NewSchool is a globally recognized design school with programs in architecture, product design, media design, interior architecture, construction management, and design studies. At NewSchool, we have an open door policy. Our President, Marvin J Malecha often attends final reviews and visits with students in their studios. President Malecha is an accomplished architect, designer and author and previously served as the President of the American Institute of Architects.

Our urban campus is located in the heart of the Idea District in Downtown San Diego, California. The Idea District is an exciting urban laboratory for our students, with leading design studios and architecture firms within walking distance of campus. Our students can also enjoy the area's vibrant restaurant scene with many live music venues, galleries, museums and makers spaces near campus. San Diego's trolley runs through campus making it easy to get around throughout the city. We'll take you to some of the local highlights later on in the tour.

Materials Lab

Our students can build their designs in our 3,000-square-foot Materials Lab featuring state-of-the-art equipment for woodworking, metalworking, C.N.C routing as well as 3-D printing. The Materials Lab offers students a unique opportunity to learn how to fabricate their designs and experience the production process with the help of our trained Materials Lab staff. The Materials Lab is not just a model shop – it is a place to research the feasibility of designs and develop problem solving skills while exploring new materials.

Print Center

When your designs are larger than life – why print them on 8.5x11? Students can bring their design files to our professional campus print center and have them printed in large format. All printing costs are included in the student fee except for specialty paper. Students also have access to several computer labs on campus including CAD Labs and Mac Labs.

Auditorium

Our Auditorium is used for classes and special events including the NewSchool Lecture Series which brings world-renowned guest lecturers in the field of architecture and design to campus. Recent high profile speakers have included Juhani Pallasmaa, Leon Krier, Gianandrea Barreca and Ezio Manzini. Many of our lectures are available for live stream. When our students need a break from studying, they can hang out in one of our many student lounges. Our student life office often plans fun activities in this space including an international fair and ice cream socials. Students can also sign up for our soccer team, attend board game nights and get free tickets to baseball games at Petco Park.

Career Services

The career services that we provide here at NewSchool is a bit different than most schools. We provide a comprehensive mentorship for students that starts on the first day and lasts even after graduation. Our Career Services department works with each student to develop personalized career management plans. Students can also take advantage of our monthly Career Service events including company information seminars, professional development workshops, mock-interviews and job fairs.

Main Gallery

The Main Gallery is the heart of the school. Students often use this as a pin up space to display their finished designs and get feedback from faculty and their peers. The Gallery is also used as an exhibit space. Recent exhibits have included Women in Architecture, Color Trends by P.P.G Paints and our quarterly student show case. It is also the location of our annual grad show which is a networking event where we invite industry and recruiters to view our graduating class' thesis work.

At NewSchool, our classes are designed with your future career in mind. Our accomplished faculty are working professionals in the field of architecture and design allowing them to provide real-world case studies to our students rather than just theory. We also partner with leading architecture and design firms to provide opportunities to our students. We regularly invite industry professionals to attend our final reviews, organize studio tours with local firms, and provide opportunities to work on client projects.

Need some inspiration? Our library holds 15,000 volumes of design books and all the latest issues of industry magazines so you can have plenty to keep you inspired. If you can't find what you are looking for here the San Diego Public Library which is ranked in the top 50 largest libraries in the US is located just a few blocks away.

Studio Two

Welcome to one of our campus studios. From the moment you step into the studio you'll feel the buzz of energy and creativity. It's a place where students can work on their designs, hear feedback from their professors, and get inspired by their classmates. Whether they are night owls or early risers, students have 24/7 access to their studio space so they can work on their design whenever the inspiration strikes. Students have weekly studio hours with faculty where they can receive one-on-one feedback on their work. Studio Two is also home to our academic services, disabilities services, veteran's resource center and student life office.

Through-out campus we have spaces for students to meet and work on projects. One of these spaces includes our construction management lounge that overlooks Studio Two. Our construction management students recently used this room to prepare for the annual Associated Schools of Construction Competition where they won first place.

Studio Six is one of our largest studio spaces and is usually reserved for our upper classman architecture students. It features several classrooms as well as our campus Lens Lab where students can check out professional photography equipment to document their work.

Studio Five is dedicated to our design programs which were created in collaboration with the globally recognized Domus Academy in Milan, Italy. Our design programs bring together the Italian design philosophy with California innovation and gives students the opportunity to study abroad in Milan. We also incorporate real client projects into many of our classes; working with local businesses to design new products, interiors and graphics. Our focus on project based learning helps prepare our students to stand out in the industry. In fact, student work from one of our Media Design classes recently won a national ADDY from the American Advertising Awards.

San Diego is an exciting city to call home. NewSchool has several housing options for students to choose from to fit with their life style. One of our most popular options includes The Lofts at 707 Tenth. Located just one block from campus, The Lofts at 707 Tenth features hip, urban apartments with a residential advisor on-site.

With a campus located downtown, our students can enjoy an urban lifestyle, catch a baseball game at San Diego's Petco Park, and take inspiration from the beautiful skyline. That's it for the tour. Balboa Park is the second largest urban cultural park in the united states and is located just ten minutes from campus. The beautiful historic buildings are home to fifteen museums as well as the world famous San Diego Zoo. The park also features seventeen gardens and multiple hiking and biking paths making it the perfect place to relax when you need a break from the city. And best of all, many of the museums are free on Tuesdays.

The great part about the NewSchool campus is how close it is to the best that San Diego can offer. Within a ten minute walk from campus is the San Diego Harbor. The beautiful harbor has great views of local sailing boats and the city sky line as well as being the home for trendy restaurants and nightlife. Just a short drive up the coast and you can go surfing or enjoy a day at the beach.
