Montana Hall

This is Montana Hall, the 2nd oldest building at MSU, and the most iconic. The offices of the President, Registrar, Student Accounts, and the Graduate School are all located in Montana Hall. At the top of the building, you'll notice a cupola, which gives Montana Hall its distinctive shape. In the early days of the University, a group of students walked a cow up into the cupola as a prank. You may have heard that cows can physically walk upstairs, but not down them. To their dismay, the students discovered that this was true. The cow got stuck in the cupola. A crane was required to lift the cow out, and the cupola crumbled in the process. The University did not rebuild this structure until its centennial anniversary in 1993, when an alumnus made a donation that restored Montana Hall to what you see today.

Asbjornson Hall

Welcome to Asbjornson Hall, MSU's newest academic building! This facility was made possible through generous donations from alumni and friends of Montana State. It's home to labs and offices for the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering, as well as MSU's Honors College. Asbjornson Hall was designed with collaboration in mind; from architects to biologists to engineers, you'll find projects of all sorts here.

Barnard Hall

Barnard Hall is home to many of MSU's outstanding lab facilities, including the Microfabrication Lab. In this state-of-the-art cleanroom facility, students have access to professional-grade equipment that they can utilize in academic and research projects. At MSU, students get access to hands-on learning spaces starting in their first year, allowing for a much more dynamic learning environment.

Centennial Mall/American Indian Hall

Opened in Fall 2021, American Indian Hall is both a work of art and educational resource; furthering MSU's Land Grant Mission to provide resources, services, and educational opportunities to all students, regardless of background. In addition to its dedicated spaces for study, collaboration, ceremony, and academic classrooms, the hall is also home to MSU's Department of Native American Studies and the American Indian/Alaska Native Student Success Services office.

Strand Union Building

The Strand Union Building serves as a campus hub for our students. In fact, it's one of the busiest buildings in the state! You'll find lots of great student services, including our Allen Yarnell Center for Student Success, student bookstore, and Financial Education offices. Renne Library

The Renne Library is more than just a collection of books; it's one of our most popular study spots on campus. Swing by the Brewed Awakening coffee shop on the first floor before meeting your classmates for a group project session, or head to the third and fourth floor quiet study zones to really focus. You can also connect with MSU's Information & Technology center for technical support and questions, or a research librarian for help on a tricky assignment.

Reid Hall

At MSU, you'll find that your classroom experience tends to be smaller than you might imagine. Our average class size is 30 students, and with a student-to-faculty ratio of 19:1 you'll find that connecting with your professors is easy and convenient. Many of our academic spaces, like this one in Reid Hall, have been built or renovated recently, ensuring that the spaces you're learning in are inviting and welcoming.

Romney Hall Oval

Once MSU's primary athletic facility, Romney Hall now serves as an academic hub for MSU students of all majors. (Re)opening its doors in Spring 2022 after a $25 million renovation Romney Hall provides more than 1,000 classroom seats each our of the day, leading to the availability of nearly one million classrooms seats throughout the year. Additionally, Romney Hall now provides expanded spaces for the Math and Writing Help Centers, Veteran and Disability Services. As MSU continues looking to the future, this will be a spaced used by nearly every student on campus for generations to come.

Gaines Hall

Many classes at MSU don't involve big lectures – in fact, most don't. Spaces like our Technology Enhanced Active Learning classrooms – or TEAL for short – like this one in Gaines Hall, allow for more collaborative learning environments for all types of subjects. In addition to connecting with faculty members, students can also connect with professional academic advisors who help them navigate a path toward their degree. Our Academic Advising Commons, also located in Gaines Hall, is open to all students throughout their time at MSU.

Hosaeus Fitness Center

At MSU, we know your experience about more than just what happens in the classroom. For students who like to stay active, our Hosaeus Fitness Center offers dozens of options. From standard fitness equipment to a climbing wall, practice gyms, group fitness classes, and more, you'll find it all here. Access is already included in your student fees, so there's no need to pay for a membership! Our students also recently approved a $60 million renovation and expansion project, which will transform the Fitness Center into a Wellness Center, focusing on both physical and mental wellbeing.

As one of Montana's flagship universities, we take our sports seriously! MSU offers 13 NCAA Division 1 teams for students to compete on, as well as a NIRA rodeo team. Additionally, we offer several club sports teams, as well as intramurals. Students can attend athletic events free of charge, and our sporting events are as big as they come in Montana, so you're bound to see community members from Bozeman and across the state cheering the Bobcats on with you. Go Cats!

Montana State University boasts among the finest athletic facilities in the Northwest, and the crown jewel is without doubt Bobcat Stadium. The stadium received a facelift in 2008 with the installation of artificial field turf, a gift from the 1984 Bobcat Football national championship team. The most recent addition to Bobcat Stadium was a new endzone seating section, named after Montana State University great Sonny Holland for his dedication to Bobcat Football as both a player and a coach. This addition is located on the south end of the stadium and offers 5,200 more seats, increasing the total capacity to over 17,000.

The campus community is also a big part of the MSU experience. Our 12 residence halls offer something different for each type of student, no matter what your preferences may be. Half of our new freshmen students each year come from out-of-state, so you'll find something going on every weekend – no commuter campus vibes here. We also enroll more Montanans than any other university in the state, so you'll find a diverse and inclusive student body in the residence hall communities and beyond.

At MSU, research isn't reserved just for the STEM fields. Our students also have the opportunity to participate in creative projects each year and have access to industry-standard equipment. Small class sizes and lots of studio time and field work means that our students are well-prepared for life after school. From music video and major motion picture shoots in Hollywood, to independent documentary projects, our students have an impact well beyond Bozeman.

Duck Pond

No campus is complete without an iconic outdoor space, and the MSU duckpond is a student favorite going back for generations! During warm weather, this is a favorite study and lunch spot for our students. During the winter, our ducks stay nice and cozy thanks to the artificially heated water. And, during the summer months you can even catch a live performance by Montana's Shakespeare in the Parks company, part of our very own College of Arts & Architecture.

Cheever Hall

Hands-on learning is at the core of what we do here at MSU. We've been recognized as a top-tier research university by the Carnegie Foundation. And, critically, the majority of students at MSU are undergraduates, meaning you'll get into research and creative spaces your first year, like this introductory design course for Architecture. Students in the Architecture program get their own workspaces for projects here in Cheever Hall, so you'll always have somewhere to go to when a creative moment strikes.

Even though MSU is Montana's largest university, you'll find that our campus is quite easy to get around. Our pedestrian-friendly spaces include the Centennial Mall, which cuts right through the heart of campus. During the start of school each year, we'll host Catapalooza, a two day festival and information fair for new students. Interested in joining one of our 300+ club and activity groups? We know that a big part of what makes MSU so special is our location. No other school in the country can offer "campus to chairlift in 20 minutes" service. Surrounded by mountains and wilderness spaces, and with Yellowstone National Park right in the backyard, you'll find something for everyone in our community. And the town of Bozeman is one of the largest in the state, so you'll be able to do everything from catching a headlining concert or guest speaker, to attending a film or music festival downtown.

Plant Growth Center

Research at MSU extends well beyond the walls of our classrooms and academic buildings. Across Montana, you'll find a dozen different research and experimentation stations that our professors and students utilize. Here in the Plant Growth Center, for example, students have access to 29 individually controlled greenhouse spaces for research projects. Beyond Montana, our students have a global impact, from researching disease and drought-resistant crops, to developing clean water infrastructure in Kenya.

Hyalite Hall

Our story at MSU never stops. Over the past ten years, we've opened or renovated several of our campus buildings, including this one! Hyalite Hall is MSU's newest residence hall and is home to over 500 freshman students. Floor communities are designed to be tightly connected, and students enjoy common spaces that offer fireplaces, an outdoor patio and kitchen, and several outdoor recreation spaces. All students living on campus are matched with roommates based on several compatibility surveys to ensure that their living experience is tailored to their needs and preferences.

No campus living experience is complete without somewhere good to eat, and MSU offers two award-winning dining commons! Rendezvous Dining Pavilion opened in 2018 after an $18 million construction project. From the grille, to the pizza oven, to the wok bar, you can find a little bit of everything here. And, it's healthy! A large percentage of our dining hall food is sourced locally from across Montana, and our Culinary Services team can tailor meal plans to every diet preference or need.

Jabs Hall

Our academic spaces are designed with collaboration in mind. Buildings like Jabs Hall, home to the College of Business & Entrepreneurship, include lots of study spaces and group work rooms for students. You'll also find student help and tutoring centers in Jabs as well as other academic buildings on campus. Programs like SmartyCats tutoring offer low-cost peer tutoring options for students who need assistance, and faculty are always more than happy to have you swing by for office hours. From your first day on campus through graduation, you'll find yourself surrounded by a supportive and caring community.
