Compass Point

Our tour starts at Compass Point located in the heart of campus. This grassy area serves as a meeting point for students and is where most campus sponsored activities take place. Each semester the college hosts various fairs and expos on Compass Point. In the middle of Compass Point, built in stone, is a replica of the old military runways that once stood on this very spot. From the 1930's through the end of World War 2, this site was home to Hourglass Field and was used as a training site for Navy aviators. Hence our nickname, The JETS!

Student Services Building

The Student Services building, better known as the K-building, is the hub of campus. It is the vibrant home to many services vital to student success. Admissions, Accounting, Counseling, Financial Aid, E-O-P-S, Cal Works, Disability Services, Career Services and the Transfer Center are located inside the Student Services Building. The bookstore, C-store, Cafeteria, and student and Veterans lounges can also be found here. The College educates more than 2,000 Veteran and active duty students on an annual basis. The Transfer Center helps prepare our students to transfer to 4 year institutions, which is the ultimate goal of Miramar College.

Welcome Center

The K-2 Student Resource and Welcome Center serves as a central office for prospective students to learn the required steps for admission to San Diego Miramar College. Greeted by the Outreach team, a college ambassador will assist you with all pre-enrollment services. Ambassadors offer support related to general campus questions and knowledge regarding campus resources and student services. If appropriate, you will visit the Assessment office to be tested in both English and Math. Based on the scores received, you will then be placed in the courses best suited for your success. Also housed here is Student Health Services offering licensed care providers who support optimal learning of the campus student population; including medical care, and mental health services.

Diesel and Advanced Transportation Technology

That roar of the engine you may hear from time to time on campus is coming from the Heavy Duty Diesel & Advanced Technology buildings. Inside this 2 acre complex, the next generation of diesel and advanced transportation technicians is mastering the manipulative and critical thinking skills required for successful careers in servicing and maintaining diesel & C-N-G powered heavy duty commercial trucks, busses, heavy equipment, stationary engines and marine craft. The buildings feature: 5 ton X-Y overhead cranes, 1000 horsepower *chassis and brake *dynamometer, a dirt yard for the students to learn how to maneuverer track-type tractors, dozens of medium and heavy duty trucks, equipment and training aids, and tooling to create a simulated work environment.

Auto Tech

Auto Tech is a big part of the Career Technical Programs that have made Miramar College one of the region's top workforce producers. Students are trained in automotive maintenance and repairs. Automotive students who graduate from our manufacturer partner programs will receive factory training certification. Late model vehicles, components, service information, and computer based learning are provided for our student's education by Honda and Toyota. The college recently entered into partnerships with Audi and Chrysler to train their future workforce. The general automotive technology program recently received national accreditation.

Science Complex

A brand new 49,000 square foot science building is attached to the original science building, doubling the foot print to create an integrated science complex. This new addition features an automated roof top greenhouse and an astronomy observation deck with telescope ports. The second floor houses 9 state-of-the-art laboratories and the college offers programs in chemistry, biology, biotechnology, physics, physical science and a nationally accredited medical laboratory technician training program. When Miramar College's Medical Lab Technician program was approved by the California Department of Public Health, there were fewer than 70 licensed programs in the state. Now the College is one of seven community colleges in California that worked to address the need for 2-year graduates in M-L-T with a California license. Miramar College is also home to the Southern California Biotechnology Center.

Math & Business Building

The Math and Business building is the first to greet students as they enter campus from the north. Math and business classes are offered here. The math lab is located on the second floor and provides year round tutoring services. The math department offers many options for both transfer and pre-transfer level classes to prepare students for university study or immediate employment opportunities. There are 250 computers for students to access inside this building. The business department offers an array of courses in entrepreneurship, financial management and small business development. In addition, the business department has an American Bar Association approved paralegal program which features a mock courtroom to prepare students for assisting lawyers in a courtroom environment.

MTS Transit Center

Each semester, Miramar College educates around 14,000 students. Students are on campus at all hours Monday-Thursday, and while the college offers 22-hundred parking spots, plenty of students access campus by using San Diego's M-T-S bus system. On the north end of campus sits the M-T-S Transit Center. This transit center is a hub that connects the college with dozens of bus routes which connect the colleges with almost every neighborhood in San Diego. Buses run 24 hours and stop on the north end of campus. From there it is a 5-minute walk to almost anywhere on campus.

Fire Technology/EMT

Miramar College has been THE place for training first responders since the campus opened in 1969. A new state of the art Fire Tech & Emergency Medical Technician training facility launched in fall 2014. This is where aspiring firefighters and healthcare providers begin their training and education and continue learning upon employment. The facilities host a fire tower, fire apparatus, command training center, and a live fire simulator for advanced firefighting techniques. The college also provides the only open water lifeguard associate degree in the nation. Most aspiring firefighters and emergency medical technicians complete their education and training at Miramar College prior to entering a fire academy.

Vernal Pools

Miramar College has its own 12-acre outdoor biology lab teeming with wildlife. The Vernal Pools and Ecological Preserve project has vitalized a long standing underutilized are of campus. This section of land is home to the federally protected San Diego Fairy Shrimp, which is a soft bodied crustacean that is less than an inch long when fully grown. Vernal Pools are a rare type of seasonal wetland that exists in very few places on earth. This Preserve features a boardwalk, low lighted pathways, full perimeter fence with access gates for training classes, decomposed granite path, ecosystem education area and biological garden information signage. This project serves an outdoor interpretive lab for the biology department.

LLRC

Miramar College is a comprehensive college working hard to progress our students on to 4 year institutions. The College offers 67 associate degrees and 90 career certificates. The Library Learning Resource Center or L-L-R-C features incredible resources for our students. There are 250 computers for students to access. The L-L-R-C is home to The PLACE, which offers tutoring services during the fall and spring semesters. The Independent Learning Center features a computer lab and is home to the English Center which assists students with their writing. There is an audio-visual department and a D-S-P-S High Tech Center. And of course, the L-L-R-C features a world class library.

Arts & Humanities

The Arts and Humanities Building is always bursting with creativity. The building is home to several studios for drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpting. You will also find a world class recording studio for aspiring recording artists. Computer music classes are also offered. Speech communication is housed in the Arts and Humanities Building. Recently, the music department added a grand piano to its studio to train future artists. Fitness Center

Every college campus needs a state-of-the-art fitness center. The Miramar College fitness center is open during most school hours and there are over 100 pieces of machines and cardio equipment available for use. The fitness center is not just for students as anyone in the community can have access for as little as $23 a semester. In addition to the fitness center there is a free weight room and a large dance, yoga and indoor cycling studio on campus. The Exercise Science department offers two degrees as well as a yoga and personal trainer certificate program. All of these programs are taught by the top exercise science faculty in the region and are one of the highest rated programs in the country.

Hourglass Fieldhouse

Hourglass Fieldhouse is an indoor arena on the campus of San Diego Miramar College. It is home to the Miramar College Jets men's basketball and men's volleyball teams. Hourglass Fieldhouse is one of top community college facilities in all of California. Hourglass Fieldhouse is also home to multiple activity classes, college graduation, volleyball clinics, and basketball clinics. The men's and women's water polo team's use the on campus aquatic center and the women's soccer team play's on the adjacent fields at Hourglass Park.

Child Development

The Child Development Center serves several important purposes for our students and the campus. First, the classes offered help to certify and prepare students for transfer into early education programs or to train to become a social worker. The Center also accepts the dependents of our students and provides day care and pre-K instruction Monday through Friday. The Center provides the perfect drop off point for students looking for safe and affordable child care. The Center is open to children 2-5 years old and they need not be potty trained. The Center holds national accreditation and is licensed by the California Department of Social Services.

Aviation Building

The Aviation Department at Miramar College houses both Maintenance and Pilot Schools. Aviation degrees and certificates include Aircraft Maintenance, Business Administration, and Piloting. Here, at the only FAA certificated Aviation Maintenance Training Program in San Diego and Imperial Counties, students gain hands-on experience working on Airframes and Powerplants. An FAA-approved Pilot Ground School includes Private, Instrument, and Commercial ground training alongside Flight Simulator training. Recently, Miramar College Aviation students have completed paid internships in the San Diego region, including several at the San Diego International Airport. A current partnership with Delta Airlines has successfully placed multiple Aviation Maintenance students in paid internships with the airline.

Police Academy

Since 1969, Miramar College has been home to the San Diego Regional Public Safety Training Institute. Many of San Diego's law enforcement professionals have received training through our police and sheriff's academy. Miramar's Administration of Justice program provides a diverse array of courses for students interested in Criminal Law, Law Enforcement, Criminal Investigations, Contemporary Police Technologies, Homeland and International Security, and Corrections. Students can earn certificates, associate degrees and associate degrees for transfer. Miramar's Public Safety facility houses a driving simulator and a force option simulator that teaches law enforcement how to respond within seconds to the dangers they may encounter everyday on the streets.
