VU Amsterdam students often describe the Initium as the 'gateway' to the campus. The building accommodates the Faculty of Law, with four Bachelor degree programs and an extensive range of Master programs. Academic education provided by the faculty is linked to current societal themes. The education is based on the awareness that our society needs academically trained legal experts, who combine their knowledge with a deep sense of engagement with our society.

Medical Faculty & Faculty of Behavioural and Human Movement Sciences

The Medical Faculty accommodates all medical, behavioral, human movement and health science activities, as well as all related student and study associations. The Medical Faculty hosts the Human Performance Lab, a unique research facility with a climate chamber. Here, under extreme conditions - such as low oxygen levels and high temperatures - research about human performance is conducted. Medical students can also practice their skills in a dissection studio.

O|2 Lab Building

The O2 building is one of the first academic buildings in the Netherlands to be developed for research in Human Health and Life Sciences. Here, scientists from VU Amsterdam and Amsterdam UMC tackle social issues related to fundamental and applied medical research that will benefit current and future generations. The building was constructed to the highest sustainability standard. It is cooled with water from a nearby lake, and the green roof absorbs water, providing an insulating effect. On the ground floor, the building has a Science Cafe where students and researchers meet up for coffee.

University Library

The University Library is the place to go to borrow books, read scientific articles and access academic papers. It’s also a quiet and pleasant environment with over 1,200 spots to study comfortably. There are computer rooms, rooms for independent study, as well as rooms for group work. On the 2nd floor you can unwind on a couch in a homely space, while getting inspired by art and books. Here, students and researchers get the opportunity to transform their ideas into tangible products and services. The lab offers support throughout the entire process, from idea to market. Amsterdam has a lively startup scene. Promising business plans can be adopted by the Amsterdam Venture Studios or other incubator programs. The Demonstrator Lab offers a no-strings- attached possibility to develop your entrepreneurial skills in a risk-free, failure-friendly, hands-on environment.

Amsterdam Forest, Bosbaan

Within a short bike-ride or walk from the VU you reach the Amsterdamse Bos. This forest is 3-times larger than New York Central Park and offers many opportunities to relax. Amsterdamse Bos is internationally known for its races on the Bosbaan. Student rowing associations train here to get ready for competitions. You can go to the forest for a swim, canoe trip or barbecue with your friends. Other places for leisure are the pancake house, an open-air theater and a wellness resort.

Uilenstede, Campus Square

During your studies, you want to live comfortably, to get the most out of your experience. From Uilenstede Campus it takes 10 minutes by bike or public transport to get to VU Amsterdam. In front of our brand new sports center, there are large green spaces where students play sports and eat together in summer.

At Campus Uilenstede rooms start for around 400 euros a month. Other housing options are The Student Hotel, Hotel Jansen and Ravel Residence, which also offer independent studios. The university has a special team that is dedicated to help international students find good housing. Whatever you choose; all housing offers great facilities to be able to relax after a busy day of studying.

Museum Square

Within 15 minutes of the university you will find yourself in the bustling center of Amsterdam. The Museumplein is the cultural heart of the city. The square owes its name to the famous museums that surround it. Go visit the Rijksmuseum to admire Rembrandt’s The Night Watch in real life, visit the Van Gogh Museum or even the Stedelijk Museum for modern art. The Royal Concert Hall is also located here. In summer there are many events and you can picnic on the hill. In winter you can ice skate and you will find yourself in winter wonderland. It’s common in the Netherlands to do as much as possible by bike, so we suggest you jump on your bike and discover the city for yourself!
