Welcome to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. The only veterinary school in New England, we are located on a 600-acre campus in Grafton, Massachusetts, with veterinary clinics in Worcester, Massachusetts and Woodstock, Connecticut. With 2,000+ alumni worldwide and a commitment to One Health, we've been contributing to the advancement of veterinary medicine, animal and human health, and research for nearly 50 years. Our seven teaching hospitals and clinics care for 100,000+ animals annually. Our campus experience encourages a culture of community with student, staff, and faculty involvement through a variety of organizations, programs, and resources. Students have access to career development, financial aid, health services, and activities through SAVMA, our chapter of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association. Faculty and staff can take advantage of university resources including employee assistance, mentoring, and professional development. Cummings School encourages employees to support each other through a number of initiatives and team building activities. All community members are invited and encouraged to participate in a variety of wellbeing initiatives throughout the year.

Our comprehensive Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program allows students to explore a full range of career pathways, including research, industry, international veterinary medicine, public health, and animal welfare, ethics and policy. Dual degree programs are also offered. Students are part of care teams in our teaching hospitals, where large caseloads provide excellent learning opportunities in primary care, herd health, and advanced specialty care for companion animals, wildlife, small ruminants, and horses. Master of science programs in animals and public policy, conservation medicine, and infectious disease and global health, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences are also offered.

Clinical skills are at the heart of our curriculum with a hands-on approach that enhances learning. In the first three years, students develop animal handling, suture, and diagnostic imaging skills. They build surgical skills and confidence in the simulation labs, and perform their first spays and neuters as surgeon and anesthesiologist during the third year. In their fourth year, they assist with patient intake as well as diagnostic and surgical procedures, while learning to assume responsibility for treatment and client management. During the annual animal dentistry week, veterinary clinicians, and technicians, including alums, from various practices and hospitals teach students about dental care.

Established in 1985, the flagship Foster Hospital for Small Animals sets the standard in interventional cardiology, orthopedic and neurosurgery, nephrology, emergency and critical care, and internal medicine specialty care for small animals. Including our community clinics, the combined caseload of 60,000 patients is one of the largest academic hospital caseloads in North America. By providing extraordinary care and engaging in leading research and innovation, we offer an outstanding environment for veterinary education, specialty training, and scholarship to advance the profession. In addition to DVM students, we train approximately 100 interns and residents each year. Our referral specialty and emergency services are in high demand from across the northeast region.

Opened in 1982, the Hospital for Large Animals provides specialty internal medicine, surgery, advanced diagnostic imaging, and neonatal intensive care, amongst other specialties for horses and farm animals. Our Equine Sports Medicine Program provides advanced care for equine performance horses. Tufts Veterinary Field Service in Woodstock, Connecticut, cares for over 50,000 equine, bovine, and small ruminants, promoting herd health, reproductive care, and livestock medicine. Cummings School's own campus farm covers over 200 acres and is home to beef cattle, dairy heifers, and sheep. Our expert faculty provide not only exceptional care, but provide cutting edge research ranging from pulmonary research to orthopedic surgery to advance reproductive technologies.

Established in 1983, Tufts Wildlife Clinic provides students with in-depth training in wildlife and conservation medicine, sustainability, and climate justice. With 3,500+ patient admissions each year, we have an international reputation for excellence in wildlife medicine, research, and rehabilitation. Our faculty conduct cutting-edge research in conservation medicine, infectious disease, and other topics concerning wildlife, people, and the environment. The clinic works closely with regional zoos, wildlife organizations, and government agencies to protect and care for wildlife. Our Master of Science in Conservation Medicine takes a One Health approach to address issues facing our planet, including emerging and resurging diseases, habitat use conflicts, environmental contamination, climate change, and biodiversity loss.

Cummings School is committed to providing service-learning opportunities that provide access to veterinary care for underserved populations. Tufts at Tech Community Veterinary Clinic at Worcester Technical High School, where veterinary students work alongside high school students learning to be veterinary assistants, provides low-cost care for underserved populations in Worcester. Luke and Lily Lerner Spay/Neuter Clinic provides low-cost services for shelters, offering students learning opportunities and surgical experience. Our programs in the Worcester Housing Authority provide wellness services to those who might not otherwise access them.

At Cummings School, our research programs range from infectious diseases such as such as Lyme disease and avian flu to drug addiction to heart disease and cancer in our companion animals. Our clinical trials continue to push for solutions to animal and human cancer, and other diseases. Every year, we host Veterinary Research Day, where students present the results of their innovative summer research projects. Our outstanding faculty continue to be recognized for their contributions to advancing animal and human health. Our PhD and postdoctoral fellowship programs provide advanced research training across a range of critical life sciences. Our research expertise and facilities such as the New England Regional Biosafety Laboratories helps to support research across New England and beyond.

Community engagement and active citizenship are integral to Tufts University and Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, with many opportunities offered to students. Our STEM outreach programs help to expose K-12 students to the exciting world of science and health sciences. Adventures in Veterinary Medicine program welcomes middle and high school students to learn about the veterinary profession. We are training Massachusetts' first responders to safely transport working dogs, under Nero's Law. The Center for Animals and Public Policy, and its Master of Science program, focuses on the human-animal relationship and implications for public policy and community action. Tufts' Paws for People, supports animal visitation program within the community.
