Welcome to Mitchell College. My name is Sade and I'll be your guide today as we begin our tour at the central campus gates.

Before we get started, let me explain the many ways in which you can explore our beautiful campus:

Bordered on one side by sandy beaches of the Thames River, the campus is just minutes from downtown New London, Connecticut, a small but sophisticated city that got its start as a whaling port. Known for its active and eclectic music scene, New London is a center of arts and entertainment, located between New York and Boston. Opportunities for shopping, dining, and fun abound.

The light house, a symbol of guidance and hope, featured in many Mitchell publications, is less than a mile down the road.

Most visits to campus begin at Henry Hall, the location of the Admissions and Financial Aid offices.

There are several open houses throughout the year, included some with a focus on military and transfer students. Also, admissions counselors are available most days to give you the personal attention you need.

If you want to experience Mitchell, set up a time to "shadow" one of our student ambassadors. Or if you just hate to wait, we have "On the Spot Admissions Days," when you can bring your materials and get your answer on the same day. Any way you look at it, we think you'll like Mitchell even better when you can see us up close.

Named after the New London Revolutionary War patriot, Nathan Hale Hall is the main academic building on campus. Classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays or Tuesdays and Fridays, leaving Wednesdays for labs, seminars, advising, and internships. With an enrollment of around 800 students, the average class has only 15 students. There is no such thing as a lecture hall here!

Our First-Year College program helps ensure your smooth transition to college life. Freshman learning communities work together on projects centered on a common theme, (such as sports, global studies or forensic investigation).

Each Mitchell academic program offers practical experience through dozens of proven internships that faculty members help you coordinate. Business majors for instance, might intern at Disney World; Environmental Studies majors at nearby Mystic Aquarium and the Institute for Exploration.

Duques Center, our newest academic facility, is where a lot of the personal attention that Mitchell College is known for takes place. By working with the Career Center, students follow a four-year plan to explore career options, develop leadership skills, and prepare for entrance into the workplace. If there is a need for academic support, students have access to free professional tutoring or one-on-one advising. Comprehensive academic support is also available for additional fees.

At Mitchell our dining plan offers 19 meals per week. Monday through Friday students are able to get breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Saturdays and Sundays brunch and dinner are served. In addition to these meals, students receive "flex credits" which they can use for snacks or food from the campus center.

The Cafeteria has a grill, hot entrée service, a stir-fry bar, pizza bar, salad bar and two soups stations. Sandellas, an easy alternative to the Cafeteria, offers freshly made wraps, salads, paninis, quesadillas and rice bowls, as well as a lounge and TV.

There are a several housing arrangements at Mitchell College. Space is available all four years. Freshmen usually have a standard double room in Simpson residence hall, with a bathroom down the hall. Simpson, Sanders, and Matteson are the dorms on campus.

Upper class students can choose from more living options and enjoy more space. Suites in Mariner Hall, our newest residential hall, include 3 double dorm rooms and 2 semi-private bathrooms linked by kitchen facilities. This housing option is available to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Later in the tour, you'll see yet another housing option for upper class students, located on the waterfront.

The fitness center in Yarnall Center is available to all students. As a NCAA Division III college, we host soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, cross-country and sailing. There are also men's baseball and lacrosse as well as women's volleyball and softball teams. For those interested, we have rugby and cheerleading clubs.

As the NCAA says, the vast majority of student athletes "go pro" in something other than their sport of choice. Mitchell College allows athletes to compete at a high level without sacrificing their studies. The advantages of fitness, discipline and time-management help prepare students and athletes to excel after college.

The Campus Center is a great place to hang out with fellow students. There are late night food options and all kinds of activities to help students relax and unwind. Some of the more popular regular events include Karaoke and Open Mike nights.

Student Government and a number of clubs and organizations on campus are coordinated through this center.

Off campus, downtown New London has a wide range of music, arts, shopping, and dining. Students often take week-end trips to New York or Boston for cultural and sports events, minutes away by Amtrak. Parking is available for freshmen on campus as well.

Michael's Dairy is where students get a taste of what it's like to run a business. This college-owned ice cream shop is staffed and managed largely by students, who apply what they've learned in their Hospitality and Tourism classes to a retail operation.

Radio Mitchell, a public internet radio station, was established by students with support from faculty, staff and alumni. Under the guidance of the Communications Department Chair, students led in the vision, funding, planning and implementation phases of the project. Whether it's running a small business or building a radio station from scratch, Mitchell students learn valuable lessons that prepare them for post-graduation career or academic pursuits.

Moorings is one of three waterfront residences on campus. A sea captain purchased the lot in 1860 and built the original house. The stunning wrap-around porch, supported by brownstone, is both picturesque and inviting.

The Moorings was part of a group of homes along Pequot Avenue that served as a summer resort community for wealthy locals. Now, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors can apply through to live in the Moorings or in its neighbors on either side, Fair Haven and Harbor House.

Aside from its location between New York and Boston, with train, ferry and bus service minutes away, Mitchell students enjoy a beautiful waterfront. The waterfront is used as a venue for academics, sports, and recreation. The Mitchell College competitive sailing team launches from the campus docks.

Our sandy beach, ideal for sunning and swimming is a short distance from the docks. Environmental Science majors also make use of the beach. Extensive efforts by students to preserve the dunes on the waterfront, is just one of many projects that has provided practical experience in marine biology and environmental sciences.
