Here at Norfolk International Terminals –better known as NIT –the port’s optimization and expansion have delivered the highest productivity rates, and the lowest environmental impact, of any container terminal in the Americas. Our ongoing dredging initiative will result in the deepest channels on the US East Coast, ensuring safe two-way passage for ultra-large container vessels. NIT offers a high-capacity on-dock rail operation, servicing multiple Midwest and Ohio Valley double-stack trains on a daily basis. The terminals’ truck gates are capable of processing more than 3,000 motor carrier transactions per day. Progress of this magnitude contributes to CNBC ranking Virginia as “America’s Top State for Business” for the fifth time –more than any other state.

Vessel Berths

We are standing on the container berth at NIT South. NIT offers a total of six vessel berths and 16 ship-to-shore cranes capable of servicing the largest vessels on the US East Coast.

Container Stacks

We are observing the semi-automated container stacks at NIT. Deploying semi-automated stacking cranes allows the port to housekeep, or groom, the stacks outside traditional business hours when cargo volumes are reduced. The speed of the ASC is a significant factor, moving at 5 meters per second, and allowing containers to be delivered to a truck, railyard, or a vessel more efficiently. We’ve moved the needle on increased stack density, which has resulted in our ability to handle a million more containers per year

Rail Operations

We are standing in the middle of NIT's Central Rail Yard. Multiple inbound and outbound double-stack intermodal trains are serviced on a daily basis -connecting customers in America's Heartland with international markets.

Truck Gate

We're here at the NIT North truck gate. Trucks are the life-blood of the port, moving nearly two-thirds of our total cargo -thousands of daily container transactions.
