STEM Complex

Innovation Hall connects to Discovery and Votey halls to form UVM's state-of-the-art STEM complex. STEM majors make up one-third of undergraduate enrollment and 60 percent of graduate enrollment at UVM, but this gleaming new complex serves students of all majors; 90 percent of UVM undergrads take two or more STEM courses during their college careers. Specialized facilities inside the complex include "DeepGreen," one of the nation's fastest supercomputers, as well as laboratories contributing to advances in areas such as disease control, nanotechnology, network theory, sensor technology, and the development of "xenobots," tiny living machines that could revolutionize everything from waste clean-up to delivery of medicine to target cells. Situated right near the UVM Medical Center and the Larner College of Medicine, the complex is active with biomedical and other cross-disciplinary discovery and innovation.

UVM Medical Center

The University of Vermont Medical Center is right on main campus. For UVM nursing, health science and premed students, that means immediate access to a full range of training and volunteer opportunities at a premier Level 1 trauma center serving more than 1 million people throughout Vermont and upstate New York. UVM's medical center connects to the Larner College of Medicine, where many undergrads find positions in labs doing exciting research—experience that contributes to their success gaining admission to medical school and to PA, PT and other professional programs in health and medical sciences.

Lake Champlain & Research Labs

Lake Champlain is one of UVM's most scenic classrooms and a large-scale laboratory for studying water quality, aquatic species, hydrogeology, history, and more. The sixth largest freshwater lake in the country, Champlain is a historic center of both commerce and recreation, connecting to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Hudson River and Saint Lawrence Seaway. Students and faculty gain direct access to Champlain's waters from UVM's lakeside Rubenstein Laboratory and specially equipped research vessel, the Melosira. A boathouse, marina, and sailing center, waterfront beaches, parks, restaurants, and an aquatic ecosystems museum, and an 8-mile bike path are also just a mile from campus on Lake Champlain's shoreline.

Why UVM

Many students say UVM's size is ideal, followed by the explanation "You're always running into friends, but also meeting someone new—and professors really do get to know you by name and they want to connect." That's possible with a 16:1 student to faculty ratio and with 78 percent of classes enrolling 40 students or fewer, and 49 percent enrolling no more than twenty. Robust research opportunities for undergrads are also among UVM's draws, along with rewarding internships, study abroad options for all majors, and UVM's location in one of the nation's favorite small cities within a landscape offering all kinds of outdoor adventure.

Grossman School of Business

Ifshin and Kalkin halls are home to UVM's Grossman School of Business, where studies in finance, accounting, marketing, and more are not "business as usual." UVM students learn a "triple-bottom-line" approach, where healthy profit, society, and planet together define success. This approach, plus the success of our alumni, earn UVM perennial ranking as a top "Green MBA" program in the nation. Here in Ifshin Hall we're surrounded by space for business case competitions and presentations by visiting experts who are part of a strong UVM network offering students exciting internship and job opportunities. A unique area of expertise in the Grossman School is family business studies.

Honors College

Welcome to University Heights—home to UVM's Honors College, a residential program for students dedicated to the highest levels of scholarship. Honors College scholars take special seminars, attend unique events, and receive scholarships and other distinctions while also participating as a student in one of UVM's other undergraduate schools and colleges. First-year students are invited to join the Honors College based on information shared in their application to UVM; students who excel during their first year of study at the university may apply for Honors College entry in their second year. Many other opportunities for intensive scholarship and intellectual engagement exist for students outside the Honors College, including undergraduate research; leadership positions on academic councils; and national and global competitions in business, debate, engineering, and other fields.

Howe Library

UVM's Howe Library has stacks of books, journals, videos, and rare archives. It's also the place to borrow a GoPro and other media equipment. For students in our Central Campus Residence, here's a bonus: students can shuffle to their favorite library study nook right from their room by way of a skyway connection. But great study spots exist all over campus—some with views, fireside seats, or a ready supply of coffee. What students love most about UVM's libraries are the dedicated experts offering help with assignments and research. At UVM, we support success at every step through our writing, subject tutoring, and accessibility centers and other student support services.

Sustainability - Aiken Center

Aiken is "basecamp" for UVM's acclaimed Rubenstein School for Environment and Natural Resources. It features green design, including a green roof where students and faculty study different watersheds—and get a birds-eye view of campus. Study of the environment also happens hands-on in bio-diverse natural areas throughout Vermont. The natural laboratory surrounding us is one reason UVM ranks a top school for studying and practicing sustainability. Other reasons include UVM's electricity use achieving carbon neutrality since 2015; 25% of campus food certified as local, organic, humanely raised, and/or fair trade; and student-led initiatives like ending the sale of bottled water on campus and divesting of fossil fuel investments.

Arts - Southwick Recital Hall

Fine and performing arts at UVM are active and supported by an array of inspiring venues. Southwick Recital Hall is a favorite performance space for the university's nearly twenty small and large music ensembles—also to visiting artists from around the world brought to UVM through our Lane Performing Arts Series. For visual fine arts, UVM's Robert Hull Fleming Museum, a regional treasure, offers students exceptional opportunities to study—and even curate exhibitions—working directly with the museum's expansive collection of ethnographic materials and fine art pieces, including several masterworks. For dance and studio arts, bright open studios are found throughout Cohen Hall for the Integrative Creative Arts and in historic Williams Hall. Classic and contemporary productions come to life on the dynamic thrust stage within UVM's beloved Royall Tyler Theater—you don't have to be a theatre major to participate.

Animal Sciences - Paul Miller Reseach Complex

The Miller Complex is one of several UVM facilities supporting food systems, horticulture, and animal science research. As Vermont's land grant university, UVM partners with Vermont on projects important to local and national human and environmental health. For students, that means hands-on experience with plant and soil scientists, food safety experts, and veterinarians in orchards, barns, and fields. In a signature program we call "CREAM" (Cooperative Real Education for Agriculture Management) students manage every aspect of a 30-head dairy herd—from milking to breeding to selling product. CREAM is a popular as well as successful training ground with UVM pre-vet students; more than 90 percent gain admission to veterinary school

Our Common Ground

More importantly, they are actively explored in general education courses taken by every UVM student. And, they are advanced through initiatives like the President's Common Ground Scholarship for underrepresented students and UVM's gender-inclusive housing and preferred name options. Students are a driving force behind many campus programs and events that strengthen Our Common Ground values and UVM's companion ideal of "inclusive excellence." Residential Life - Central Campus Residence Hall

At UVM, learning happens everywhere—including in our residence halls. All first- and second-year students start out by living in one of our Learning Communities, themed residences where students share a common interest that brings them together and inspires action. It's an instant formula for making connections and getting involved! Learning Community options include Arts and Creativity, Cultural Crossroads, Honors College, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Social Change, Liberal Arts Scholars Program, Outdoor Experience, Sustainability, and UVM's Wellness Environment—an innovative brain science-based approach to living which has drawn national attention. An assortment of single, double, and triple-occupancy rooms arranged in corridor, suite, and private-style living are found throughout our residences. Each hall also has its own appeal.

Residential Life - Dining

We're in the Central Campus Residence, home to our Wellness Environment Learning Community. The first-floor dining area features rustic, open-style kitchens serving up comfort foods, grilled favorites, a vegetarian station, and My Zone, an area free of gluten, peanuts and tree nuts. All of our residence complexes have on-site or close-by dining options catering to a wide range of appetites—also study spaces, lounges, nearby laundry facilities, and kitchenettes where residents can collaborate on projects, gather, and prepare and share a meal together.

Student Life - Davis Center

The Davis Student Center is perfectly positioned at the center of UVM's hilltop campus. This Gold Star green building is a great place to grab a bite, play a round of trivia, reset with yoga or a game of billiards. It's also where to go to find internships and start a successful job search; UVM's Career Center is on the first floor. So is our Center for Health and Wellbeing, which supports good physical and mental health. And, Davis is headquarters for Student Government and a host of nearly 250 student clubs, including our award-winning paper The Vermont Cynic, and popular radio station *WRUV* at 90.1 FM—tune in!

Student Life - Athletic Campus

Here we are on UVM's Athletic Campus looking out over Virtue Soccer Field. Whether you're more spectator or participant, drawn to physical challenge or fun, you'll find all kinds of good sports at UVM. Crowds of Catamount fans come out to cheer on the university's 18 NCAA Division 1 athletic teams competing in fast-paced AmericaEast league play. Many UVM varsity athletes have also been celebrated Olympians and professional standouts. A big percentage of students get involved in more than 50 club sports—teams range from climbing to crew, disc golf to dressage; many offer high-level intercollegiate competition. For action focused on camaraderie and a whole lot of fun, students grab hallmates and classmates, brooms, flags, and sticks for Campus Recreation-sponsored kickball, badminton, Capture the Flag, and other play. Students simply looking to stay healthy find facilities and classes aimed at just that in our main athletic facility, several residences, and other sites across campus.

Burlington, Vermont

UVM is located in Burlington, a city celebrated for great restaurants, performing arts, parks and recreation and all can be found an easy walk, bike, or bus ride down the hill from campus. Burlington is also known for business innovation—it's where Ben and Jerry's, Burton Snowboards, Dealer.com and other industry successes got their start. Students find a wide range of internships with these and other businesses, also with municipal departments, human service agencies, non-profit and other organizations throughout the city and surrounding area. Burlington is easily reached by car or bus from Boston and New York City; and Burlington airport, just 3 miles from campus, has daily flights from several major hubs. Within an hour's drive are some of the best hiking, ski, and snowboard trails in the East, and just 100 miles away, over the Canadian border, is cosmopolitan Montreal.

Mansfield to the depth of Lake Champlain, Vermont provides endless opportunities for recreation in every season—also for study focused on wildlife, forests, water quality, park management, food systems, sustainable business and more right in our backyard. Here we are on the UVM Green, the original heart of campus, surrounded by majestic historic buildings that remind us the University of Vermont has both seen and helped shape a lot of history. Founded in 1791, UVM is the 5th oldest university in New England. Since then, UVM has often been in the forefront of important scholarship and research that has helped improve human and environmental health and advance social justice. UVM was the first institution of higher education to admit women and African Americans into Phi Beta Kappa honor society, also the first to declare public support for religious freedom. At the opening of each academic year, the entire first-year class gathers on the Green for a candlelight ceremony and joins UVM's pledge to aspire to be a community that values Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Openness, Justice, and Responsibility; we call this "Our Common Ground."

Admissions

UVM welcomes applications from students just graduating high school and starting their college careers, as well as from those who have already begun their undergraduate studies and are considering transfer to and completion of their degree at UVM. Students may apply using either the Common Application or the Coalition Application. Eighty-eight percent of undergraduates receive grants and scholarships including international and transfer students. Vermont's small population contributes to an unusual enrollment for a public university; 27 percent of UVM students are Vermont residents and 73 percent come from other parts of the U.S. and world. The result: a geographically diverse student body contributing to UVM's open atmosphere and expansive perspective.
