Welcome to Winthrop University! We're a comprehensive public university offering Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Rock Hill, South Carolina, just 20 minutes south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Our historic and diverse campus community make Winthrop a very special place to live and learn. In front of you is Byrnes Auditorium - a massive 3,600-seat space where many campus and community events are held throughout the year. On the opposite end of the building is Barnes Recital Hall. Passersby can often hear music drifting from the windows as you walk by while practice and rehearsals take place inside.

Winthrop Eagle

Winthrop's eagle statue has been a prominent landmark at the front of campus since 2006. A gift to Winthrop from Charlotte businessman and philanthropist Irwin Belk, the statue was created by noted North Carolina sculptor Jon Hair over an 18-month period. The 12-foot-tall, 3,000-pound bronze eagle sits on a nearly 20-foot-tall pedestal and was inspired by Winthrop's mascot and athletic logo.

Joynes Hall is home to Winthrop's Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Our counselors are available to meet with visitors and help prospective students through the admissions process. Phelps Hall and Lee Wicker Hall are two of our residence halls, located at the front of campus. Both halls are co-ed and house predominantly upperclassmen. They feature suite-style rooms and are both in close proximity to one of our main dining centers on campus, Eagle Eatery. There are many advantages to living on-campus at Winthrop - the convenience of living close to classes and campus resources, support from live-in staff, and opportunities to make lifelong friendships and participate in exciting activities. Studies even show that students who live on campus are more satisfied with their college experience, earn higher grade point averages and are more likely to graduate.

Carroll Hall, along with neighboring Thurmond Hall, is the center of activity for the College of Business. One of the newest buildings on campus, Carroll features the Capital Markets Training and Trading Center, a facility that connects students to global markets through interactive technology. This space is equipped with a stock ticker that runs around the perimeter, world clocks, and a nine-screen data wall, for cable news feeds and Bloomberg, Telemet, and Morningstar data to use in real world trading simulations. Our bachelor's and master's degree business programs are accredited by AACSB-International, a designation held by less than 5 percent of the world's business schools.

Thomson Hall

Thomson is a four-story co-ed residence hall that houses predominantly upperclassmen, and is one of three suite-style dorms on campus. The building is divided into two wings separated by one of Winthrop's main dining centers - Eagle Eatery. You'll find a wide variety of dining options here, including a salad bar, deli area, pizza and pasta bar, hot breakfast line, dessert station and more! Dining in Eagle Eatery offers 3 meals a day and is all-you-can-eat, so don't be afraid to go back for seconds...or thirds! Inside, you'll also find the Eagle Express, our on-campus convenience store that's open until at least midnight most nights.

Dalton Hall is one of two buildings that house Winthrop's science classes. Dalton provides facilities for the departments of biology and human nutrition, including a computer lab, aquarium and herbarium rooms, 11 teaching laboratories and a suite for electron and optical microscopes. In addition to these state-of-the-art facililities, the biology department also utilizes Winthrop's 325-acre research area with a large undisturbed wooded area and a 20-acre lake for class studies and field trips.

Sims Science Building

Next door to Dalton Hall, you will find Sims Science Building, which is home to the departments of chemistry, physics and geology. Our program provides professional certification in chemistry and has American Chemical Society approval, which is considered by many to be the gold standard for science education. From their freshmen year, students have the opportunity to use these facilities and participate in research alongside Winthrop's esteemed faculty. The advanced knowledge and research experience they get makes them highly competitive for scholarships, graduate and professional programs and employment opportunities. And it's not just in science-related fields - undergraduate research encompasses all majors and fields of study.

College of Arts & Sciences (Kinard Hall)

Nearly all Winthrop students will have a class in Kinard at some point in their time here. It's the home base for the College of Arts & Sciences and a wide variety of courses are taught within its walls. For students whose academic interests reach across or beyond our current major offerings, Winthrop offers a degree in Individualized Studies, where students design a program of study tailored to their own needs and interests, not defined by a single discipline. Kinard is also home to our nationally-recognized graduate degree program in School Psychology. Students come from all over the country to earn their Master's or Specialist degrees in this field at Winthrop.

Scholars Walk/Campus Green

Here we are on Scholars Walk in the heart of campus. It's kind of like Winthrop's Main Street. On any given day, you'll find students hanging out, playing cornhole or checking out student organization information tables that are often set up along the walkway. Scholars Walk is paved with bricks - many engraved with the names of alumni and other university supporters, commemorating their love for Winthrop. Here you will also find Crawford Building, where you can find Health & Counseling Services, as well as our Center for Career and Civic Engagement. Adjacent to Scholars Walk is what we call Campus Green - a huge open space where students can hang out, play games or enjoy the many events that are held here.

Owens Hall

One of the best things about Winthrop's campus is the seamless blend of old and new architecture. Owens Hall is one of our newer buildings, and each of the classrooms inside are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The computer lab and student lounge are perfect for studying or working on projects. The two larger rooms on the ground floor are often used for guest lectures and presentations. Many of our graduate degree courses are held here - music, social work, education, English, science, history - just to name a few. So no matter what your area of study, chances are you will spend some time in Owens.

DiGiorgio Campus Center

The DiGiorgio Campus Center, nicknamed "DIGS," is the heart of student life on campus. On the ground floor, you'll find the post office and Markley's food court, which includes options like Chick-fil-a, Einstein Bagels, sushi, burgers, salads and more. Upstairs on the main floor, you can play video games, ping pong or pool, visit the Bookstore or grab a cup of coffee at Starbucks. You can even catch a movie in Dina's Place, our cinema-style theatre. DIGS is where many of our 200 clubs and organizations meet, including our 19 greek organizations and the student programming team, DSU, that plans fantastic on-campus entertainment for students throughout the year.

The Courtyard

The Courtyard at Winthrop is an apartment-style residence hall that features fully furnished suites and private bedrooms. It houses 400 predominantly upperclassmen, athletes and honors students. One unique thing about our residence halls is that we have Academic Success Communities, where we house students on a residential themed floor with others that have similar academic and personal interests. Specific programs are designed around a floor's theme and are presented by residence life staff, faculty or even students themselves. This allows students to get more interaction with faculty and build closer relationships with their hallmates.

Winthrop's largest building is the 137,000-square-foot Lois Rhame West Center. In addition to housing academic space for Winthrop's health, physical education, and sport management programs, the building is the home for our campus wellness facilities, to which all students have free access. The West Center boasts state-of-the-art equipment and spaces including a two-story climbing wall, four full-sized basketball courts, an elevated running track, an 8,000-square-foot weight room, a 25-yard swimming pool, and four racquetball courts. Daily group fitness classes, personal training and equipment rentals are all available to students as well.

Named for our founding president David Bancroft Johnson, Johnson Hall houses the Department of Theatre and Dance. Our students perform in, design, direct, choreograph, and manage several stage shows throughout the year in Johnson Theatre and the Studio Theatre. Winthrop is one of only a few universities in the country to have all five undergraduate and graduate arts programs - theatre, dance, music, fine arts and interior design - nationally accredited, and the only one in South Carolina. Johnson is also home to the Department of Mass Communication, and is where you can find WINR, our on-campus radio station, and the studios for Winthrop Close-Up, our student-produced television news program.

Rutledge Building/McLaurin Hall

Winthrop has a vibrant visual arts program, and this is the center of its activity. Rutledge Building features studio arts classrooms as well as the CreatorSpace, an arts lab equipped with state-of-the-art technology for students and faculty to collaborate and create. Rutledge also houses two art galleries - Rutledge Gallery and the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery - which feature rotating exhibitions by students and visiting artists. Next door, McLaurin features the Lewandowski Gallery, as well as faculty and student studios and College of Visual and Performing Arts offices. Behind these two buildings is Hardin Garden, just one of the many spots around campus featuring student art installations.

Here you'll find many of our administrative offices - including the President, Cashier, Records & Registration, Student Financial Services, Alumni Relations and our Graduate School. We offer over 40 graduate degree programs - including MBA, Master of Social Work, and Dietetics and nationally-accredited programs in education, science and the arts. The bell in the clock tower chimes on the hour, and at 11am every day, it plays our Alma Mater. You can often find students spending time here on the front lawn around the large fountain and magnolia tree, which is lit up for the holidays each year as a part of Rock Hill's Christmasville festival.

Margaret Nance Hall

Established in 1895, Margaret Nance offers a classic first-year college residential experience for students. It is one of our traditional-style residence halls on campus, and has three cozy fireplace lounges and a parlor, perfect for studying or relaxing with friends. It's location in the middle of campus makes getting to class or dining locations extremely convenient, and it contains interior hallways that connect it to several classroom buildings, which comes in handy on rainy days.

Dinkins Hall houses University College and its many resources for students - including the Academic Success Center, International Center, and the Honors Program. All of these services are designed to provide every Winthrop student support and a common academic foundation. Dinkins is also the home base for The Winthrop Poll - a nationally respected survey, administered through our Center for Public Opinion & Policy Research, that regularly reports on the public policy attitudes and opinions of South Carolinians and the entire southern region, and is used by policy makers to inform their decisions.

Dacus Library

Dacus Library, named for Ida Jane Dacus, the school's first librarian and the first South Carolinian to receive professional training in library studies, is a wealth of information and resources for students. It offers students access to PCs, Macs, laptops, printers and scanning stations as well as group and private study rooms. They also provide access to many of their resources online so that they can be accessed from anywhere on campus from your computer in your dorm room or even on your smartphone.

Withers is home to the Richard W. Riley College of Education, which includes athletic training, exercise science, family and consumer science, sports management and teacher education. Winthrop was founded as a teaching school, and education is still one of our biggest areas of study today. All of our teacher education students complete practical internships in our area schools, giving them the hands-on classroom experience they need when they begin their teaching career. Early childhood education majors and graduate education students get experience working with the on-site Macfeat Laboratory School, the oldest running laboratory school in the country.

Welcome to Winthrop Coliseum, home of the Eagles. The Coliseum is located at our Recreational & Research Complex, just a mile from campus. This is where many of our athletes from our 18 NCAA Division I teams train and where you'll come to cheer on your Eagles at home games. Students get in free to all of our sporting events, and games are always a lot of fun! We compete in the Big South Conference and our basketball team has made several appearances in the NCAA tournament over the years. Take a look around, because this is also where you will be walking across the stage at graduation!

This is where you'll find many of our sports complexes - Winthrop Ballpark, the Tennis and Softball Complexes, our Track and Soccer fields, and Golf Course. There's also a ropes course and an 18-hole disc golf course, used for national and international tournaments. Out here, you will also find Winthrop Lake, a popular spot for students to soak up the sun, study and have fun. Our Biology Department also uses the area around the lake and the woods for research opportunities.

Winthrop is located in the Old Town/Knowledge Park district of Rock Hill a booming area of the city full of local charm. Rock Hill has everything you need, with tons of shopping, restaurants, outdoor recreation, and festivals and events year-round. All just 20 minutes from one of the largest cities in the country Charlotte, North Carolina where you'll find world-class dining, shopping and entertainment, professional sports teams like the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets, as well as a plethora of Fortune 500 companies.
