive free weights area and dozens of stationary bikes, treadmills and ellipticals offer a wealth of strength and conditioning opportunities. You can also meet friends to play squash or racquetball or simply relax in the sauna. Through our Tribe Adventure Program and equipment rental center, you can gear-up and participate in outdoor trips and activities.

Lake Matoaka & Amphitheatre

Wooded groves, perennial gardens and vast green spaces are signature attributes of the William & Mary campus. Yet few outdoor spaces are as treasured as Lake Matoaka with its wealth of recreational opportunities. Along the shore is the Martha Wren Briggs Amphitheatre at Lake Matoaka, a large, outdoor venue that hosts many fair-weather music events and other programming throughout the year. A short distance away is the Matoaka Boathouse and dock, a lake zipline and the 10+ mile network of trails in the College Woods. The greater Williamsburg area also features several river beaches and multi-use trails within a 15-minute driving radius.

Entrepreneurship Hub

To inspire and train the next generation of innovative leaders, the W&M Entrepreneurship Hub at Tribe Square provides entrepreneurial thinkers in all disciplines across the university and in greater Williamsburg a place and programs to come together to learn, engage, and build. Centrally located, The Hub offers programming and resources for a full spectrum of entrepreneurial interests - serving those who are "just curious" to those who are scaling funded ventures. Here, you will learn to identify new opportunities, embrace risk, and successfully navigate ambiguity. The space is also used to host a variety of events and supports for-credit courses in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Perched on the southwestern edge of campus, the business school's stunning Alan B. Unique Campus Places

With over 325 years of history, William & Mary's lively campus offers a wealth of special places and hidden gems. An iconic favorite is the Crim Dell bridge, built over a small pond in a beautiful wooded ravine. Another perfectly located hangout is the Daily Grind café. Its cozy interior makes it a great place to meet friends for coffee or a bite to eat. The café also hosts open mic nights, trivia and the occasional live music performance. Other must-see places include the campus rock garden, the greenhouse atop the Integrated Science Center and Small Hall as well as a few secret spots you'll need to discover for yourself.

Arts Quarter

Slated to open in 2023, the Arts Quarter will set the stage for an incredible future for the arts at William & Mary. The heart of this 180,000-square-foot project features a modernized and expanded Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall and a new music building which will include six high-quality performance venues with 1,500 audience seats. The Arts Quarter project also includes an extensive expansion to the Muscarelle Museum of Art. The museum's collection numbers nearly 6,000 items, including works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Georgia O'Keeffe. These exciting expansions will position the university as a state-of-the-art regional venue for world-class performances, exhibitions and robust academic programs.

Williamsburg Area

Across the street from campus, Merchants Square is a delightful pedestrian mall lined with dozens of boutiques, restaurants, coffeeshops and more. In addition to the weekly farmer's market and monthly 2nd Sundays Art & Music Festival, the area hosts a variety of concerts, outdoor movies and other events throughout the year. Perhaps best known for Colonial Williamsburg, this lively town is also home to Busch Gardens, Water Country USA and Jamestown Settlement. Just an hour to the east, you can take a dip at the Virginia Beach oceanfront or drive an hour west to explore downtown Richmond's historic charm.

Washington Center

Located downtown in Mount Vernon Triangle, the Washington Center is William & Mary's "Campus in the City," offering experiential learning experiences in Washington, D.C. Fondly referred to by students as a "domestic study abroad program," the center serves as home base for semester, summer and winter break programs that take advantage of the city's breadth of resources. Each year, hundreds of students enroll in Study in D.C., a high-impact internship opportunity that exposes W&M students to the dynamic governmental, business, cultural, non-profit and social institutions of the region, help integrate students into the vibrant alumni network and allow them to begin exploring their career paths after graduation.
