Hello and welcome to the University of Richmond. You’re looking at a dynamic campus of over 3,200 undergraduates, located in a thriving capital city. For more than 180 years, Spiders have come to the University of Richmond with the expectation to exceed expectations. We invite curiosity and questions, integrating hands-on experience to find answers … or more questions. With students from almost every state and about 70 countries, our web spans all corners of the globe. But, no matter where they came from, every student starts and ends their Richmond journey at the Queally Center. As home to the offices of Admission, Financial Aid, the Registrar, and Career Services, it’s safe to say that the Queally Center gets a lot of foot traffic. Here, you’ll spot students doing everything from touring campus, and signing up for classes, to preparing for their internship searches, and interviewing with business leaders (many of them Spider alumni). We’re excited to show you around one of the country’s most beautiful campuses. We will explore residence halls, labs, classrooms, the dining hall, and of course, our beautiful lake in the middle of it all! The Forum is the heart of campus life and a central outdoorgathering space. This area stays busy, especially duringWelcome Week, our annual celebration to kick off theacademic year. Heilman Dining Center

Welcome to the award-winning Heilman DiningCenter, or D-hall as Spiders like to call it. From Mongolian Grill and Mediterranean Bowls, to pizza and made-to-order paninis, the options at D-hall never get old. Not to mention, we get to enjoy an awesome view of Westhampton Lake while we eat. You can also check out our eight other campus eateries, with food ranging frompub snacks to an international café.The Heilman Dining Center is also home to ETC, a convenience store selling snacks, toiletries, and even umbrellas if it starts to rain while you're in D-Hall. You can also find the post-office in Heilman - the place you'll pick up those care packages from family! Also, nearby is the historic Cannon Memorial Chapel, where many of our Spiders get married, and the Chaplaincy, a great resource for students of all faith backgrounds who want to practice their religion or explore their spirituality.

Residence Halls

Richmond’s campus is home for most of our students — about 90 percent of undergraduates live on campus. Options range from traditional double bedrooms with hall bathrooms, to suite-style residence halls, and on-campus apartments. And you’ll get to use your meal plan at our eight on-campus award-winning dining locations. Many of our students choose to apply for one of our living-learning communities. First-year students can apply for the Richmond Endeavor – an intensive cohort program that seamlessly integrates shared academic and living experiences. New students benefit from the Endeavor Program’s additional transition support, community-building, and connection to campus resources. Our Sophomore Scholars in Residence program pairs a yearlong academic course with community-based learning, travel, a group project, and a shared living space perfect for ongoing dialogue. All students may also pick from living-learning communities built around common interests, outside-the-classroom experiences, and meaningful bonds with classmates and faculty.

Gambles Mill Eco-Corridor

Here at Richmond, we love finding creative solutions for big issues – so it’s no surprise that our community has taken the collective pledge to tackle the sustainability crisis head-on. You can see this work first-hand with the Gambles Mill Eco-Corridor. Here you’ll find the newly restored Little Westham Creek, a walking trail, dozens of native plant species, a community garden, and a pollinator meadow. Our eco-corridor not only serves as a living-laboratory for students, but is also a great place to disconnect and embrace nature. But our work doesn’t stop here. In an effort to promote a more sustainable future, the University has installed a 47,000-panel solar array that’s allowed us to match 100% of our electricity with solar energy and has put us well on our way to becoming a carbon neutral campus by 2050. Speaking of big goals, we plan to achieve 75% waste diversion by 2025 through composting, campus-wide recycling education, and initiatives like our ReThink Waste program.

Gottwald Center for the Sciences

Walk the halls of the Gottwald Center for the Sciences and you’ll see biology, chemistry, and physics students hovering over microscopes and testing theories. The building includes 22 teaching laboratories and 50 student-faculty research laboratories, as well as facilities for organic chemistry, biochemistry and neuroscience; a quantitative science center; a nuclear magnetic resonance center; and a digital biological imaging center. Research is a priority here. There are no graduate students working in the labs, so many undergraduates play an active role in conducting and shaping research — even in their first year. They partner with faculty on research and co-author publications and presentations. For example, some of our neuroscience students recently had the opportunity to work in Dr. Kelly Lambert’s lab, teaching rats how to drive tiny cars; this huge accomplishment even gained national recognition! Many students co-author published research with our faculty, and receive fellowship funding to support their work. Through the Richmond Guarantee, every undergraduate is guaranteed up to $5,000 in fellowship funding for a summer internship or research project.

Modlin Center for the Arts

Looking for a vibrant arts scene? You just found it. The Modlin Center for the Arts is where to find performances from top international and domestic artists, like Philip Glass, Second City, and the Bolshoi Ballet. As a student, you’ll get free and reduced tickets to Modlin events. The Modlin Center isn’t just for world-renowned artists. It’s where to catch performers from the departments of theater and dance, and music. From student groups like the University Dancers and the University Players, to our numerous music ensembles (we have everything from a capella to jazz!) – the opportunities to showcase your artistic talents and gain on-stage experience are endless. Booker Hall – home to our Music department – is where you’ll find the Parsons Music Library and Camp Concert Hall – a performance venue that seats close to 600. In the Harnett Museum of Art, you’ll find visual art exhibitions from students and faculty, as well works from artists like Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Tyler Haynes Commons

Bridging the two sides of campus, and standing over Westhampton Lake, Tyler Hanes Commons is a hub of student life and campus activities. Behind much of the action is the Center for Student Involvement, which brings musicians and speakers to campus, and supports Richmond’s 190-plus student organizations. If community engagement is your passion, you’ll want to visit the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement. Each week, they send more than 400 students out into the Richmond metro area to work with local schools, government organizations, and nonprofits in meaningful ways. Upstairs in the Commons you’ll find our Office of Career Services. Consistently a top ranked career service office, they provide resources for students both during their time here and post-graduation, including resume and cover letter checks, mock interviews, and career workshops. Next door to Career Services, you can learn more about fellowship opportunities in the Office of Scholars and Fellowships.

Boatwright Memorial Library

While scholarly conversation and inspired collaboration happen in every corner of campus, Boatwright Memorial Library is the heart of our intellectual meeting place. With open study areas, silent study areas, classrooms, courtyards, group and individual study rooms, a technology lab and an auditorium – no matter how you prefer to learn, you’re guaranteed to find the space that’s right for you. When you need a little boost, head downstairs to 8:15 at Boatwright. This coffee shop and late-night café serves a fair-trade favorite, La Colombe coffee, along with pastries, local Bagels from Chewy’s, flatbreads, and other snacks. Boatwright also houses the Academic Skills Center where you can learn time-management techniques, or connect with a tutor for that tough calculus or Spanish course. If you need advice on a research paper or presentation, trained students and staff are also ready to help.

Student Center for Equity and Inclusion

Community, support, and belonging are hallmarks of the Richmond experience – which underlies the mission of the Student Center for Equity and Inclusion, or SCEI for short. The SCEI fosters inclusive communities and empowers students through dedicated student organizations, affinity groups, campus wide ally trainings, celebratory events, access to a Multicultural Student Space, LGBTQ+ Student Lounge, and much more! This office primarily serves as a resource for our Multicultural, First Generation, Limited Income, and LGBTQIA+ students; and all UR members are encouraged to participate in SCEI programs that center cross-cultural dialogue and learning. The SCEI is home to many programs that help amplify the voices of these underserved populations. These programs include Spiders FLI, which provides leadership opportunities, networking experiences, and more to our First-Generation College and/or limited-income students. The office also plans celebratory programs to promote cultural recognition and to celebrate the uniqueness of our cultural differences.

Well-Being Center

At Richmond, we take a holistic approach to wellness. We work to ensure that every student has easy access to well-being resources that support learning, success, and a well-balanced life. Our Well-Being Center is a comprehensive and integrated facility that serves as a one stop for all on-campus health and wellness services. If you’re looking to unwind and de-stress, you may want to take advantage of massage therapy, our Himalayan salt room, and our meditation garden. The demonstration kitchen and Organic Krush, a local chain serving healthy foods, promote good nutrition, while the attached Weinstein Center for Recreation provides students a place to get their sweat on. The Well-Being Center also houses our Counseling and Psychological Services and our Student Health Center, fully integrating all elements of mental and physical health care into one convenient and accessible facility.

Weinstein Center for Recreation

Connected to the Well-Being Center, The Weinstein Center for Recreation contains everything you’ll need to explore and enhance your physical fitness – this includes cardio and strength training equipment, free fitness classes, and a three-court gymnasium. After a good work-out, you can pop back over to the Well-Being Center for a smoothie! The Weinstein Recreation Center is also home to our Outdoor Adventure and Recreation program where you can rent equipment from mountain bikes to tents and lawn games to hammocks.

Robins Stadium and Arena

The Robins Stadium and nearby Robins Center are where our Division 1 athletes can be caught competing. As the only Spider mascot, we’re redefining what school spirit means. Come by on a Saturday afternoon in the fall and you’ll find Spider pride at a fever pitch, with tailgaters lined up and ready to cheer on the football team. Richmond may be small, but we’re mighty when it comes to athletics. We have powerhouse teams in football, basketball, lacrosse, swim/dive, tennis, golf, and more that compete in the A10 and Colonial Athletic Conference. Tickets are free for students, so you never have to miss a game.

Weinstein International Center

Give the globe in the middle of the Carole Weinstein International Center a spin and put your finger on any country — we probably have a connection there. We’re second in the nation for total students who study abroad. More than two-thirds of our undergraduates spend time abroad. About 11% of our undergraduates are international students who come from every corner of the globe. We also bring international scholars to teach courses and conduct research. And spaces like the Global Studio and Spatial Analysis Lab use technology to help students learn to navigate the world’s lingual, cultural, and physical landscapes. These interactions — whether over coffee in London or with your business professor from Shanghai — mean you’ll graduate from Richmond a true global citizen. In fact, Richmond is a top 15 producer of Fulbright Scholars and go on to teach and research around the world.

School of Law

Have your sights set on a legal career? Get started early at Richmond. Our law school – which offers a 3-year JD program – is integrated in the undergraduate curriculum, so you’ll have the chance to learn from expert legal minds. Some of our First-Year Seminars — like Framing the U.S. Constitution and Wrongful Convictions in Modern America — are taught by law professors. A handful of other courses are cross-listed for both undergraduates and JD students, meaning you’ll get a glimpse into law school life. If you look to Richmond for your legal education, you’ll also learn from extensive clinical programs — like family law, education rights, actual innocence, and intellectual property — that offer real-life experience. For those interested in the corporate world, the law school also offers a joint JD/MBA with Richmond’s Robins School of Business.

If you get excited thinking about the inner-workings of business and finance, the Robins School of Business is for you. It’s a top-ranked business school at a leading liberal arts university, meaning you dive deep into principles like accounting, marketing, economics, and international business, and still bring in the arts and sciences, preparing for careers like health care marketing or arts management. Test your business acumen in specialized spaces like the Lessing Trading Floor, equipped with Bloomberg terminals, and the Earnest and Young innovation Lab. Learn to navigate the softer side of business dealings—like client dinners, networking, and personal branding — through Q-Camp, a weekend-long career prep program. When you’re ready to launch your career, take advantage of on-campus recruiting and job shadowing programs to hit the job market with force. For those looking to continue their business education, the Robins School offers a strong part-time MBA program and one-year masters in Management.

Humanities Building

On the South end of the quad stands the Humanities Building, the oldest academic building on campus and the University’s original library. Outside, the front walkway is made from bricks that once belonged to UR’s original campus, located in downtown Richmond. Inside contains stunning study areas and soaring arched windows. Here is also where you’ll find the departments of English, History, Classics, Philosophy, and Anthropology, part of the School of Arts and Sciences. As an undergraduate, you’ll begin your academic journey as an undeclared major, and 70 percent of students ultimately declare a major in at least one the Arts and Sciences 22 departments and 10 interdisciplinary programs. Many students mix and match majors and minors and cross-department courses to forge their own path — just as the school’s open and flexible curriculum encourages. You don’t want to miss the Student Symposium, an annual showcase of more than 200 research projects from the arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences, and leadership studies. The presentations, posters, and performances are the culmination of extended undergraduate research, typically conducted side-by-side with a faculty mentor. Pro tip: Don’t miss our resident mummy, Ti-Ameny Net. She’s one of the many Egyptian artifacts on display in the Ancient World Gallery.

Jepson School of Leadership Studies

Opposite the Humanities Building you’ll find the location of another one of our undergraduate schools: the Jepson School of Leadership Studies. If you want to know how to become an effective leader, or just love discussion-led, collaborative courses, you’ll want to check out the Jepson School. It’s the first of its kind in the nation, with a mission to understand leadership as it was, as it is, and as it should be. In small classes, you’ll explore the subject through the lenses of anthropology, economics, history, literature, philosophy, politics, psychology, and religion. A six-week summer internship requirement gives you a chance to explore the challenges of leading in a real-world environment while Jepson’s ‘Justice and Civil Society’ course connects you to the greater Richmond area through volunteer opportunities and community engagement. As an added bonus – the Jepson EDGE Institute will help you take the skills you’ve learned and develop strategies for tackling job interviews, graduate school, and life after college.

Westhampton Lake

Bridging the picturesque Westhampton Lake is the gazebo, an island in our 350-acre campus. On any given day, you’ll see students crossing this bridge to get to the disc golf course on the hill; some prefer to skip the treadmill and jog along our scenic running trails; others like to take a break from studying and walk a few laps around the lake to clear their minds. On a particularly nice afternoon, you may even see students lounging in the hammocks or Adirondack chairs on the bank with a good book or playlist. When you walk past this lake on your way to class, you might picture yourself standing on the gazebo, surrounded by your classmates, reflecting on your Richmond experience at the Candlelight Ceremony the night before graduation. (That may sound far off in the future, but trust us, it’ll be here before you know it.) Speaking of life after Richmond, within one year of graduation, 24% of students are enrolled in graduate school, and of those looking for employment, 94 percent landed a job.
