Welcome to Rio Hondo College, a large and comprehensive community college perched in the hills just above Whittier, California. The institution began offering classes in 1963, and now boasts one of the area's most comprehensive and flexible paradigms of higher learning. Rio Hondo students can design a curriculum that works for them, whether it involves night and weekend classes, advanced technical training, or core coursework that can be transferred to a 4-year university. Student Services

Built into the face of a rolling hillside, The Student Services Building offers three compact floors of useful administrative and health amenities. You can come here to visit the Offices of Admission, Registration, Financial Aid, and Counseling and Health Services. The building also serves as a point of passage between the main campus entrance, and the primary quadrangle, so it is often one of the first buildings a new student or visitor may see.

Student Union

The Student Union is a brand new 15,000 square foot annex to Student Services, and home to the busy Rio Cafe and Student Lounge. The cafe menu offers a number of grill items, breakfast foods, sandwiches, personal pizzas, Mexican and Asian cuisines, and even Starbucks coffee. Students can also stop by for a quick to-go snack of fresh fruit and other organic fare, and take a break or meet a friend in the adjacent lounge.

Lower Quad

Just a few years old, the Lower Quad is a popular space to host public events and forums in the California sunshine. The new "Grand Staircase" leads a bustling funnel of pedestrians down the Puente Hillside and into this artfully landscaped plaza. The Lower Quad events calendar is packed with cultural and arts performances, and student-life events, including the popular Transfer Fair, for those interested in a smooth transition to a 4-year university.

Upper Quad

The RHC Upper Quadrangle serves as the main point of entry to campus, and is always alive with student meetings, events, performances, and general foot traffic. The circular landscape plans foster community-centric seating and gathering points at various levels, thus maximizing the stunning hillside views. The layout also offers little lookouts and nooks for those students and faculty who would like to relax or study in the fresh air.

Learning Resource Center

The Learning Resource Center, commonly referred to as the Library, offers an expansive collection to support the versatile student body. The building offers a reading room, computer labs for both PC and Apple products, and even audio-visual rentals. For those students in need of a jump-start on a project, the Library also has a dedicated research assistance area, writing center, and reading skills lab.

Administration

The Administration Building hosts a number of classrooms, offices, and guided lab spaces to support the Divisions of Language and Communication. Students can come here to seek extra help in the enclosed Writing Center, Reading Lab, Language Lab, or Learning Assistance Center, also known as the LAC. For those in search of an alternative collegiate experience, the Administration Building also offers evening, weekend and "Virtual College" courses, as well as a versatile study abroad program.

Music

The RHC Music Department prides itself on offering students a well-rounded and dynamic experience, which transcends most standard core music curricula. Not only do the members of the Music Department faculty offer students one-on-one attention, but they are all active performers and composers in the industry. The department also fosters performance and recording arts experience, by means of its solo and ensemble performance programming, and cutting-edge electronic studio.

Business and Art

The Business & Art Building embodies a meeting of two worlds, thus representing the comprehensive and versatile offerings of Rio Hondo College. The Business Program offers a number of fully- transferrable courses, slated to prepare students for the California State University System. The Arts & Cultural Programs encourage students to contribute to the art world, while being privy to the quickly- changing arts community, and applying techniques to land employment in their various creative fields.

Science and Math

Located on the north end of campus, the Science & Math Building is home to a number of Departments, including Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Physics, Engineering, and Mathematics to name a few. The academic programing can be adjusted to suit your needs, whether you need to fulfill a basic core course, or complete a transferrable unit in a more advanced area of study. RHC students also have access to free tutoring at the enclosed Math & Science Center, or MSC, which can be found on the third floor.

L Building

The L Building first came into existence to serve as the RHC Library Tower. Just a stone's throw from the central Upper Quad, this building is now a conveniently-located facility for a number of vital administrative departments. Students interested in hands-on outreach experience may frequent the L Building to visit the Office of Government & Community Relations, or GCR.
