Welcome to Texas Southern University. My name is Crystal Owens. Texas Southern reaches across the globe from its location in Houston, the heart of one of the world's greatest cities. It is a student-centered, comprehensive doctoral university committed to ensuring equality, offering innovative programs that are responsive to its urban setting, and transforming diverse students into lifelong learners, engaged citizens and creative leaders in their local, national, and global communities. TSU transforms students from a host of backgrounds into a community of scholars committed to excellence. Our high-profile graduates include Michael Strahan, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Whalum, Kermit Oliver, and a host of others.
The Texas Southern University Health and Physical Education Arena houses the men's and women's Basketball teams, and the Lady Tigers Volleyball team. The arena was built in 1989 and seats 8,100. H&PE arena has been the site of countless concerts, sports competitions and graduations. Notable events held in H&PE include the first Southwestern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament hosted by TSU in 1991, a visit by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when she was awarded the inaugural Barbara Jordan Leadership Medallion in 2015, and the Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate broadcast by ABC News in 2019. The Department of Human Performance is also located in H&PE.
Leonard H.O Spearman Technology Building

The Leonard Spearman Technology Building, is a $31 million, four-story building that houses six academic departments tied to the College of Science, Engineering and Technology: Aviation Science and Technology, Computer Science, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Physics and Transportation Studies. It features 35 laboratories including vehicle emissions testing, air traffic control, health and nuclear physics, geotechnical materials testing, environmental engineering, a full-motion flight simulator and various other engineering, physics and computer science labs. TSU is the only four-year, state-supported university in Texas to offer a Pilot Ground School course and the first HBCU to implement a Maritime Transportation degree program.
Science Building

TSU's Science Building was built to advance scientific education and research. The building is cited as a gateway to the campus. The Science Building is home to the math, chemistry and biology departments. It contains teaching and research labs, lecture classrooms and faculty offices. The department boasts a number of respected scientific partners, including NASA. Facility features in the new science building includes 10 biology teaching and 10 chemistry teaching labs, 12 chemistry and 10 biology research labs, and one vivarium for rodents. The building boasts an efficient lab and corridor plan achieving 60 percent usable floor area.
Rollins-Stewart Music Center

The Rollins-Stewart Music Center is home to TSU's Department of Music. Jazz masters Kirk Whalum, the late Joe Sample, and Howard Harris are a few of the noteworthy students who honed their craft in the center. TSU's renowned Ocean of Soul marching band prepares from the end of the summer into late fall for their dynamic stadium and parade performances. Aspiring musicians and future music instructors spend countless hours training in opera, choir, jazz and band performance. This department offers degrees in Music Theory and Composition, Performance and Music Education. The Rhinehart Music Auditorium, a 300-seat facility, stands next door to the Music Center.

Thornton Fairchild Hall is the oldest building on campus and was erected in 1946. It houses Career Services, International Programs and is the site of several freshman-level courses.
University Museum

The University Museum at TSU was founded in 2000 and is located in the south wing of Fairchild Hall. The Museum exhibits African and African-American art and artifacts, the collections of Texas Southern University, and supports the arts in Houston. The University Museum has exhibits by renowned artists Dr. John Biggers, Kermit Oliver and others of the African Diaspora. The Museum's annual For the Sake of Art event showcases upcoming artisans who display their dynamic fashion designs and artwork.
Student Recreation & Wellness Center

Student Recreation and Wellness Center. The Recreation and Wellness Center was built and designed in 2001 to serve TSU students, faculty, staff, alumni and the surrounding community. The 69,000 square-foot facility has a three-court gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, a 25-meter swimming pool, a state-of-the-art weight room, an aerobic dance studio, a one-and-a-half mile indoor jogging track, a food court, plus the student computer center and offices. Swimming lessons, CPR certification and lifeguard training are offered. Intramural sports, club sports and summer youth camp programs are held in the Recreation and Wellness Center.
MLK School of Communication

The Martin Luther King Junior building is home to the TSU School of Communications. Programs in radio, television and film, the entertainment and recording industry, speech communication and journalism are offered here. Faculty members create career-ready communications professionals. Students get hands-on training in the campus television studio and sharpen their broadcast skills at Texas Southern's recording studio and campus radio station, KTSU-FM. TSU students get insider information about the entertainment and recording industries from professors who have worked with recognized artists in music, television, stage and film.
Ernest S. Sterling Student Life Center

The Sterling Student Life Center is the epicenter of campus life at TSU. Students from across the university converge in this space to engage in unique social, cultural and educational activities. Located on the Tiger Walk, the Student Center is home to administrative space for the Student Government Association, campus organizations, University Program Council, the Herald newspaper and Tiger Yearbook, TSU Cheerleaders and the Student Activities office. This is where you can find the Barnes & Noble Bookstore and food outlets. A game room, bowling alley, the copy center, and barber and beauty services are located in the Student Center as well as dedicated space for meetings, events, and conferences.

Lanier East and West are identical dorms located on the famed Tiger Walk for freshmen and upper-class students. Lanier East is a co-ed dormitory with single and double-occupancy rooms. Lanier West is an all-female dormitory. Both dorms are equipped with cable and high-speed internet, computer labs, laundry facilities and lounge areas.
KTSU-FM/Recording Studio

Texas Southern's KTSU radio station, found at 90.9 FM, is the premier community spot on the dial in the Houston area. KTSU features R&B Oldies, Blues, Gospel, Reggae and Hip-Hop genres and is a training ground for students in TSU's School of Communications. The station has three production rooms, five live broadcast booths, student studios, and a multi-purpose room. The KTSU Recording Studio is adjacent to the station, where production occurs for KTSU programming, the station's Community Outreach Initiative and TSU's music community. The Live Room, at nearly 1,000 square feet, is large enough to accommodate choirs, bands and jazz ensembles to serve the Houston's music community.
University Health Center

The University Health Center is committed to providing quality health care and health education programs to students attending Texas Southern University. Students enrolled for the current semester can receive clinic services by presenting their Tiger One Card. Services include primary care for acute illness and injuries, asthma management, vision screening, mental health referrals, seasonal flu shots, free HIV/STD testing and meningitis vaccinations. The Health Center is located on Tierwester Street next to the General Services Building. The Center's hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Urban Academic Village

The Urban Academic Village is a 320-bed facility, offering efficiency, small and large one- bedroom apartments, both shared and private. UAV is open to freshmen and upper-class students. The complex is located in the heart of TSU's campus, within walking distance to classes and campus activities. Meal plans are available for UAV student-residents.

University Hall opened in 2016 as the premier housing complex for freshmen. The seven-story, 800-bed facility offers shared bedroom space with a semi-private bath, plus internet and cable access. Each floor of the building features common lounges and dedicated study spaces. University Hall includes a dining area, street-level retail, a rooftop terrace, and is located on the eastern edge of campus.

Barbara Jordan/ Mickey Leland Public Affairs Building

The Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs is named after two pioneers in the political arena. The late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan and the late Congressman Mickey Leland were graduates of Texas Southern University and left a sterling legacy in the nation's capital. The School of Public Affairs offers courses in Justice Administration, Political Science, Public Affairs, Forensics, and Military Science that lead to three undergraduate degrees and five graduate degrees. Students can learn how to formulate and shape public policy through a range of opportunities for academic research, professional development, community partnerships, and public engagement.

The TSU Plaza is in the center of campus and where you will find some the university's main buildings. Sawyer Auditorium is the campus anchor of theatre and arts. The 1,800-seat facility offers concerts, plays, community and political events. MSNBC hosted "Obama's America - A Discussion on Race Relations" at Sawyer in 2010, returning in 2014 for the "Growing Hope" broadcast. Hannah Hall, TSU's administration building is to your west and to the east is the historic Robert Terry Library. The Roderick Paige School of Education is also on the plaza.
