The Heart of Campus

Father John DuBois, the founder of Mount Saint Mary's, came to America to escape the French Revolution. Father DuBois soon opened a small school on a mountain near Emmitsburg and taught local children. In 1808, the transfer of students from a closed preparatory seminary to Emmitsburg marked the formal beginning of Mount St. Mary's. The Terrace residence hall complex located in the heart of campus was the original school. Today, students hang out with friends and study in this area. Nearby Emmit's Street Eats food truck serves lunch and dinner, and Founders Plaza is a gathering spot for everything from the senior pinning ceremony to band concerts.

Chapel of the Immaculate Conception

Built for the university's centennial in 1908, the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is open to students of all faiths as a peaceful retreat on campus. Offering Catholic Mass multiple times on Sunday, as well as every day during the week, students can be found in the IC Chapel praying, going to Adoration, or participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The beautiful Chapel holds a recently restored custom digital organ and hand painted and carved Stations of the Cross. The campus also offers non-denominational services on Sundays.

Residence Life: First-Year Students

Students are guaranteed housing all four years that includes free laundry, Wi-Fi and parking. For first year students, your primary residence will be Sheridan or Pangborn Halls. Lounges and chapels are located throughout the residence halls.

Residence Life: Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

Terrace is the home of Bradley, Dubois, Brute, and McCaffrey residence halls. The Terrace Complex was the original school, with DuBois Hall dating to 1826. This complex typically houses first-year students and sophomores. Each of our residence halls features laundry services, and each floor is managed by a resident assistant. In addition, The Annex and Powell Hall feature suite style living, and our newest residence area on campus, the Cottages, offers townhome style living. The Towers apartment buildings—Rooney, Keelty and Horning—have all been recently renovated. The two- to five-person apartments include a full kitchen, living room and a private bathroom.

Student Life at the Mount

The Palmieri Activities Center, or PAC, is the location for all things fun. There are foosball tables, Ping-Pong tables, televisions to watch sports and movies, a slick sound system and a multitude of events. Bingo nights, dances, the Crab Feast, food trucks, dueling pianos, game watch parties, outdoor exercise classes, and so much more are just some of the events held here. Students flock to the PAC to hang out and have fun! We offer over 80 clubs and organizations on campus for students to get involved in, including those through the Center for Student Diversity, Center for Service, Center for Student Involvement and Belonging and Center for Campus Ministry.

Our dining hall is in Patriot Hall, where our food stations have something for everyone. Our various meal plan options meet every need. The meal plan counts for Patriot Hall, The Mount Café, and Emmit's Street Eats food truck. Each student is allocated a certain amount of meal plan swipes and flex dollars—depending on the meal plan selected—to spend in the various meal stops or at Starbucks located in the Mount Café. An app allows students to order Emmit's Street Eats, Saxbys Cafe or Mount Café selections in advance, so they can grab and go. There is always something different for students to try and enjoy!

Knott Academic Center

The Knott Academic Center, or AC, is a three-story building that devotes the top floor to the Richard J. Bolte School of Business including the Palmieri Center for Entrepreneurship, Bloomberg Finance Lab and Robert W. Bream Academic Commons. The other two floors feature numerous classrooms, the Honors Program Suite, the John F. Donovan, Ph.D. Seminar Room and our Writing and Information Technology Support centers! The recently expanded and renovated building features a student-run Saxbys Café, managed by a student chief executive officer, where students and faculty can chat as they enjoy grilled cheese sandwiches, breakfast burritos and a cold brew.

Phillips Library

Phillips Library is one of the best places to study on campus. The top floor is split between a quiet zone and talking areas. The bottom floor is filled with cubicles for complete silence, and the main floor is where all students are free to talk. A few classrooms also are located in the library as well as a study niche that is accessible to all students 24/7. You can print or scan up to 400 sheets of paper for free on our library's printers. The library is also home to the Express Studio, which allows those without previous video-production experience to produce high-quality videos.

Coad Science Building

Home to our School of Natural Science and Mathematics, Coad is always bustling with students working side by side with their professors in laboratories, pursuing independent research projects, and engaging in discussions with their peers, faculty, and staff. The three story building is home to floors designated to chemistry and biology, neuroscience and psychology, and computer science, cyber security and data science. Every science major conducts and completes their own research project and has access to summertime and school-year research opportunities. All students on campus love to walk by Coad during the autumn months to snap pics as the beautiful trees in front of the stately building change color.

Visual and Performing Arts

The student-run Makers House offers students the opportunity to make, teach and create within a community. Located inside the Art Annex, the Makers House hosts weekly workshops and daily ceramics, craft, shop and fabrication labs. Across campus is also the Delaplaine – home to all things Fine Arts. Delaplaine has a black box theater where students are able to get involved both on stage and behind the scenes. Students are heard rehearsing for Chorale or practicing for Orchestra or Wind Ensemble. There is even an art gallery for students to display their work.

Student Support Services

The Career Center, located in Upper McGowan, supports students in creating their resume and cover letters, practicing for interviews, obtaining internships, and ultimately employment or further education. More than 95 percent of Mount graduates are employed or attending graduate school within six months of graduation. Learning Services, located in Archbishop Borders Hall, offers tutoring, extra class notes, and additional time on tests for those who have a learning disability. The Center for Student Engagement and Success is a one-stop resource for students. From preparing for exams to discussing career goals, student success coaches are dedicated to ensuring that you take the necessary steps to support your academic success.

Esports Arena

The multi-faceted esports program has competitive teams playing League of Legends, NBA2K, Overwatch 2, Rocket League and Super Smash Bros. These teams are supported by the university in the same way as traditional student-athletes, with scheduled practices, priority course registration, an exercise regimen and academic support services. The program also supports club teams for players who want to compete but who play less popular games or who don't want to play at the highest levels. With over 2,200 square feet of floor space, Purcell Hall has space for any students to relax and play video games as well as dedicated space for the esports program.

ESPN Broadcasting Studio

Our student-run, high-end television broadcasting studio, located in Lower McGowan, produces Mount sporting events live through ESPN+. An ESPN broadcasting practicum course coaches students on how to produce broadcasts, operate cameras and edit audio and video for replays. The broadcasts cover basketball, soccer, baseball, softball and lacrosse games.

Athletic Fields

Outside Lower McGowan is Memorial Gym and Echo Field. You'll often find our Men's and Women's Rugby teams practicing here, along with some of our NCAA Division 1 teams and the Army ROTC program. On the other side of campus, is the PNC Sports Complex athletic fields. Student athletes from Softball, Baseball, and Track and Field all compete on this side of campus. The multipurpose field beyond the softball diamond is where our Men's and Women's soccer and lacrosse teams compete ferociously. Nearby our tennis teams hold court as they serve aces.

Knott Athletic Recreation and Convocation Complex

The ARCC is the home of Knott Arena, where our men's and women's basketball teams compete ferociously. Students can take a swim in our aquatic center or compete in club and intramural sports. Looking to shoot hoops with your friends? Take advantage of the four recreational courts than can be set up for basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and indoor tennis. Mount St. Mary's Seminary

The Mount St. Mary's Seminary is the second oldest seminary in the United States, and the largest in the country. Over 150 seminarians live and attend classes here. They are active members of the community, and frequently serve as Chaplains for our sports teams. They are also extremely competitive athletes in intramurals! Our seminarians serve as diocesan or ordered priests upon graduation. A monument near the seminary pays tribute to the 55 men who have been educated at Mount St. Mary's Seminary and then gone on to become bishops in service to the Church.

National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes

At the very top of campus stands a tall, gold statue of the Blessed Mother, Mary. She watches over every Mountie past, present, and future from her perch in our National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Grotto is a Catholic place of prayer that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. It is a place of pilgrimage, worship, reconciliation, and tranquility. One of the most serene places on campus, students often venture to the Grotto to reflect, do homework, and to attend daily mass.

Frederick Health Emmitsburg

In partnership with the Frederick Regional Health System, Health Services offers convenient services daily for students and employees at Frederick Health Urgent Care Emmitsburg. Experienced and multidisciplinary healthcare practitioners provide evaluation and treatment for illnesses and injuries, preventive health check-ups, immunizations and periodic health monitoring.
