Admissions and Financial Aid

The Old Gym is one of two buildings housing the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The Old Gym was built in 1880 with funding from William Henry Vanderbilt. He's the oldest son of university founder Cornelius. While it was first used as a gym, today it hosts tens of thousands of visitors to our campus each year. Next door you will find the offices of many Vanderbilt admissions counselors as well as the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. Our financial aid program, called Opportunity Vanderbilt, is recognized as one of America's best need-based scholarship programs. We want a Vanderbilt education to be available regardless of your family's economic circumstances.

Alumni Lawn

Alumni Lawn is a central landmark at Vanderbilt. Here students gather with friends, play games, or relax with a good book. Each spring, just before finals, the popular "Rites of Spring" music festival takes over the lawn. The two-day event features a variety of popular artists such as Gucci Mane, DNCE, and Moon Taxi. The Vanderbilt student experience also begins and ends here. New Commodores are welcomed to campus at Founder's Walk, an annual tradition which culminates on Alumni Lawn. Four years later, seniors gather on Alumni Lawn to celebrate Commencement. Surrounding Alumni are campus centers such as Neely Auditorium, the Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center and the KC Potter Center — which hosts the office of LGBTQI Life.

E. Bronson Ingram College

E. Bronson Ingram College—or Bronson for short—opened in August 2018. Vanderbilt's residential colleges support living-learning communities beyond the first-year experience of The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons. Bronson houses a mix of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. It includes an apartment for a faculty director as well as a large dining hall, beautiful study rooms, a community kitchen, and spaces for academic and social events.

Kirkland Hall

Chances are if you've ever seen a photo of Vanderbilt, you've seen iconic Kirkland Hall. Originally called Old Main, Kirkland featured two towers until 1905. That's when a fire nearly devastated the structure. Resurrected by an Italian architect to resemble the town hall of Siena, the building took on new life and a new name in the early 20th century. It once featured a library, classrooms, labs, and even a chapel. Kirkland Hall now houses offices for the chancellor, vice chancellors, provost, and academic deans. Nearby are Vanderbilt Law School and Wilson Hall. These buildings sit along the edge of campus facing the bustling streets of Midtown Nashville.

Warren and Moore Colleges

Warren and Moore Residential Colleges opened in 2014. Each residential college houses sophomores, juniors, and seniors, along with a faculty director and graduate fellows. Residents here take part in loads of programs including signature events such as "Moore Mondays" where residents come together in community over a meal, and "Fresh Baked Fridays" where students are invited to share cookies and conversation with the faculty head of Warren College. These colleges surround *Kissam* Center, an activity hub with gathering and social spaces, classrooms, and 24/7 food service with indoor and outdoor seating.

Bishops Commons

Bishop's Commons is named after Bishop Holland McTyeire who was instrumental to the founding of Vanderbilt. Along its winding paths sit academic buildings Benson, Calhoun, Garland, and Furman Halls and the Owen Graduate School of Management. Thanks to Nashville's amazing weather, you may see classes taking place outside on these lawns. Just beyond Bishop's Commons stretches 21st Avenue South. It's a busy street lined with local restaurants, stores, and coffee shops that feel like an extension of campus. And rightfully so, since many of these popular spots offer discounts to students though the "Taste of Nashville" program – one of the many perks of being a Commodore.

Benson Hall

Benson Hall, which dates to the 19th century, is one of Vanderbilt's oldest buildings. Now housing the English and History Departments, Benson is the only campus building that predates the university itself. Just outside Benson is an even older campus landmark, the Bicentennial Oak. It's a tree older than the Revolutionary War! Benson is surrounded by Furman, Calhoun, and Garland halls, which house many classes taken in the College of Arts and Science. Faculty keep office hours in these buildings, making it easy for students to schedule appointments for advising or keep the conversation going outside the classroom. Also nearby is Buttrick Hall, a building that includes classrooms, a movie theatre, and the Department of Cinema & Media Arts.

Central Library

Central Library is one of nine libraries in the Jean and Alexander Heard Library System — named after Vanderbilt's fifth chancellor Alexander Heard. Together the libraries are home to more than 8-million items and special collections. This includes the world's most extensive archive of TV news coverage as well as the global music archive. In Central Library, students have access to meeting spaces and a full-service café with drinks and healthy food options. Just outside Central Library sits beautiful Benton Chapel and the Vanderbilt Divinity School. The school is one of only six in the country without a denominational affiliation.

Magnolia Lawn

Magnolia Lawn serves as the primary entrance to the Peabody College of Education and Human Development. Nearby buildings include Peabody Library, the Kennedy Center, the John Seigenthaler Center, and the Susan Gray School. Resources and research at these centers contribute to the rich academic environment on campus. Less than a block away is The Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at Vanderbilt, which aims to make creativity and cultural expression central to the undergraduate experience. Wyatt Center

At the top of the Peabody Lawn sits the Wyatt Center. Inside Wyatt, students in the Peabody College of Education and Human Development work with some of the most esteemed faculty in the field. These professors use creative and interactive styles of teaching — encouraging hands-on experiences and research opportunities. The Peabody Lawn is our largest open green space. Along the sides of the lawn rest some of our most historic buildings, including Cohen Memorial Hall, home to the Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery.

The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons

One distinctive element of the Vanderbilt experience is The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons. Here, first-year students transition from high school into a diverse living and learning community of peers and faculty. From move-in day on, new Commodores build relationships fostering social, cultural, and intellectual growth. All first-year students live in one of 10 houses. Each is guided by a faculty head of house who lives among the students. Also located here is the residence of the dean of The Ingram Commons. Students can join the dean and special guests for dinner, book clubs, and lively conversation.

The Commons Center

First-year students spend a lot of time here in The Commons Center. It's one of many LEED-certified buildings on The Ingram Commons. That means it's passed numerous "green" standards. This is just one aspect of Vanderbilt's commitment to sustainability and the environment. The Commons Center includes hangout and study spaces, workout facilities, meeting rooms, and an award-winning dining center. Outside, Commons Center Lawn hosts everything from concerts and dinners to the daily exchange of life between students and faculty.

Blair School of Music

Established in 1964, the Blair School of Music has long stood as an icon of excellence across the musical spectrum – whether in performance, learning, or research. Blair's 200 students – who work closely with professors thanks to a 4 to 1 student-to-faculty ratio – are all undergrads who benefit from a conservatory-style education with a liberal arts core. This dynamic ensures a well-rounded student body, and explains why Blair graduates have pursued careers as diverse as symphonic performance to business, law, and medicine. Even students who aren't music majors can take classes and music lessons at the school, and audition for ensembles such as the Vanderbilt Orchestra, Vanderbilt University Singers, and Vanderbilt Opera Theatre.

Student Recreation Center

The Student Recreation Center offers undergrads access to a broad selection of state-of-the-art facilities. These include a 35-meter swimming pool, strength and aerobic rooms, basketball courts, climbing wall, 4-lane bowling alley, racquetball and squash courts, and a student lounge. The fieldhouse features a 120-yard turf field and 300-meter track. Students have the opportunity to participate in over 30 club sports and 40 intramural teams, as well as fitness classes, personal training services, and health clinics. The outdoor rec center offers classes and gear rental for camping, biking, kayaking, spelunking, and whitewater rafting. Outdoor facilities include track and field space, soccer and lacrosse fields, and a sand volleyball court.

Science and Engineering Building

Vanderbilt is known for producing intellectual leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators. The Science and Engineering Building is a state-of-the-art space enhancing their work. Connected to the School of Engineering's Olin Hall, the Science and Engineering Building includes a cleanroom and advanced imaging facilities for work in nanotechnology, as well as other research labs, classroom space, and a café. The Science and Engineering Building is also home to the Wond'ry. It's the campus epicenter for creativity, collaboration, and entrepreneurship for students and faculty across all academic disciplines. The Wond'ry is designed to help develop discoveries and student concepts and bring them into the marketplace.

Featheringill-Jacobs Engineering Complex

Inside Featheringill and Jacobs Halls, Vanderbilt engineering students break new ground with the field's top minds in more than 50 teaching and research labs. Engineering students choose from eight disciplines and take liberal arts classes in the College of Arts and Science. Students also get an impressive amount of hands-on experience as undergrads — solving design problems in real-world settings and participating in internships and study-abroad programs. School of Engineering alumni work at top firms such as Amazon, Microsoft, Exxon Mobil, and Google, and regularly consult on government and other projects. Nearby is McTyeire International House—a residence hall promoting the use of foreign languages and the awareness of different cultures.

Vanderbilt Stadium and Hawkins Field

Vanderbilt stadium and Hawkins Field are where Commodores come to cheer on our teams in S-E-C action. Completed in 1922, Dudley Field was the first field in the south built exclusively for college football. Vanderbilt Stadium has also hosted special events including a visit by President John F. Kennedy, and concerts by U2 and Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Hawkins Field is home to Vanderbilt's baseball team, winner of the 2014 and 2019 College World Series. This state-of-the-art facility puts fans close to the field in a classic ball park atmosphere. The stadium is named for the Charles Hawkins family. Both Charles Hawkins the second and his son played baseball and football for Vanderbilt.

Memorial Gym

Memorial Gym is home to Vanderbilt's men's and women's basketball teams. It's noted for its unique design, with the gym floor raised above the ground and benches underneath each basket, instead of along the sidelines. It's a perfect setup for our famed "Memorial Magic." When games aren't taking place, Memorial hosts speaking events and Commodore Quake, our annual homecoming concert. It's featured The Band Perry and Kendrick Lamar, among others. Memorial Gym was dedicated in 1952 to honor fallen students and alumni from World War Two.

West End Residential Colleges

Nicholas S. Zeppos College, Vanderbilt's newest residential option, opened in the fall of 2020. It features a state-of-the-art dining hall, study lounges, common rooms, and other event spaces. Zeppos College is one of 3 new residential colleges that will sit along West End between 23rd and 25th Avenues. These new residential colleges for sophomores, juniors, and seniors are scheduled to be completed by 2023. As part of Future-VU, Vanderbilt's long-term campus plan, the West End Neighborhood area around these colleges will also see improvements, including added greenspaces and pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly paths.

Vanderbilt Bookstore

Vanderbilt's main bookstore is located at the corner of 25th and West End Avenues. Located in a shopping complex next to several restaurants, boutiques, and cafes, the bookstore stocks just about everything a student could need. Whether it's a textbook, a pair of headphones, a latte, or even a VU shirt, the bookstore has it all. And just a short walk across West End is the city's premier urban green space, Centennial Park. Here, in addition to an exact replica of the Parthenon, 132 acres is put to use for everything from live music to theatre to simply enjoying the day outside.

Bronson Ingram Studio Arts

The E. Bronson Ingram Studio Arts Center is home to the Art Department. A center for creativity on campus, the facility offers studios for painting, drawing, design, print-making, multimedia, computer design, photography, sculpture, and ceramics. In addition, an experimental gallery called Space 204 hosts student shows and serves as a workshop for artists-in-residence. Step inside the first floor to visit an open, informal space for student art, run by students themselves. These exhibition spaces are complemented by numerous galleries on campus, including the Fine Arts gallery in Cohen Memorial Hall. All are part of the diverse, creative community at Vanderbilt and around Nashville.

Student Life Center

The Student Life Center offers more than 18-thousand square feet of space for student events, speakers, and more. It also houses important departments at Vanderbilt, including the Office of Immersion Resources, the Career Center, Global Education Office, and International Student and Scholar Services. Nearby are the Schulman Center for Jewish Life, home to Vanderbilt's Hillel chapter and the focal point for Jewish cultural activities on campus, and Saint Augustine's Chapel, a vibrant place of worship for Vanderbilt students and Nashville residents alike. Close by you'll find the Office of the University Chaplain and Religious Life, which supports vibrant campus communities that encompass diverse religious, spiritual, and secular perspectives. Student religious affinity groups include the Muslim Students Association, Vanderbilt Interfaith Council, and Vandy Karma.

West End Neighborhood

In addition to housing Nicholas S. Zeppos College and two future residential colleges, Vanderbilt's West End Neighborhood includes open green space and the houses of Vanderbilt's fraternities and sororities. With more than 475 registered student organizations, undergrads participate in all kinds of social- and service-related activities, including Greek life. About 35 percent of undergrads are involved in 26 Greek chapters. Nearby sits Branscomb Quad. Here, four residential houses for upper-class students are named after outstanding women in Vanderbilt's history: Kate Lupton Wilkinson, Anne Scales Benedict, Ada Bell Stapleton, and Stella Scott Vaughn.

Sarratt Rand

Sarratt-Rand combines two distinct spaces: Sarratt Student Center and Rand Dining Hall. At Sarratt, students can study in various creative spaces, chat over coffee, or watch movies in the cinema. In Rand, you'll find an open seating area to eat fresh, healthy meals representing tastes from around the world. Outside, students gather by "The Wall." There you can find students promoting events and holding fundraisers. Just a short walk away is the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities and the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center. It was named for the university's first African American student and offers excellent educational and cultural programming on the African American experience.
