Situated at the heart of campus, The Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center is home to twelve active learning classrooms, nine state-of-the art Chemistry Labs, and includes both formal and informal student study spaces throughout. International Student and Scholar Services welcomes all new international students to the University of Maryland College Park. ISSS recognizes the contributions made by international students that enrich our classrooms, campus and community. The office assists international students with transitioning to the United States and coordinates international programs that serve students, faculty, and visitors. Some services include advising and assisting with immigration requirements, programming on educational, cultural and social issues, international student orientation and a weekly international student coffee hour.

We're now at a busy cross-section of campus known as Hornbake Plaza. Here, students make their way to classes, meet with friends, and do work. On the south side of the Plaza stands Hornbake Library, one of Maryland's eight libraries. Inside, be sure to visit the Maryland Room, where you can study all aspects of the university's past and present.
Surrounding the Plaza you'll find academic buildings for the College of Computer, Mathematical, & Natural Sciences and the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. To the east, the Bioscience Research Building is a laboratory and teaching facility that features 35 labs, a 500 seat lecture hall, and meeting rooms.
Frederick Douglass Square

The University of Maryland dedicated a memorial on campus to honor abolitionist Frederick Douglass, a son of Maryland who has come to represent America's quest for freedom, liberty and the rights of all people in a democracy. The square is a commemorative public space centered on Hornbake Plaza, a prominent campus location and hub of student activity. The square features stone pavers and a vertical corten wall, both engraved to highlight Douglass' words. The wall is built in planters filled with native Irish and Maryland plants to represent Douglass' roots in Maryland and his Irish supporters abroad. In the center, a seven and a half-foot-tall bronze statue portrays an urgent and youthful Douglass, created by renowned sculptor Andrew Edwards, memorializing Douglass as an enduring role model for social justice.

No matter how hard you try, chances are that there will be a day at Maryland when you feel a little under the weather. Thankfully, professional staff at the University Health Center can help. One of only 15% of accredited health centers on a college campus, the Health Center provides care to students in need including preventative exams, pharmaceutical services, immunizations, and mental health counseling.
The Health Center supports the experiential development and learning of student interns, peer educators and volunteers. Some students receive academic credit by completing internships or serving as a peer educators, while others complete a specified number of service hours in order to place into competitive programs after graduation.

The Nyumburu Cultural Center serves as a major resource of cultural, historical, and social programming at the University of Maryland. The obesity epidemic, climate change, substance abuse, aging, and health disparities are just a few of the complex issues tackled in the School of Public Health. Students take advantage of Maryland's proximity to Washington, D.C., by completing internships at the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and many of the other federal agencies in our backyard. Faculty in the School of Public Health are training the next generation of researchers through a commitment to mentoring and student-oriented education.

The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, also known as The Clarice, is the largest collegiate performing arts center on the east coast of the United States. It holds six performance venues including an outdoor amphitheater, recording studio, workshops, lighting lab, 30 classrooms, and 50 rehearsal rooms.
The Clarice hosts more than 1,000 events each year, ranging from student-run productions to professional dance, music, and theatre performances, most of which are free to students. Professional actors, musicians, dancers, singers, and scholars work alongside Maryland students to connect the classroom to the stage.

The Riggs Alumni Center is a monument to the achievements of Maryland's graduates and a gathering place for friends of the university. With entrepreneurs, scientists, entertainers, political leaders, and Nobel Prize winners and Laureates among our alumni, Terps create a strong network that can support you when looking for internships, job opportunities, and mentors.
Outside of Riggs, you'll find one of six campus statues for our mascot, Testudo the Diamondback Terrapin. The Diamondback Terrapin is the only turtle native to the state of Maryland, and the university adopted Testudo as its official symbol, in part, because Terrapins only move forward, just like our students.

Knight Hall is home to Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism and is the university's first LEED certified building. With Pulitzer Prize, Peabody Award, and Emmy winners among their faculty, journalism students stay current with the rapidly changing world of global storytelling. Many graduate having completed several internships.
Be sure to check out Knight Hall's "News Bubble." Open 24 hours a day, the Bubble has all the equipment and software students need to work on multi-platform and broadcast projects. Knight Hall also features two of the university's three broadcast studios and a large atrium, which is a popular place for students to hang out between classes.

Standing in the beautiful Tawes Plaza, we are surrounded by academic and residential buildings. The Art-Sociology Building regularly hosts free exhibits and maintains a 100,000 volume art library. The College of Education, housed in the Benjamin Building, is consistently ranked as one of the top colleges of education in the country.
Tawes Plaza is just one of Maryland's vast networks of open and green spaces. Walking to class, catching up on homework, and dealing with the busy schedule of a college student can get pretty stressful.
