Welcome to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, founded in the late 1700's, making it one of the oldest public universities in the United States and one that is ranked high in both academics and athletics. Nearly 30,000 students attend UNC-Chapel Hill, with undergraduates taking a liberal arts core curriculum before having the option of attending one of the professional schools. UNC-Chapel Hill resides on 730 acres and is split into three areas: north campus, middle campus, and south campus. The campus won an American Society of Landscape Architects Medallion Award and was chosen to be part of a book entitled The Campus as a Work of Art. Let's take a look at this campus!

This stately brick and pillared building was named after the first dean of the School of Commerce, which later morphed into the School of Business. In 1999, however, Dudley Dewitt Carroll Hall became home to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Joining other professional schools on campus, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication has some unique academic offerings, like a Business Journalism Major, the Carolina Community Media Project, the Medical and Science Journalism Program, and a combined Master's/J.D. program for those students also interested in law.

The Forest Theatre is a unique and whimsical outdoor theatre located near UNC's Arboretum. It is dedicated to Frederick Koch, a leader in American folk drama and the founder of the Carolina Playmakers. The Forest Theatre is primarily used for weddings and drama series, weather permitting.

UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Medicine is part of a university-wide, multidisciplinary initiative to grow the field of Genome Science, which concerns the exciting research and medical innovations that are made possible by the study of DNA and the Human Genome Project. North Carolina voters and Congress as a whole supported extensive funding for this ongoing large-scale initiative, which is great news if you are considering a science-related career while you are at UNC.

More than 7,000 students live on campus and Graham Hall is one of twenty- nine residence halls that they may call home. Built in 1924 and located on the lower quad, Graham is an all-male residence hall that houses approximately ninety-three students. Amenities include an elevator, kitchen, ice machine, study areas, laundry facilities, and a recreation room. Living on campus is a great way to take part in campus life and meet new people.

If you are able to make it to the Chapel Hill campus, you will join 20,000 other visitors who have come here to Jackson Hall, home to the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Formerly called the Navy Hall, it was originally used for a Navy Pre-Flight School during World War II and later became a public dining room. In 1992, the name was changed to Jackson Hall to honor UNC-Chapel Hill's first black tenured professor and his professor wife.

The eight-story Walter Royal Davis Library, the main library on campus, is the biggest academic facility in all of North Carolina. This is where you will find humanities, social science, and foreign language materials, as well as maps and government documents. The first and second floors have computers for student use, while the 3rd and 8th floors both offer group study spaces that can be reserved. In order to cater to students' needs, the Library extends its hours, often until 2am, during exam periods.

More than 800 students take Education classes on the undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate levels here at Peabody Hall. UNC's School of Education was founded in 1876 and it has been training future teachers with practical school-based learning and a rich classroom experience ever since.

The Student Recreation Center is just one of UNC's fitness centers, aimed at fostering a fun and healthy environment that encourages the recreational pursuits of the entire UNC community. Located near the southern end of campus and connected to multiple gymnasium facilities, the Student Rec. Center offers plenty of cardiovascular and weight-training machines, as well as a full calendar of fitness classes like Zumba, Yoga, and Pilates, and events like the Jingle Bell Jog.

The Student Union is a place you may find yourself visiting on a daily basis, as it is home to many student services. Student groups and organizations hold meetings and events here, and rooms can be reserved for as many as 600 people. Construction in the year 2000 added 42,000 square-feet onto the building, with students passing through to grab a bite to eat, use the copy center, check email on the computers, or pick up their mail.

Here we are at the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library, a repository for volumes that document the history and culture of UNC as well as the state and country. These collections focus on rare books, southern folk life, and southern history. Additionally, Wilson Library houses the Science Library Annex as well as the Music Library.
