Tyler Junior College, located in East Texas, is a two-year community college with 12,000 students enrolled, making it one of the largest community colleges in the state. Associate degrees in the Arts, Applied Sciences, and Teaching are available in almost 40 fields, such as geology, social work, bookkeeping, dance, chemistry, horticulture, communications, and many more. Students can continue their education after Tyler, and fortunately, all core requirements will transfer to state-supported universities in Texas.

George W. Pirtle Technology Center

Near Tyler's Tennis Complex and Dental Hygiene Clinic is the George W. Pirtle Technology Center, or "Pirtle Technology" as it is sometimes called. Those enrolled in health and technical programs will find most classes held here. Technical programs range from Fire Protection Technology to Child Development and Medical Office Management to Computer Science. Health programs include Sonography, Respiratory Care, and Medical Laboratory Technician among many others.

The Center for Earth and Space Science Education

An impressive planetarium is one of the highlights of The Center for Earth and Space Science Education, which is open to the public for shows and exhibits over 300 days a year. The goals of the Center are to expose visitors to astronomical developments, encourage science appreciation, and combine education with entertainment. Past exhibits have focused on shooting stars, meteorites, and dinosaur extinction.

Wagstaff Gymnasium

Wagstaff Gymnasium is home to the women's basketball and volleyball teams, as well as the men's basketball team. A recent renovation completed in January 2011 has transformed the complex, adding a large visible sign to a previously sign-less façade. The basketball court's floor, seats, and lighting are all brand new, and additions built onto the complex now make room for coaches' offices, more locker rooms, training areas, and a players' lounge.

Tyler Museum of Art

While not under the official charge of the College, the Tyler Museum of Art stands directly next to the campus and was originally built because there were no art museums within two hours of the city of Tyler. The museum's collection focuses on art from the 19th and 20th centuries, and the staff attempts to display the work of contemporary Texan artists whenever possible. Past exhibits have included the art of Edward Hopper and Norman Rockwell. In addition to gallery spaces, the Tyler Museum of Art has a classroom, library, café, and gift shop.

Wise Cultural Arts Center

The Wise Cultural Arts Center is a great resource for those who like to perform and for those who are happy just being in the audience. The music, dance, speech and theatre departments are all found here, centered around the 166-seat theatre. Programming in the past has included a jazz festival, wind ensemble, a production of the musical "Chicago," Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," and the annual Pops Concert.

Jenkins Hall

There's a good chance that you'll attend class at Jenkins Hall at some point in your time at Tyler, because it's one of the main academic buildings. Named after a former president of the college, this large and stately facility is surrounded by tree-lined paths, Gatewood Garden and ample grass. Jenkins Hall is one of the first buildings you will see if you approach the campus from East 5th Street.

White Administrative Services Building

When tackling the logistics of attending college, like financial aid, registering for classes, and applying for scholarships, the White Administrative Services Building is the place to go. While there, you can look into work-study programs to be a teaching assistant, lifeguard, or tutor, in order to help ease any financial strains and to acquire real-life work experience while still in school.

Vaughn Library

Vaughn Library has stayed on the cutting edge when it comes to how students in the 21st century utilize such a facility. The Library's large collection of newspapers is now available online, and databases can be accessed from beyond the campus. You can even "chat" with a librarian from the comfort of your residence by logging onto the library's website. In addition to over 104,000 volumes, computer labs and video carrels provide new ways of approaching academic research and studying.

Vaughn Conservatory

The Vaughn Conservatory is a sizeable greenhouse complete with classrooms for horticulture and science classes. It is open to all, regardless of major, and provides a pleasant respite from academic life without having to leave campus. When it comes to the cultivating of exotic plants, Vaughn Conservatory comes in at 5th best in Texas.

Rogers Student Center

If you want to be involved in student life outside of class, then visit the Rogers Student Center. Here is where you will find The Center for Student Life, as well as Tyler's bookstore and cafeteria. Meeting here are over 30 organizations, such as the honors society, the Student Nurses Association, a bicycle club, and Student Senate. On the second floor you will find Career Services, when you're ready to apply your academic expertise to the outside world.
