Welcome to Scripps College, located in sunny Southern California! We’re excited to have you take our virtual tour. Scripps was founded in 1926 as a private liberal arts women’s college, now part of the co-ed consortium of five undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions known as The Claremont Colleges. Scripps maintains a small residential community of 1,048 students, and about 6,000 undergraduate students attend The Claremont Colleges. Balch Hall is one of the oldest buildings on campus, housing various administrative and departmental offices, like the registrar, dean of students, and Study abroad and Global Education (SAGE), an auditorium for performances and events, as well as classrooms and faculty offices.

Seal Court

Seal Court is an outdoor space at the heart of campus. You can hang out, enjoy a meal from Malott Dining Commons, which is accessible from Seal Court, study, or grab a drink from the student-run Motley Coffeehouse. On Wednesdays, enjoy Scripps’ signature baked goods and good company during Afternoon Tea, one of many famous Scripps traditions! Seal Court is also where our mailroom, student-run Scripps store, and Career Planning and Resources (CP&R) are located. CP&R works with students from their very firsts week at Scripps to provide individual career counseling and job and internship search coaching and hosts various workshops throughout the academic year.

Edwards Humanities Building

The Edwards Humanities Building is where a majority of our academic classes take place, including many Core Curriculum courses. A Scripps education begins with the Core Curriculum, a required three-course sequence providing students with a foundation in interdisciplinary learning and a shared academic experience for all Scripps students. Average class size at Scripps is 16 students, and classes tend to be seminar style and discussion-based, enhancing engagement with your peers and professors. Scripps students have the opportunity to take classes across The Claremont Colleges. There are over 2,000 courses offered across the consortium, and logistics like academic calendars, finals week, and registration procedures are coordinated across the campuses.

W.M. Keck Science Center

The W.M. Keck Science Center is home to an intercollegiate science department shared between Scripps and Pitzer Colleges. All Keck students have access to interdisciplinary science classes, modern laboratories, a 3+2 engineering program, and pre-health advising. There are also several pre-health student clubs and organizations, such as the EMT club, pre-health club, MEDLIFE, and pre-vet and pre-dental clubs. Students also have the opportunity to pursue research opportunities directly with Keck professors. While many science research opportunities are available, research in other academic areas outside of the sciences is also available, and the majority of research is under the mentorship of our faculty.

Sallie Tiernan Field House

The Sallie Tiernan Field House is our 24,000 square-foot health, fitness, and wellness center. Tiernan houses exercise equipment, activity spaces, an outdoor swimming pool, an athletics field, and a sand volleyball court. The average temperature in Claremont is 77 degrees, so you’ll often find students relaxing on the lounge chairs by the pool. Tiernan’s approach to holistic health empowers students to think beyond physical wellness and prioritize their mental and emotional health, as well, by providing various mental health resources, educational programs, workshops, and services along with access to a wellness room containing massage chairs, calming murals, comfy beanbags, and various wellness supplies. Tiernan regularly hosts destressing activities for students.

Scripps Residence Halls

There are 11 residence halls on campus, each with their own unique character and style. Housing is guaranteed for all four years and 94% of Scripps students live on campus or in Scripps-sponsored housing. Students have access to shared spaces, including outdoor courtyards, recreation rooms, kitchen areas, computer labs, laundry facilities, and browsing rooms, which are basically small library rooms for quiet study. Residence halls are not divided up by class year, so students meet and learn from the entire student body. Our resident and community coordinators, who are current students, create programming designed to build community in the residence halls, like community dinners, off-campus excursions, and movie viewing parties.

Scripps Communities of Resources and Empowerment (SCORE)

Scripps Communities of Resources and Empowerment, known as SCORE, seeks to build a community of people dedicated to enhancing and supporting inclusion and equity at Scripps and beyond through programming and advising within a social justice framework. SCORE’s student interns lead many of the programming initiatives, which are informed by their fellow students, conversations in classes, and the socio-political scene. SCORE’s community dinners are a way for the community to come together and enjoy delicious food, great conversation, and share updates. SCORE is an accountable space centering on marginalized identities and supports student-led identity-based clubs who meet in SCORE’s space.

Rose Garden / Graffiti Wall

Every year since 1931, graduating seniors participate in this longstanding Scripps tradition on campus—the signing of Graffiti Wall. Graffiti Wall is north of the Rose Garden and is covered in signed murals from each graduating class. Each year, the seniors create a design that represents their time at Scripps and the world in which they graduated. Each senior signs their name around the design. Graffiti Wall serves as a visual reminder of Scripps’ history and the changing interests and times that affected each graduating class. It’s also a powerful representation of what collective success looks like at a women’s college.

Ella Strong Denison Library

Scripps is the only one of the Claremont Colleges that has its own library on campus. Ella Strong Denison Library is a cherished study space and home to many special collections, artworks, and items of historical significance including the Women’s Suffrage and Equal Rights Collection and the Rare Book Room. The library’s stained glass window depicts the development of the Gutenberg printing press, celebrating learning through the written word. The main doors of Denison are significant in another longstanding Scripps tradition, as they are only opened twice annually—once in the fall during the Matriculation Ceremony for all new students and again in the spring during Commencement when seniors graduate.

Garrison Theater

Garrison Theater is housed within the Performing Arts Center, which also includes a recital hall, music classrooms, faculty offices, a music library, and 24-hour practice rooms for students. Scripps shares a music department with Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Pitzer Colleges. Scripps students may also join the Claremont Concert Orchestra and Concert Choir, which both perform in Garrison Theater. In addition, Scripps hosts notable guest speakers at Garrison Theater through our signature event series, Scripps Presents. Core I lectures, which are part of the Core Curriculum experience, also take place in Garrison.
