Biomedical Preparatory

Biomedical Preparatory at UT Southwestern provides a unique educational experience for youth through a partnership with the Dallas Independent School District and UT Southwestern. We provide young children with a firm foundation in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. Students are exposed to real-world science and experiential learning opportunities at the STEM-focused elementary school. Our curriculum is designed to stimulate curiosity and encourage future discovery in the sciences. Children of UT Southwestern employees and students are eligible to apply.

Seldin & McDermott Plazas

When you first walk on to South Campus, you’ll enter Seldin Plaza – named after Dr. Donald W. Seldin, regarded as the intellectual father of UT Southwestern and a giant of medicine and medical education. Dr. Seldin served as the Chairman of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern for 36 years and has been described as one of the greatest figures of American medicine over the past century. As UT Southwestern’s “front door,” Seldin Plaza is the home of one-of-a-kind sculptures by well-known artists and serves as the entry point to the nearby McDermott Plaza, which hosts many campus events and celebrations.

Simulation Center

Occupying 49,000 square feet on the second and third floors of west campus building 3, UT Southwestern’s simulation center replicates and creates virtual environments for training in clinical care and procedures. A wide variety of settings are provided, including operating rooms, labor and delivery suites, intensive care units, and the emergency room. Learners are exposed to multiple aspects of patient care, providing them an opportunity to practice clinical and behavioral skills in one of the largest and best-equipped simulation facilities in the nation.

Team Based Learning Center

The Team-Based Learning Center is one of the largest of its kind in the country, measuring 17,000 square feet and enhancing UT Southwestern’s educational curriculum. It was developed with the idea that medicine is increasingly becoming a team-based activity. Featuring moveable hideaway walls, this large space can be converted into three smaller learning areas, each with an instructor station. The room can support 960 integrated wireless connections, as well as multiple high-definition screens. The space overlooks Seldin Plaza and is also used by the greater UT Southwestern community for events and team gatherings.

Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility

The cryo-electron microscopy facility contains comprehensive equipment for biomedical discoveries. Opened in 2016, the facility operates 24/7 and is one of the world’s top resources for cryo-em structural biology. Its three main instruments — a 12 ½-foot tall, two-ton titan krios; a talos arctica; and an aquilos dualbeam — allow researchers to view 3d images of objects at an atomic level at -196 degrees Celsius. As one of the first institutions in the world with this equipment, it is a milestone for structural research here and elsewhere. Furthermore, campus will soon include an additional cryo-em facility, that will house another titan krios and a glaciers used for microcrystal electron diffraction.

William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital

Ranked the number one hospital in Dallas-Fort Worth for several years, William P. Clements jr. University hospital offers patients and care teams the latest facilities and technologies. Opened in 2014, the hospital was expanded in fall 2020 and now includes more than 750 patient rooms, over 40 operating rooms, and a larger emergency department. Upon arrival, patients and visitors enter the main reception area that serves as the hub of guest services and admissions. Amenities here include a gift shop. Just off to the side, you'll find an area offering an electronic greeting card station, access to public computers and printers, and interactive displays that highlight UT Southwestern's history. The hospital also holds a large and diverse art collection spread throughout the building. The art was selected with two principles in mind: promote healing and represent the innovation that UT Southwestern is known for.

Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute

The Peter O’Donnell jr. Brain Institute unites scientists and clinicians in aggressively exploring the body’s most complex organ and medicine’s greatest mystery – the human brain. Currently housed in several different facilities across campus, the institute offers groundbreaking research as well as treatments for more than 200 conditions. Here, understanding becomes healing, as scientific and clinical investigations converge to increase knowledge of the brain and transform how neurological and psychiatric disorders are diagnosed and treated. The ultimate goal: discover and implement new and better ways to treat major forms of nervous system disease.

Bryan Williams, MD Student Center

One of the most popular spots on south campus is the Bryan Williams, M.D. Student Center. The facility is named after Dr. Bryan Williams, a former dean of students, who was one of the first UT Southwestern faculty members elected to the national academy of sciences and a beloved figure on campus. The Bryan Williams, M.D. Student Center contains 43,000 square feet of fitness and recreation opportunities where members can be active, interact, learn, and enjoy a sense of community. Open more than 100 hours each week, the award-winning facility is available for anyone on campus.

Pickens Biomedical Building 14th Floor

This is the perfect spot for lunch with a view. With floor-to-ceiling windows and a dining room with an array of culinary choices, the 14th floor of the T. Boone Pickens Biomedical Building provides panoramic views of Dallas, including the Southwestern Medical District, downtown Dallas, and love field. Here, you can order entrees, sandwiches, soups, and salads. Additionally, three conference rooms are available for use, and the entire floor is wired with the latest technology to fulfill your audiovisual needs. We may not have a revolving restaurant, but you can see the future of medicine today from here – and on a clear day, Fort Worth too.

Bird Sanctuary

In the midst of UT Southwestern's busy south campus is the "Rookery" – a nearly four-acre sanctuary that is home to more than 70 species of birds. It's a great place to bird watch, take photos of egrets and enjoy the peacefulness. Here, there is also a memorial garden in honor of those who helped further the advancement of medical science.

Children's Medical Center Dallas

UT Southwestern faculty care for young patients at children’s medical center Dallas, our primary pediatrics clinical partner. Over the span of just 50 years, children’s grew from a 90-bed facility to a near 600-bed hospital with virtually every major pediatric specialty and subspecialty. Today, children’s is nationally recognized for its programs in medicine and surgery and is the training site for all UT Southwestern students who rotate through pediatrics and the surgical subspecialties to gain clinical experience with infants and young children.

Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Harold C. Simmons comprehensive cancer center is the only cancer center in north Texas – and one of just 51 nationally -- to be designated as comprehensive by the national cancer institute. The mission of the Simmons cancer center is to ease the burden of cancer through groundbreaking discovery, transdisciplinary research, impactful community engagement, education, and exceptional patient care. From its headquarters in the UT Southwestern campus, Simmons has more than a dozen major cancer care programs that are each advancing the treatment and prevention of cancer. And with satellite locations in Richardson/Plano and Fort Worth, the center’s impact and reach continue to grow in our catchment area in north Texas.

Cyclotron and Radiochemistry Facility

UT Southwestern’s cyclotron facility, located underground on the north campus, generates positron-emitting radioisotopes and radiotracers to enable preclinical, translational, and clinical research with pet imaging. Housed within a six-foot-thick concrete vault, the 44,000-pound machine accelerates particles to nearly 20% of the speed of light. The cyclotron gives researchers and physicians opportunities for major advances in monitoring and treating patients with cancer, as well as for developing new drugs for cancer and many other conditions.

Parkland Memorial Hospital

UT Southwestern faculty members have been caring for patients at Parkland Memorial Hospital for decades, providing diagnosis and treatment for virtually every type of condition or disease. UT Southwestern’s primary teaching facility, Parkland is Dallas county’s only public hospital and, licensed for 882 beds, one of the largest in the U.S. Parkland is home to a level 1 trauma center and a burn center, both of which are internationally recognized. Its emergency room is one of the busiest in the country. Parkland is also known for its specialty medicine clinics, including arrhythmia management and diagnostic cardiology.

Forest of Light

A unique feature of UT Southwestern's west campus building 3 is the rooftop garden. Spanning 55,000 square feet, this beautiful outdoor space was created to provide a place of tranquility for patients and employees. The "Forest of Light," composed of 23 acrylic poles with LED lighting, along with 57 powder-coated steel poles, was installed in 2019 and is a product of philanthropy from members of the Dallas community to honor the extraordinary patient care of a prominent UT Southwestern physician. The rooftop also provides an impressive view of the downtown Dallas skyline. It's a favorite campus spot for many.
