Hi! I'm Hilary and I'll be your guide today as your tour Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology—a top-ranked college focused on science, engineering and mathematics. Our tour starts here in Root Quad, the center of academic life on our campus. This is the area where you'll find students hurrying between their classes and labs. From here, you're just steps away from all of our main academic buildings, including Moench Hall, where students can chill with friends, get care packages from home or grab a snack or coffee. Root Quad is also a great place to study on a sunny day. It's named for one of the early champions of Rose-Hulman, Chapman Root, whose local glass company designed something I'm sure you've seen – the Coke bottle!

New Academic Building - Grand Staircase

In addition to being a great place to learn, our newest academic building is a literal work of art. This beautiful new facility features an amazing interactive art installation known as Depth of Field. It is also home to state-of-the-art chemistry and biochemistry labs, flexible classrooms, collaborative work spaces and design studios. This building is also home to our new food science development and testing lab and our expanding Engineering Design major. You'll also find prototyping labs, laser-cutting devices, 3D printers, and CNC machines.

At Rose-Hulman, all of our professors are focused first-and-foremost on teaching. In flexible classrooms just like this one, they love to find innovative ways to reach their students, including flipped classrooms where students work together in groups and then later watch video lectures or other presentations, on their own time. Our newest academic building, where we are now, is designed to support active student engagement and is just one more reason Rose is known for giving its students outstanding personal attention and support.

Engineering Design is one of the newest majors at Rose-Hulman and one of the fastest growing. As you can see from this studio workspace, engineering design gives students hands-on experience and plenty of room to explore and grow. Starting in year-one, engineering design majors work with local community partners on projects that make a real difference in peoples’ lives. They also develop expertise in product design, testing and analysis while enhancing their communications skills and gaining a global perspective.

Organic Chemistry Lab

Did you know that Rose-Hulman ranked #1 for Best Science Lab facilities in the recent Princeton Review rankings? This - our fully-equipped Organic Chemistry Lab - located in Rose's New Academic Building, is one of seven new or recently renovated chemistry and biochemistry labs. Even in the first year, our students are using instruments and equipment integral to the modern practice of science. In addition to our chemistry labs, our Biology and Biomedical Engineering students have multiple research labs where students get hands-on experience with technologies important to the field.

Myers Hall - MiNDS Lab

Welcome to our MiNDS lab where we delve into the microscopic world of nanotechnology. In this state-of-the-art clean room facility, students develop the tiny components found in many electronic devices, such as smart phones, medical sensors and auto safety equipment. This space is humidity and temperature controlled and includes a scanning electron microscope, an atomic force microscope and much more. It's just one more way Rose-Hulman gives even undergraduate students opportunities they might only get as graduate students at other universities. It's part of what makes Rose-Hulman stand out in the world of STEM education.

Kremer Innovation Center

At Rose, we love getting our hands dirty tackling real-world challenges. Here in our Kremer Innovation Center, students can work on class and team projects, or just explore on their own. There are classrooms right inside this space, so professors can quickly and easily incorporate practical demonstrations into what they are teaching. In conjunction with the neighboring Branam Innovation Center, we have more than 30,000 square feet of maker space for individual and team projects, including intercollegiate STEM competition teams, such as Rose Grand Prix Engineering and Human Powered Vehicle. Many of the teams are cross-disciplinary and bring together science, engineering and math students to solve the challenge.

Swearingen High Bay Lab

A lot of people know Rose-Hulman is consistently ranked the No. 1 undergraduate engineering college in the country. One factor is the real-world, hands-on experience we offer our students in our many amazing engineering lab facilities. The *Swearingen* high-bay lab features more than twenty unit operations that give our chemical engineering students experience doing the type of work they will do after graduation. Our chemical engineering students consistently have one hundred percent job placement and average starting salaries of more than seventy-five thousand dollars.

Logan Library

Our library also features our Office of Global Engagement and our Learning Center where you can receive group or individual tutoring when you need it. On this stage in beautiful Hatfield Hall, our students show off their talents in the Rose Drama Club, the Rose Symphony Orchestra, the Jazz Band and the Rose Dance Company, to name just a few. Welcome to our Office of Career Services. Centrally located in the Mussallem Union, it is an integral part of every student's success story at Rose-Hulman. Rose is consistently rated among the best schools in the nation for career placement and internships. Each year, just six months after Commencement, close to 100 percent of our graduates have found awesome jobs, entered graduate school, or enrolled in military service. Our career services professionals work closely with our students and prospective employers to make the right match. This office hosts three exciting career fairs each year, and nearly all of our students take part in at least one paid internship and many do two or three.

That's why our Vonderschmitt Dining Room is the perfect place to grab a healthy garden-to-table meal, relax with friends, or stock up on delicious ice cream! Nothing says Rose-Hulman quite like Speed Lake. It's the picturesque heart of our campus where generations of Rose engineers have had a blast swimming, ice skating, and hanging out with their closest friends! Speed Lake also provides a natural habitat for indigenous plants and fish and always reminds us of the beauty of nature no matter how busy our days become. Speed Lake reflects all of the great traditions at Rose-Hulman, including our annual Homecoming bonfire, tennis-ball golf and late-night trips for tacos. No matter where you are on campus, the beauty of Speed Lake is never far away.

Sports and Recreation Center - Fieldhouse

At Rose, we know the importance of staying physically active. That's why our impressive Sports and Recreation Center offers something for everyone from cardio exercise and swimming to weight lifting and bouldering. We also offer dozens of very popular intramural sports in addition to 20 varsity sports. And our basketball courts, climbing wall, and indoor track are nearly always available for letting off a little steam, having fun, and staying in shape. The SRC is open days and nights during the quarter, so a healthy break is never far away.

Phil Brown Football Field and Cook Stadium

Rose-Hulman competes in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference where our student-athletes have captured numerous division championships and frequently compete in the NCAA Division III tournament. Our Fightin’ Engineers football squad plays here on Phil Brown Field, which is also used by other varsity teams and our intramural programs. Anonymous donors provided the beautiful synthetic turf on this field and our nearby soccer field. A large percentage of every first-year class at Rose is made up of athletes looking forward to continuing in their sports while getting the world’s best undergraduate engineering, science and mathematics education.

Hulman Property - Walking Trail

College life can be fast-paced and even stressful at times, which is why our beautiful campus offers plenty of quiet getaways close to nature. In 2017, Rose-Hulman acquired this beautiful property, consisting of 11-hundred acres of mostly wooded land, giving students a place to break away, enjoy running or walking the trails, or even get in a game a disc golf. Just across the street from our main campus, the Hulman property is home to wildlife of all kinds and can make you feel you've taken a little vacation in the middle of a busy day.

Downtown Terre Haute

A tour of Rose-Hulman is not complete without checking out the town we call home – Terre Haute. A city of about 60,000, Terre Haute offers a lively downtown with shops, restaurants, indoor and outdoor art. Our Swope Art Museum was named one of the ten best places to see art in smaller cities by USA Today. On this corner, known as the Crossroads of America, we're just paces away from a great locally owned coffee shop, a lively Mexican Grill where you'll find Rose students anytime (especially after midnight) and much more. With a strong nonprofit sector, our town also offers our students and professors a wide variety of ways to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Mussallem Union - Hulman Living Room

The Hulman Living Room in the Mussallem Union is a fantastic place to hang out with friends, shoot some pool or show your racing skills in a Mario Kart tournament on the big screen TV. It's also a great place to chill with a snack from the Beanies coffee shop, challenge a friend to a game of chess or just find a quiet spot to review your notes before a big test. The Hulman Living Room also features our beautiful Living Wall and a great view of Speed Lake just outside.
